The worst kept secret of the video game world was confirmed yesterday. The PS3 Slim is real and it sounds pretty dandy.

Going on sale September 1, the PS3 Slim will sell for $299 USD. To go along with this, the current PS3 model has also received a price drop effective today and is also on sale for $299.

So, what does this PS3 Slim have to offer besides a competitive price? For starters, it has a nice sized hard drive. 120 GB to be exact. That's twice as much as my big and bulky model has inside. Nice.

The console is also 36% lighter and uses about 34% less energy while running. It is also quieter! I don't find the PS3 to be terribly loud though, unless you are sitting close to it.

I hear that the XMB might look better on the Slim too.  Nifty.

New features aside, the Slim loses NONE of the features that it's bloated older brother possesses, minus the ability to install a new OS. There is some reason for this though which I was not too clear on. Something about new content that Sony will be releasing or upgrading.

So, what does this thing look like?

No surprises there. Just a miniature PS3, pretty much.

So, thoughts? Will this help Sony out in the console wars? Do you expect to see PS3 sales increase as a result of this?

I'd get one if they had more playable exclusives. But as of right now I'm just getting my third 360 (two red lighted so far).

I know it's off topic but...

...

Definitely loving my Wii now that I've softmodded it and have a 500gb external drive packed with games attached to it.

As for ps3... eh might get one someday.... but eh.

I'm actually thinking about buying one of these, seeing as it's affordable and so that I can play some PS3 exclusives.

Only PS1. Someone (IGN, I think?) believes that it may be introduced in a future firmware update.

I'm not affected by this, though. My PS3 is an older model which plays PS2 games.

They said quite vocally that backwards compatibility was "not on the table"

they've ditched ps2 compatibility a long time ago and they stopped supporting linux in this one.

It looks like the PS3 lost the glossy finish and touch-buttons as well with the slim

I thought they patented some technology which could be used for PS2 backwards compatibility just this summer. Or maybe I remember wrong.

Anyway, I don't care about the slim but price drop is great news for those who don't still own a PS3. And for PS3 owners too since increased sales will bring in more developers.

And I can't believe there's a single person who would seriously prefer Wii over 360 or PS3. The amount of decent games on Wii is alarming and 90% of them are by Nintendo. And those are all sequels.

That guy bobby kotik who is the CEO for activision said he wanted to scrap development of PS3 games because the core system was too expensive, what a stupid cunt. I am glad they released this so he can shut his dumb mouth. I mean in a business where PR is key that was a dumb thing to say.

They need to add co-op to more games and have a better system for online play similar to the 360's to be a real competitor. My PS3's controllers are gathering dust at the moment and they will be until the release of Mafia II given this summer's drought of good games.

The only way I'd sell my current PS3 pick this up is if they fixed the PS2 backwards compatibility.

I swear I am gonna beat the next person who whinges about the backwards compatibility to death with a Playstation 2.

Just buy a used one for cheap, plug it into your TV. Why on earth you'd sell your PS3 at a great personal loss (considering the amount you initially paid for it) just to get a new one that has backwards compatibility at a greater price? It is so beyond me why people adopt these community-whinges that they read on kotaku or whatever then proceed to whinge about something they haven't really thought much about themselves.

why wouldn't it be backwards compatible with the ps2 if they still release ps2 games? i actually sort of want a ps3 because i've been GETTING VIBRATIONS recently from games that haven't even been announced (may not exist). i don't even know what's on the ps3 but i know eventually there will be things i want to play. don't they release a new console every 6 years or so? how long has the ps3 been out? 4 years? maybe i should just wait for the inevitable ps4???

This is bullshit. I bought my ps3 just 6 months ago for 499$ with no games whatsoever

I was already angry when I saw kits that came out later for 499$ with like two good games

but now this is 200$ cheaper, god damnit ugh

It's typically every five years. This generation is supposed to last slightly longer though, and they believe that the current gen consoles hold us over until 2012 or so.

They = Industry insiders. Some CEOs of companies, I forget which. Bioware was one, I think.

But the consoles this generation are stupidly powerful in comparison to previous generations. As far as I know, developers are supposed to be able to squeeze more out of them.
