Well, I have actively ignored fallout for what and unholy timesink it was, but here is what I will reccomend:

Have 2 planned fighting skills and max them asap, also the repair skill. Small guns and *something else* is a good beginner route. The main plot gets washed out kind quick, but there are some sweet moments (nuking megaton, for example) and some interesting consequences to observe (not nuking megaton, for example). Be ready to discover a bunch of shit you fucked up on, and perks that are no longer useful to you causing you to start over.

Once the man plot strings have gotten you accustomed to a good portion of the world, just pick a direction and start walking. You will always find something cool. Sometimes there aren't even quests involved, but you just end up finding cool shit. Also if you plan on nuking megaton, make sure you've milked it for the quests and such first.
friday night it's time to party
drop it down and get real naughty
girls talk shit, we don't care
we'll take off our underwear!

install fallout mod manager

install fose

download all the big mods

unrar them into /data/

open mod manager

click "play"

probably the most time consuming step is downloading them because the biggest mods are like 400 mb

Yeah, I'm basically milking Megaton for quests at the moment because I plan on killing everyone in there. It's not that I'm malicious or anything it's just I was bullied into it by older boys. I just want... everyone to die happy...

you have to reorder the big mods, enable certain components in the right order, etc etc

otherwise it just doesn't work

you spend an hour checking up compatibility between mods

i fucking hate it

FO3 is only good when roleplaying imo. playing it AS A GAME is really terrible and bland. I also tried playing as a raider (thanks mods) and attackiomng people with raider buddies but it's so bad without the kind of TRADING and interaction.

Yeah the stealth aspect of the game could've been made a little better. Instead of just being hidden, caution and danger. Silly dat.

i thought that was the point of rpgs? most rpgs would be terrible if you couldn't really BECOME THE CHARACTER

I think FO3 is really one that you HAVE TO. Most RPGs are pretty linear and can be fun on the value of GAMES (for example KOTOR and Mass Effect are great at being games, and i think ME really works well for the medium) but you take away that aspect of FO3 and it's really terrible. If you're just playing it for completion and whatnot it really really sucks.

This is harder than it sounds!

on the contrary, this is pretty easy. The MEGATON BOMB, which is very beautiful to view getting blown up from afar (tenpenny tower), leaves a lot of radiation.

Trust me, the above is far from a spoiler, the actual destruction of megaton and it's peeps is awesome!

i think ed was thinking you meant going around and killing everyone in the town individually.  i've done this on random saved games just to see if i could and it can be pretty tough iirc

KOTOR and mass effect have good gameplay but not as good as actual action or shooting games. they're a little bit less smooth or less polished or whatever and you spend more time doing stupid shit like sorting through your inventory so you do kinda need to get into the character. or at least i did. that seemed like it was the point of the whole good/evil dialogue choices and all that so you can make your own character to be fully immersed in THIS GUY??? idk i am really bad at making sentences right now but maybe you can see what i mean

also this only applies to fairly open-ended western rpgs that give you soem kind of choice and character customization to an extent. it's a little harder to get immersed in being an anime dude which is why jrpgs don't really have any effect on me

Ah yeah I had a lot of fun with that (although you dont really gain much except for some weapons/ misc items and badass karma). The stealth suit really helped me (from operation anchorage) as I would just run to an empty place, crouch and i'd be hidden, then unleash fury upon 3-4 different people it VATS mode. good times.
