The entire conversation system is based off what you ask or decide to talk to the NPC about. Unless it is a plot-line conversation in which case it would work like how you described.

I haven't played Suikoden, haha. I know what you mean with recruiting. I'm trying to get away from the typical rpg or jrpg in that this is a single hero campaign. Except with some realism. People will join you from time to time, but only for the specific time needed. For instance, if you take on a quest to escort someone from place a to place b, they will then be in your party. It would not be wise to let them die however, since there are no revival spells in this game. A death of a quest character would mean that quest could not be complete.

HB, that's an intriguing character. I'll have to find a spot for him.

I llike the idea of being able to have people rejoin your party throughout the quest should they so offer.

I think I've already said this before, but the words "Realm of Luna" bring to mind for me an image that may be entirely different than yours, but which I find fascinating and which you should consider.
Since Luna is the goddess of the moon and madness, and since moonlight can, at least to the eyes, change reality and alter boundaries, I envision the "Realm of Luna" As a sort of inter-dimensional area, or "Luna" as a sort of moon on an inter-dimensional orbit. This would make some of the NPCs, and possibly the hero as well, wanderers from other universes who seek to return home, and make the "Realms " parallel universes, with Luna as a crossing point, allowing for adventures in the different home realities of various NPCs as well as in Luna itself. This would also help tie different modules together, as the hero might be called upon to assist  NPCs who have returned to their home realms with problems there.

*Edit*
PArdon me, I'm sure you already have your own plot well in hand. I guess I Was simply trying to make suggestions and trying to give some coherent explanation for why the chracters I'm submitting were turning out to be a weird jumble.

I do have some loosely "moon" related music if you're interested.

"I envision the "Realm of Luna" As a sort of inter-dimensional area, or "Luna" as a sort of moon on an inter-dimensional orbit."
Luna is its own world with its own religions that define its Universe. Expansions will allow you to travel to other realms (dimensions) which will be their own worlds with their own religions that define the Universe. So, that is dead on.

"This would make some of the NPCs, and possibly the hero as well, wanderers from other universes who seek to return home"
You just outlined the hero's main campaign. Way to guess the plot. However, our hero is alone in being from another dimension and is brought to Luna against his will with no memory of where he was from.

"and make the "Realms " parallel universes"
That is what they are, yes. The circumstances of the alternate realms coming into play will be a direct result of the hero trying to find a way back to wherever he came from.

"with Luna as a crossing point"
Yup, this is why I'm leaving a lot of expansion room in the original world.

"allowing for adventures in the different home realities of various NPCs as well as in Luna itself."
Ta da, you seem to be on the same wave-length.

*Bows* Thank you, thank you!   Your clarification also makes it somewhat clearer why the other characters only stick around for a short while- as an amnesiac wanderer who knows only that he doesn't belong, it would be hard for the hero to forge connections. However, please DO consider the possibility of his re-encountering certain characters multiple times throughout his quest- since the hero has no memory of the past, it becomes extremely important that he forge new memories and relationships in the present, and friendships may be the only thing keeping him sane . . .

The game is non-linear, so the hero can visit whoever he wants whenever he wants. Certain characters will be crucial to revisit, others will be beneficial. The second character you meet in the game is a small boy that is instantly willing to offer friendship.

i'd guess that kid is actually a demon or something who you will fight in the end..
--------------
could i also recommend another character :)

Name: Andres
Gender: Male
Adult
Human.

Personality:  OVERLY Competitive. Wary and observant but is very clumsy by nature.
despises VELESIANS.

Quirks:
Talks to himself outloud even if others could hear him talk about his supposedly  private or secret thoughts.

Loves flowers and makes 'flowery' (flower references and metaphor) when in battle or some important occasions - not everytime, it would make him seem like a fool. - it's more of a punchline thing.

Challenges anyone, anytime, anywhere, for whatever reason he has 'logically' raised.

Additional Details?
Musketeer costume.

Idea for interaction (optional)?
(This is a just a suggesstion since i think the more specific a  character is the harder it is to mesh with the others. Use him as you see fit in the overall scheme of things.)
I envision Andres to be some sort of mini-rival (mini because imo he's not a very developed character to become the mainstream rival to the hero).
In some quests he's an obstacle - he and hero fighting over an item or quest.
And sometimes he's a friend helping to kill some enemy or velesians.

Actually detail can be quite useful- it helps flesh the character out, making him a whole person.
However, you have inspired me to consider creating another flower-themed character.. perhaps he and Andres are comrades?

Hmm...HB, that character would fit VERY well with the first expansion pack I was planning. Too bad I have to finish the first stage of the game first though.

Just to be clear, my character is a guy. Is sweethearts still OK? Even if not, if the character still has a crush it could be source of humor or tension, especially if Andres doesn't reciprocate.

Ren, I'm  just curious- how much progress has been made on the actual game itself?

Lots, but there is still lots to go.

Mapping wise, it's nearly complete. However, I keep finding new places to add as I come up with new quests that need specific locations. I am TRYING not to make it too big to start, so that it can be completed in stages.

Quest wise I have a few actually implemented. I have some puzzles implemented. I'm working on a second battle system at the moment, aside from the default. Yes, there will be the default battle system, but it will be designed to be minimal and "realistic."

Magic system is completely designed, however there is a little bit of programming needed, and I may design some unique battle animations as I'm still using the ones from Hero's Realm. I think they are the only un-removed portion of the original.

I don't want to give a % as it would be entirely guesswork. It is a ways from release though. If by chance you can think of any way to speed me up, please let me know. :)

I think you're already doing well by keeping yourself under control. I'll also point out that the Charas Project has lots of resources including character generators and premade battle characters that might well fit some of the roles needed- you could even ask peol.e to design the sprites for the characters they've submitted.  Don't be afraid to turn down a character that doesn't fit, or to ask the creator of a character if you may tweak it a bit. I'd think carefully about the use of custom music, especially if what we see first is a demo-which, by the way, is a good way to whet people's appetites for a full game without having to make it all at once... Just don;t bite off more than you can chew, OK? And I might be bale to put together some abstract cloud panos if needed, maybe more...

Well the "demo" will be a complete game, with lots of room left for expansions. So no worries there.

Today's project: Designing Emerald Mine. I've mapped out a good chunk of it, designed the action battle boss (although I need to make the sprites for it AND program it still), drawn out the quest that makes this mine worth visiting, and designed a mining profession to be used here, with some neat little surprises.

This particular project will probably take me a couple days to complete without finishing the boss. The boss is a little tricksy to do, but it will be hells a lot of fun to fight.

I evidently wasn't clear. Please don't wait until the game is complete to show it to us- give us a demo or taste to get us excited NOW. You may even find we'll want to pitch in to bring things to greater heights. Give us a glimpse into your world sooner, rather than later- a teaser, if you will- to whet our appetites and leave us hungering for the full dish. It doesn't have to be perfect or in final form, just enough to get us hooked. That's my suggestion.

I will (and have) periodically put screen shots up. Until I have a finished platform though, no deal. Like I said, the first version will essentially be the "demo." As expansions will have new towns and new dimensions. Sorry, but the less time I spend trying to make a working demo, the more time I spend working on the complete game. I know you are excited about this project though, which is motivation for me to hurry up and finish it.

Thanks- I didn't mean to be rude, and i'll admit I'm impatient. I'll be glad to see it when it;'s ready.  Just remember it doesn't have to be perfect or custom-everything to be good..
