chocobo song

haha I was expecting something a lot weirder thanks to the internet/etc. (merzbow chocobo) but I did thoroughly enjoy that. And I just realized I have possibly never liked a snazzed-up version of the chocobo theme before this (didn't FF7 have a SURF ROCK version that one gives me night terrors)

yeah this look awful though. I mean I refuse to believe that even if Final Fantasy 7/6 is outdated now, if that youtube video is the beginning of the game no way it creates interest like the beginning of 6 and 7 did

it's sad I still have the exact same opinion I did when I was I dunno 10, that if Square really wanted to make the game 'look' better, they'd invest in some crazy experimental cel-shading technology to capture the look of the 2D games but in 3D and you can move around in it. When I see screens of FF6 I still think it fucking looks like a painting. Like you're playing a painting. I don't understand how they went so wrong with the art direction even if everything else started sucking. Even the prerendered stuff in the Playstation games had this weird sense of purpose to it, looking at some FF7 screens some of them look a little cheap by now (like areas like the Shinra building are just kind of functional) but they still hold up in a sense like this would be a really good drawing if you drew it. Also I haven't been interested in things like, what the monsters look like in a Final Fantasy game since the SNES days. Not that I grew out of that, just literally no monster design since from 7 on has been very inspiring to me and this isn't all newer rpgs, I thought Dragon Quest VIII did a great job realizing the monster designs, it gave at least some small incentive to keep playing the game. FFXIII barely generates any interest for me at all.

I also think part of the problem is as 'creative' as FF tries to be now it's basically just a bunch of pretty people in weird costumes running around, did the guy in the Youtube video say the game had a darker feel? Maybe FF7's story had huge flaws but they still depicted Midgar as a shithole really really well, I mean you could sort of write your own story about what the hell happened in your head. And FF6 was basically like FALLOUT or some game like that in the second half, I remember being sort of scared because you weren't sure exactly how much the world had changed and if I remember correctly the areas you had to check out got a little more dark like wasn't there a crypt and stuff? And something about a cult and the whole suicide thing with Celes. Do Final Fantasy games even have OLD PEOPLE anymore or is this concept of not being young and hip and pretty too dark for a Final Fantasy game now

I don't see how anyone could be excited for this game. I was excited at first with the futuristic atmosphere and the return of turn based battle systems, but the more I learn about this game the more it seems like FF10. I remember an early interview where this guy described FFXIII as the attempt to make a game version of Advent Children. All the characters seem awful (FFXII had some interesting character designs, even if their backgrounds and motives weren't explained adequately), the game is being described as very linear for at least half of the game (I hated that in FFX, while it does allow for better story telling compared to something like XII, they never made good use of it and it was just annoying going through a set of embarrassing cutscenes). The gameplay might be good, I don't know much about it, but I prefer turn based battle systems to realtime ones. I loved the battle system in FFX, but that was the only thing I liked about that game.

For the last 10 years I've looked forward to every new Final Fantasy announcement hoping they'd do something really groundbreaking or at least as good as the stuff they did with FF8 and earlier games (didn't like 8 overall, but it's much more imaginative than any game that followed it). It's always a disappointment though. FFXII was close, but the huge dungeons and focus on exploration over telling a coherent story or making us care about the characters was annoying. It's the only modern FF game I didn't bother to beat (got to the last dungeon) because I just didn't care about the story enough. I don't care about monster hunting either, especially as it becomes the primary minigame in the recent games. I always thought minigames were supposed to be a break from the game's system, not be more of the same. So yeah, I'm not really looking forward to this one. Part of me is still hoping it'd prove me wrong, but I doubt it.

run in a straight line and fight a battle every 4 steps.

That's what I got out of it.  Don't get lost in that straight corridor!

the problem is they replaced amano with a manga artist.

Thank heavens for that. I hated that guy's horrible artwork.

Looks to be like a pretty linear game... combined maps of first 6 hours of gameplay:

Apparently there are little to no towns either and all shopping is done through save points. Starting to lose it's appeal to me idk.

Oh no, shopping is conveniently done in one spot rather than walking to 5 different buildings and doing it. I am in total agreement with those guys who raided amazon.jp with terrible 1 star Dragon Quest IX reviews!

This is a tragedy!

I was talking more about the map but yeah I don't see why they wouldn't just let you do EVERYTHING at a save point, you know? Why bother going anywhere at all when they can just put it all in one place! Let me get to the last boss through a save point menu I think that would be super convenient.

Haha, holy CRAP. It's like a really, really, really, really bad RM2k map design competition.

the concept of SHOPS AT SAVEPOINT alone isn't the end of the world, but combined with everything else we've heard about the game itt so far it does sound pretty awful. stop being a mongoloid.

like one of the best parts of final fantasy 10, a bad, linear game, was the towns and shops. well actually it was the environmental design in general. but by presumably eliminating towns, or at least decreasing their importance, they are eliminating one of the few consistently good things about final fantasy games.
