I never drank all the time, but when I did, I was thorough. I figure I started young, so I've had time to get the "Ah ha, lets kill some brain cells!" urge out of my system. I tried a lot of other stuff when I was younger, but nothing was ever really worth it. Anymore, I don't even take Aspirin unless I'm sick (and then I prefer Ibuprofin).
The caveat to that is that when my back goes out I have to take something heavy to be able to function at all. From past experiences, I've learned that I build up a tolerance to stuff very fast. When my I first screwed my back up, they started me off with Vicodin. Initially, one helped. After a week, I was taking them two and three at a time and feeling nothing. They tried some other stuff until finally settling on Ultram/Tramadol. That actually worked well for a while, but again I got to the point where I could take six or so of the 50mg ones and not notice any benefit (although people told me I was generally much easier to be around but that could also be due to the mild anti-depressant properties it has). The only way I can get any effect out of the stuff I'm supposed to take for pain is to not take it for a prolonged period of time.
A few years ago I was stuck in a really physically demanding job, and my back was dying on me routinely. For a while, I was pulling my (then prescribed) Oxycodone capsule apart two at a time and mixing them in with my morning coffee. Another two went into my soda at lunch. The problem was that I'm naturally an insomniac and with the pills I got to the point where they made me almost hyper, so I ended up having to resort to copious amounts of liquor to get to sleep at night.
So yeah, I've done my time, and I'm content with being "boring" now.
