Are you texturing the cubes with code or did you make a bunch of textures to go on the same UVs?
 
The map layout sorta reminds me of an RPG Maker game that got a load of hype. I can't remember the name for the life of me but it had lots of lighting effects and a link-esque protagonist but dark and noiry.
 
So cool though. Would love to see it in motion.

hi ed, they're not full cubes, they only have at most four faces, top, front and two sides... i'm generating each face via a separate function which generates uvs for a tile atlas (1024x1024 sheet) and adding them to a vbo, then the whole mesh is drawn in one call... nothing too fancy, really!

super flat looks so good, love the second one so much! very nice textures on the walls
 
mbt, looks great, I like her special portrait image where she's imagining herself all fat :P adds a lot of character to the... well character.

Please take this with a grain of salt! Today was literally the first day I worked on the game and I always start with very basic graphics in these things to be sure I have enough time for gameplay before I add pizzaz.

I wouldn't want to spoil it for you.
 
My main character model (for this game) will be a robot but I am undecided on it's form of locomotion, now wanting it to too closely resemble wall-E or Johnny 5.
