The only reason to like tim burton is if you're an annoying goth/scene/emo kid
Or if you like variety. And don't give a fuck if something is labeled one thing or the other.

I mean Tim Burton's not bad... He's not my favorite director. But he's a competent to good movie maker. Sweeney Todd is really good. Seriously, give it a watch. I typically don't care for musicals but still really liked this movie.

Also, I thought the first Pirates of the Caribbean was good. It's sequels were kind of mediocre at the best of times though.

because tim burton is known for his variety in casting and visual style. there's some labels you probably should watch out for if you're gonna watch a movie, 'bad' is one of them (obviously you don't give a fuck)

beetlejuice was allright, but everything since then has sucked. His visual style isn't exactly that interesting either because it's very kinda traditional. It's the kinda normal view of fairy tales. And after like seeing so many films where everything looks the same, you kinda realise that it's all he can do these days. Like Frank Miller, the comic writter  who for the past like twenty years has only ever been able to write variations of sin city, whether it features Batman or trojan warriors, it all boils down to being the same thing when under his pen.

charlie and the chocolate factory for example sucked. it didn't work, because he tried to make it into alice in wonkaland. All the magical whimsy that makes the book work, just become generic burtonisms without the fun.
i kinda rate him with tarrentino in the 'overrated prat who makes boring films' catagory. still not as bad as the cgi whores like bay or mcg. but really... jack nicholson as a MOBSTER JOKER. Ugh.

and nah I can't deal with the pirates films. nonstop cavalcade of cgi stunts and cliches with the added joy of a near keanu quality of wooden acting (i think rather than walking the plank, they should have had to walk orlando bloom).
EDIT: I know pirates is a family film, but seriously children can like decent films too.

I meant variety as in I like a variety of film makers. Alec said earlier that only scenesters or what ever like Tim Burton.

Labels, They can be useful. But I'm not going ignore a movie because its called 'goth' or 'emo'. That isn't to say that I LIKE all the movies that are called such, but I'm not going to just dismiss without watching.

Saying Tim Burton's stuff is for Goths, Emos, and scenesters is like saying westerns are for cowboy wannabe's or something.

you guys are lame. yeah tim burton is not amazing and plenty of his films have been bad (wtf, alice in wonderland). obviously, the demographic that a film appeals to can be a good indicator of whether you'd like it or not (example: Twilight appeals to 12-year-old girls, not me). but that's not a foolproof rule-- stupid people can appreciate something good without understanding the deeper meanings and whatnot... someone can like Huckleberry Finn just because it uses the word "nigger" and not because it's a classic tale about race relations and the struggle for freedom in antebellum America.
there's been some good Burton movies and it's dumb to dismiss everything he makes as being unwatchable or something. Sweeney Todd is seriously awesome. man, the story is pretty great. i've seen it live, in person :D
maybe it's a good Tim Burton film because of the fact that it wasn't even written by him, being that it comes word-for-word from the original Stephen Sondheim musical. and the casting is no different than other Tim Burton films, but the actors fit best in this one. so saying that you don't like Sweeney Todd because it's a Tim Burton movie is dumb; the original script, music, and even atmosphere all come from the original production, which has always been highly-rated.
and yes i have seen Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and it's great.
semper games.

no it's not. Writing off an entire genre is not the same thing as writing off a filmmaker.

I don't want to be grouchy curmudgeon thecatamites muttering vaguely about decline of civilisation etc repent ye sinners but there's something about that whole ornate whimsy style that people like Tim Burton and Sufjan Stevens and probably Wes Anderson and the guys who did Amelie or that Grinch movie as well do that kind of grates on me. Not just in terms of superficial quirkiness or whatever but just things like the lighting and the uh precision of it all that seems almost hateful to me in a way. I think part of this is that it almost exorcises the sense of dislocation or incoherence or (whisper it) uncanniness of things like Alice In Wonderland or old children's shows or fairytales or whatever in favor of an incredibly literal and uh generally boring take on strangeness. Basically picture some awful standup talking about Heh.. Santa.. An Old Man Who Sneaks Into Kid's Rooms You Know Theres Something Going On There and you'll get what I mean maybe. It's not enough for Willy Wonka to be a kind of strange and inscrutable / occasionally scary eccentric dude he has to be amped up to the exxxtreme and turned into mincing paedophile michael jackson with very carefully depicted craziness. It's probably the same thing I object to in the lighting, where everything is dragged out of the shadows and smeared with meaningless overstylisation and you're forced to look at it while Tim Burton screams LOOK AT IT LOOK AT HOW CREATIVE AND WEIRD IT IS LOOK AT IT YOU FUCKER. ADMIRE MY FUCKING SETS. DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH MONEY I SPENT ON THIS FUCKING ELABORATE SET DESIGN. THIS IS HIGH QUALITY DETAILED SHIT. EVERY BLADE OF GRASS WAS INDIVIDUALLY PAINTED A BRIGHTER SHADE OF GREEN TO EMPHASISE STRANGENESS NOW TELL ME THAT ISNT THE UNCANNIEST FUCKING SHIT. NOW HERES A MUSICAL NUMBER JUST TO DRIVE HOME TO YOU CUNTS JUST HOW WILD AND WACKY I FUCKING AM. idk i make cardboard games so i probably cant talk

also i thought maybe maybe peewees playhouse is to blame but looking at vids it seems like that show had a kind of deliberate trashiness going on which seemed a lot more fun than just lacquering everything. phew!!

japan needs some random briton to be critical of them like that video

also tim burton is just like the akira toriyama of white people except replace creepy pedophileness for homoeroticness

but yeah I assert that tim burton exists like sustains itself like we were talking about the whole uncanny soap opera atmosphere and how it's almost like it exists to be this random specific dreamworld to come back to every afternoon/year or two (because of my usual explanation because all americans are big babies)

and I'm trying to figure out if tim burton has gotten worse or if it was just better when his movies were SINGULAR it feels like he's really churning out shit lately compared to like 90's I always thought of him as tim burton that guy with the 2-3 movies now he has like 27 movies that are his usual shit and star johnny depp helena bonham carter like if david lynch did a new movie every year probably everyone on gw would hate his guts

I eat probably less quantity. but also less healthily.

On the topic of Burton: Well, I guess I should have said the "style of Burton" because there are other similar styled movies that aren't done by Burton. The "A Series of unfortunate Events" movie comes to mind.

tae the tm burton dscusson to gaaonlne jesus chrst

more importantly!!!!!!!!!!! (gotta copy an i for this) we started watching the fountainhead in class and it is just unbelievable how silly and trite it is how do people tae it seriously

i mean i dunno how close it follows the boo_ but all the silliness is very RANDiAN. it's li_e if an awful sadomasochist romance novelist and a 5th grader living in a world of goods & evils with conservative parents collaborated to mae a story i am not exaggerating one bit. 5th grader is actually generous just picture a complete simpleton who can still read & write

meanwhile the professor is praising it for its insights into the spirit of an artist which is pretty disappointing because it's li_e a poorly plagiarized 'a hunger artist' or a thomas mann story mashed with a paranoid and downright loony conservative american perspective. ramcibodilynoises
