i think you're assuming that racism has to be intentional.
this is something that is fairly common.

ok that makes sense, I didn't think about that.

But, I wouldn't think that becuase Jake is white that it was designed that way to have some sort of superiority over races or what have you. I dunno, he's just a guy, a human. Fuck it, I know what you guys mean and I understand it better now, but I still don't see avatar as being designed that way purposely to make white people look greater
like imsotired said and Roman was trying to explain with the ad he posted, it's not intentional. it's a kind of racism that people don't even realize they're doing. this doesn't mean that it's not a problem

actually I probably could have done a better job explaining this from the beginning, that's my fault. I think I assume responses can only be so long before the other person loses focus

man no one responded when i posted that essay in the topic a while back =(

also lyndon one of the first things you learn in a race studies class is institutionalized racism. think about it - you saw jake as the main character - stereotypical white male - and automatically assumed he's "some average guy". we're at the point where we consider white as something neutral and not one out of many races - this is something that's talked about a lot in the film and tv industry

INHERENT RACISM basically. it's hard to see in the beginning, but after you realize what's going on you start noticing it everywhere.

the correct answer was nothing, it's just a picture of a bunch of workers represented by marathon runners who symbolize the speed and efficiency with which they will be able to work with their new Intel Core 2 Duo Processors, and their satisfied employer.

edit: go away omcifer, you're fucking everything up

I'd like to point out that the shadows are all wrong[/s]

No they aren't

And I don't see what is racist  about  "white guilt"

I see where you're going with this, but really in the movie it's not like the na'vi are in awe of white man prowess, its just a human who actually wants to be a na'vi (and actually has been inaugurated at this point).  I see how one could take it as 'white man showing how its done' but since this story has been told so many times before, I think it is unintenional if there at all. Do you think Cameron sat down and thought "hmm, how can I make white people look greater in this story". It's there if you want to see it
Have you actually seen the movie?  The Na'vi are not at all in awe of the human technology.  In fact they have absolutely no interest in it at all.  this is what happens when I post early in the morning.  sorry.

I totally get why someone would be upset by this sort of racism in Hollywood, but when their motive really seems to be "YOU SHOULD HATE THIS MOVIE TOO BECAUSE I AM SHOVING YOUR FACE INTO THIS RACISM" it gets pretty annoying.  Calling everyone an idiot for "not getting it" is no way to go about it.  Most people just saw Avatar to enjoy a big dumb action flick, so how do you expect to win any kind of argument with this shitty attitude?

This isn't about making people look like idiots. Complaining about that is a total cop out - all you are interested in saying is that Avatar is a lot of fun even if it is racist.

Guys, this movie sucked so much.  So so much.

it was seriously laughable.  THEY RAPED THEIR ANIMALS WITH THEIR PONY TAILS.  "YOU ARE MINE NOW...!"

but hey at least we saw tons of purple alien nipple.

I keep seeing stupid buzzwords like "white guilt" get thrown into these arguments and everyone's knee-jerk reaction when someone opposes these claims is "you're white, so that's why you're not getting this."

As soon as you slap the word "racist" on something, it generates all kinds of anger on both sides, and then you get one side that wants to call a movie with an amateur plot racist while another group defends the film by saying it's a masterpiece.  Neither side seems to be arguing over the same topic.  I don't see anyone really saying that it's not racist here.

There seems to be this fucking group in GW that just has to make ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that everyone knows they hate every fucking thing that ever comes out in any form.

i was going to come here and post that same article re avatar 'being racist'

if you dont understand what is wrong with avatar even after reading that article then you have some problem with reading comprehension because it lays it out pretty clearly

to clarify it is not about jake, or anyone, being white - jake could be black and the message would be the same

on the surface, the message is very feelgood and seemingly innocuous - the people of pandora are being overrun by people from earth and need help. its when you factor in how the film gives this help that problems surface. it is not enough to have the characters help themselves, we have to ADD a character, to integrate himself into this savage society. then he not only integrates into the society but becomes the most important person in their society and literally becomes the savior of their race. the film is not about race issues, but its ATTITUDE betrays the racism inherent.

one of the most important sentences in that article is this:
Quote
This is the essence of the white guilt fantasy, laid bare. It's not just a wish to be absolved of the crimes whites have committed against people of color; it's not just a wish to join the side of moral justice in battle. It's a wish to lead people of color from the inside rather than from the (oppressive, white) outside.

so we have gone from realising the inherent wrongs in racism past and present, figured out we need to fix it... and then we feel that we, as whites, are the ones who HAVE to do it! we are the savior of the black race!

it all stems from very innocuous thought processes, and it is not inherently racist in itself, but its a general attitude that is propagated EVERYWHERE, and as you realise how widespread it is, you will realise the problem

the other important sentence is this:
Quote
Avatar is a fantasy about ceasing to be white, giving up the old human meatsack to join the blue people, but never losing white privilege.
and that sums it up.

having said that, avatar is a visually stunning film even if it has a terribly bland plot and writing, and is probably worth seeing.

ahaha xanqui I don't even know how you come up with these ideas. that can't be what you actually see when you read this thread. no one has mentioned anything about the race of us posters

to clarify it is not about jake, or anyone, being white - jake could be black and the message would be the same
no, within context it's not the same. context being our world and history and the media we have produced and are still producing. you kind of said this later in your post so maybe this was just a stray thought

who would that be, exactly?  is this the conclusion you come to when someone doesn't like a movie you like?  it's just because THEY HATE EVERYTHING?

edit: like I'm pretty sure you made this exact same argument when Steel and I were talking about that other really shitty movie about the guy who lived forever uuuuuuggggh what was it called The Man From Earth.  I'm pretty sure you got very defensive about that one too.  go away xanqui all your posts are awful

i probably used the word message wrong but basically i meant that it is not the white man entering the na'vi society, but the human entering the na'vi society that is the parallel to our society.
