stuff like this makes me feel like kojima maybe could be in the same general ballpark as suda 51 if he wasn't going so far out of his way to be completely awful. it's kinda like he tries to be EVERYTHING but really succeeds in being NOTHING outside of a guy making awful western action film mosaics out of his games. he appears to be a reasonably creative and unique guy on some level i guess, at least as far as videogame creative people go, but everything he's made(that i'm aware of) is just horrifically derivative of something else that another guy(often himself) has beaten to death.

basically i don't like kojima because he is really one of the very few AUTEURS in the medium but invariably does nothing with it but churn out sequels and take pictures of himself trying to be cool. he's a pretty big waste of time as far as i'm concerned, which is unfortunate because it's not really because he's fundamentally bad at what he does. he just doesn't have any real interest in making anything creatively worthwhile(and has openly admitted as much in interviews at various points). just pumping the mainstream.

I agree with this on every point except that I DO like Kojima.  But I do dislike what he does quite a bit.  Like you said, he could be a suda 51 type dude, he just...WON'T.  He has all sorts of ideas floating around in that head of his but instead he just makes the next typical metal gear game, interviews with him show that he blatantly has IDEAS and he has the actual potential to do way more but those games just are never made.  It just sort of makes me siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh.

then what is it you like about him??? i can understand liking someone who has this unrealized potential, but with kojima it's like he is aware of it and consciously avoids it, just trying to make as much money and create as cute a self-image as possible. i can almost forgive all the others in the industry because they just aren't creative people and are totally oblivious to how they could do more with the medium, but kojima isn't and his whole career is really just a byproduct of his adamant decision that video games is money. to me, that's so much worse. i'd honestly put more blame on his shoulders for videogames being complete and total shit than really anybody because he clearly has the faculties and the industry influence necessary to do something about it, but just doesn't.

Well idk I guess I like HIM but not what he does??? It's hard to explain but I guess I just feel like he's a SHAME moreso than I dislike him.  Sort of like Jackie Chan atm, I like what he used to do but like the shit he does now is kinda GROSS and I think it's a shame but I don't dislike him for it.  I guess I really don't have a good reason!!!

he seems sincere enough, but the man is working on projects that cost in the ballpark of 50-75 million dollars that need to appeal to 14 year old american boys(and those with similar mentalities) in order for his company to see a return on their investment. That has to seriously hamper the creative process.
I don't think he's crazy or even that talented/creative though, he's like a japanese tom clancy in an industry filled with R.L. Stines.

http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3169166

this guy is like the only japanese game developer (person) I think is authentically cool

well I don't know anybody who worked for the company but I would also fund the reopening of Artdink if I had ridiculous amounts of money to waste

Edit: oh wait Artdink is still in business, but they seem to be mostly doing simulation games now and not fucking OUT THERE games that will sell maybe 97 copies worldwide. Only weird playstation 2 title I saw was some fighting game where you play as construction equipment

btw that's why games like Braid piss me off, if you don't really have profit in mind or just enough to maybe get some soda pop and dungarees you can literally distribute a game for nothing now, and tools that simplify the technical parts like coding, I want to see more simple ideas that people just do because you can do random shit if you want like you can just spend a weekend making some random game about being a guy who works at a dry cleaners. I don't know but somebody make more games like this instead of some pretentious shit that throws a bunch of arty ideas they don't understand and is obviously motivated by attention whoring. More games where you only motivation is laughing your ass off at the sheer absurdity of the concept

Edit: I think even RPG Maker games have this severe paranoia about being WELL-ROUNDED or having everything for everyone thrills spills chills I think that one game where you play as the RTP dog sprite is the most genuine honest rpg maker game. Or just the game that tries to piss everybody off (mr big t's) well I'm not saying go piss everybody off because one game did it but I don't think people even get in the mindset like I could just say fuck it at any time and piss everybody off if I wanted to it's my game it's not my livelihood at stake and it's not for THE COMMUNITY or whatever

Edit: Kenji Eno serious seems like the (I dunno name some actor or something that fits into this category) like consciously trying to cause chaos in the game industry from the inside and reveal how grotesque the industry really is. Well TRYING at least I don't know if he was really effective

Edit: Maybe the interview is a little rambling but he made a puzzle game that's like one of those pornographic games where a picture of a naked lady is revealed as you eliminate more tetris blocks or whatever but it's not porn instead by completing puzzles you save a bunch of girls from creepy perverted middle-aged dudes who play those sorts of games

Edit: I wonder if Kojima really has any gay/sexual issues going on or if he was just totally throwing random shit in there in brute force so at least some of the elements will create controversy/get attention (lady gagas) like he isn't a smart enough guy he wouldn't know that HURT ME MORE SOLID SNAKE wouldn't naturally lead to assumptions about the game designer what's going on in his head what floats his boat what cools his pie what feeds his cocker spaniel. Or even that it was just the first time somebody just had GAYNESS in a videogame not in a Cho Aniki cheap laugh sort of way just in there as a part of the game. or was it just to appeal to people who like fanfiction (hey guys remember treesock)

Edit: He's basically the lady gaga of video gaming sorry guys

Edit: it will turn out everybody from Japan ever was just pretending to be daft/borderline autistic just so they could do whatever the fuck they want and be like we do not get your western culture I named this Metal Gear character Rim Job after a dream I had about where I worked in a factory making rims (immediately posts it to kojima blog). RE5 team yeah we just didn't like black people

I've never played any of his games but I don't know if this is entirely fair to kojima. still a pretty good comparison, aside from the fact that video game designers rarely even seem to reach a lady gaga level of creativity

by the way every single person in my one design class loves lady gaga and thinks she is the most creative person ever :(

i couldn't agree more.  She is like capable of being an actual musician on occasion, and its a shame that people aren't able to appreciate that and would rather give money to hear her dance in a bubble dress to a computer playing beats while she talks about not being able to answer a telephone call

There must be a lot of people born on January 1st

also not to be pessimistic or something but I mean the Lady Gaga thing was good but I think if her music was that way she probably wouldn't get noticed over other people who make that sort of music I mean it was nice but just realistically. Maybe Hideo Kojima is like fancies himself an ok director/game designer and just does weird avant-garde shit because he thinks you need a little 'more' to make it big in this day and age

I kind of like the more urban setting I guess

Edit: Probably the girl from The Knife could just SING NORMAL do traditional-sounding music but it's also a ploy to get noticed not that she doesn't think the music is good just making it stand out more. That "You Take My Breath Away" sounds like it would've been the most classic song ever in the 80's or something, if it sounded normal and not like public access television/eastern european borat commercial-fi

Edit: Now I want to hear it as like, an Ace of Base song

why do you people care? i mean she's a completely mediocre pianist playing showtune quality melodies that get arranged into pop songs(that have beats :fogetangry:) while she does some kind of extreme Madonna act to satisfy her obsession with pop culture spectacle and fashion.
