so what youre saying is the reason x factor has been an uncontested winner for 5 years is these very peoples own fault
its because people dont give enough of a shit about musicians to actually pay for music so the charts are a fraction of the actual music-buying records as illegal downloads are untracable, statistics-wise.

suck on that

pretty sure they're sales charts not popularity charts so that'd be a pretty poor substitute.

even popularity-wise the #1 is always going to be chart topping pop music, this is one of the few instances where you will ever find something like rage against the machine achieving it

come to terms with pop music and you will be less angry about the whole thing

of course services like last.fm are skewed towards an audience that doesnt like pop music generally. obviously there are a lot of users that do but its predominantly non-pop

RATM made it to the Billboard Modern Rock top 10 four times in the 90s. Two of their albums peaked at number 1 in the US. This whole thing that good music - or even better, non-pop music - doesn't chart just isn't true.

This whole thing that good music
learn about subjectivism

edit: this is what i mean about rockist youth being a problem. the outright dismissal of all pop music as 'bad' is a huge problem imo.

also note that mainstream tastes have changed a LOT since then! while it may have been true when RATM were still relevant, it is definitely not true now

Learn about taste.

Just browsed through the list of number one albums in the UK since 2005. Of course it includes a lot of shit, but also names like Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys, Gorillaz and Bob Dylan (though I haven't heard that album), all of which happen to be great. And then lots of compilations and not so good albums from great artists of the past, for example David Gilmour and The Prodigy.

Of course you need to have some qualities that appeal to big audiences and there's loads of good music that's never gonna chart, but not all of the music up at number one is shitty or the same.

And now that I'm in this, what's your guys problem with RATM?

EDIT And who the fuck was it that compared them to Limp Bizkit, Slipknot and whatnot?

are you aware that you just claimed that almost all number one albums in the UK were shit except the rock albums (and gorillaz who are 'acceptable' because of damon albarn)

and i would gladly compare RATM to limp bizkit and slipknot. RATMs serious messages are inevitably cheapened by their presentation, for example in killing in the name which is ostensibly a serious commentary on institutional racism utilising the refrain 'fuck you i wont do what you tell me' solely to appeal to a mass audience of rebellious teenagers

Ummmm, what? If you want to exclude Gilmour and Prodigy, discard Gorillaz (a lot, probably most, of the people who bought Demon Days don't know who Damon Albarn is) and then put Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys and Dylan under 'rock', which for Dylan is untrue and for Radiohead pretty damn stupid (were of course talking about In Rainbows here), I guess you can say whatever you like.

I personally think it's cause RATM is kind of dumb and appeals to the masses because they think it's the HEAVIEST BADDEST SHIT AROUND. Metal for people who don't know anything about metal. I often say the same about Prog and Muse but some people who listen to Muse know what they're talking about, but a lot of people don't.
