i read on wikipedia that the black character "has a pet baby chocobo that lives inside his afro." i'm sure this is offensive somehow, but i'm still figuring out how. i'll get back to you guys when i figure it out. maybe he has a chocobo instead of a brain??????
i have some renewed interest in the series after final fantasy 12, but not a whole lot. square hasn't made a legitimately interesting game in ten years and nothing they've done indicates that they'll start now.
still, i'm probably a bit more excited about this game than i should be. i do still enjoy story-based rpgs, and games in general where the story directly interacts with the flow of the game, and if absolutely nothing else, this game does look to fill that role. i am generally glad to see them go back to a modern-futuristic setting, rather than the stale fantasy setting that square clearly doesn't have anything interesting to add to, but my better sense tells me that they don't really have the talent or the dedication to do anything of merit with it. i still stand by final fantasy 7 and 8 as qualilty games, but that was an awfully long time ago, and square is clearly a lot more interested in being sexy than making an engaging experience. i mean, it would be hopelessly naive of me to assume that final fantasy 13 could possibly be better than lost odyssey was, and i'm not all that crazy about lost odyssey. aside from the text-only dream segments(which were outstanding but totally separate from the rest of the game), lost odyssey was a profoundly underwhelming game.
really the only thing that legitimately intrigues me about final fantasy 13 is the soundtrack masashi hamauzu is doing for it. sometimes you can tell he isn't really giving a shit and just phones the soundtrack in, but every few games he goes absolutely berserk and does things that you would not expect from game music. i'd probably call him the most adventurous and versatile game composer, if not necessarily the most effective, and when he's really going off doing wacky shit he can make soundtracks infinitely better than the games they appear in. the unlimited saga soundtrack is a great example. an utterly worthless game, but the soundtrack is really outstanding. i still listen to it with some frequency even though i don't think the game is the slightest bit worthwhile.
this song makes me suspect that he might be actually giving a shit about the soundtrack:
i'll be able to enjoy final fantasy 13 a bit more if hamauzu actually attempts to make me give a shit about the game. i don't think that's necessarily that shallow to say, since i think uematsu was a major driving force behind the final fantasy series being so good for so long anyway. i would have liked final fantasy 12 a lot more as well if the soundtrack wasn't so painfully lifeless and uninteresting. although maybe i should just pick up the ff13 soundtrack and forget about the game?
i dunno. i'll pick the game up i guess, but i probably shouldn't continue to encourage them. square went from being the best company in the business to being one of the WORST. the only people who buy their games are imbeciles who don't know the difference between a good time and a kick to the temple, and idiot suckers like me foolishly hoping that they'll figure it out again.
