In the past 3 weeks, I've watched 135 episodes of Bleach, subbed, on Hulu. Wanting to watch the 136th, I found it on youtube, dubbed.

AND OH MY GOD DOES THE VOICE ACTING SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aaaack! They all sound like perverted versions of Ash Ketchum's pre-pubescent childhood! What were they thinking!? And LEVELS?! Where the hell did that come from? Oh my god..subs subs subs subs subs where are you *cries*

I think what most people don't realize is that most of the subbed voices are just as terrible as the dubbed voices, it's just that so often they try to "americanize" or whatever the dubbed voices and it ends up to the point where it just more noticeable to us because we understand how the accents work and what not in the language because we understand it better.  Like, the original voice acting is just as terrible most of the time (just a whiny, loud and obnoxious) but its okay because you're all like "HEH JAPANESE "

Haha, well that might be true. It certainly isn't the case that the Japanese speak at all like THAT. It's probably as obnoxious as the English equivalent of running around and yelling in all caps irl. Japanese is a very low-key and comparatively monotone language in comparison to the voice acting we hear.

Still though. Kisuke's not supposed to sound like he's from California. I half expected him to pull a "Duuude."

Subs win. They don't have to conform to the animation, so the translation is allowed to be more in-line to context, and the sound layers aren't screwed up.

EDIT: But omigod the NAME PRONUNCIATION TOO

Yumichika (YOO MEECH KA) -- butchered as YOO MEE CHEE KA. Ohhoh my god.

Sorry. I don't watch very much anime so I'm not used to the culture shock.

Like I am not the sort of person who is going to readily knock down any dub without hearing it first, but I really do not understand what the whole point of it in the first place is anyways.  Like, aside from maybe a kid's show where the audience can't really read, or read very quickly, there is little reason to do dubbing.  Reading subtitles is not particularly hard or distracting, and it then at least keeps the show to the original intended vision. Like, I think my biggest problem with dubs is that it takes away from what the original show tried to capture, just because so often the dubbing and the original mood of the show are very rarely on the same page at all, if even close.  I don't think we live in such a world where we can't just let that go into shit just because there are some people who are dumb enough to not be able to enjoy something if they have to read even the slightest bit.  Hell, I even put on subtitles for english language movies when available (and the same with video games as well) just because I find it a lot easier to follow anyways.  You miss out a lot when the voice acting changes hands, so why not just enjoy it in the way that it was originally intended.

well I agree with that but isn't something lost in translation anyway? It seems some of the really jarring dialogue and exposition in anime might not be so out of place in its original language. I don't know that for sure though since I don't speak any Japanese

i mean isnt that true of just about any sort of media that is written in a language other than your own?  The inherent problem with translations is that so much is lot when they are performed so it is only really what is to be expected at the end of the process anyways.

Alls I got to say about subs v dubs is that rewatching Sailor Moon in English has been a million times more fun than rewatching it in Japanese.
