Passage was alright. If it had been shortened to maybe two minutes instead of 5 it would have been better though.

Passage wasn't a game. It was hardly even an interesting thing (for me at least) to watch.

Also it was fucking depressing to me for various reasons.
It was much less a game than it was an eccentric and simple medium for addressing the human condition. The 5 minutes of holding the right arrow down would be more interesting and bearable if it had more variety as opposed to love, and growing old until death. Speaking of which, does anything particularly interesting happen when you move up and down to explore, or is it just thrown in for a little extra substance?

I'd called it more pretentious than eccentric. *shrugs* then again, I'd suppose I'd have to understand the motives of the creator a bit more directly before I could say that. But yeah I basically felt like I had lost 5 minutes of my life for pretty much nothing in return.

the creators of passage tried to pretend it had way more artistic merit than it actually did. when I played it I thought it was cute, but all the talk essentially about how DEEP it's supposed to be only succeeded in ruining the 'game' for me by highlighting how dumb and shallow it actually is.

it also could have been executed a lil more effectively I think

me and catamites (maybe dicko??? maybe both??? i forget) had a big talk about how many awful indie flash games there are that are exactly like this, they go way way way out of their way to try to look artistic and deep without actually being artistic or deep

the only artistic merit there is in these games is the better level of design. graphical esthetics. that's about it.

I wish there were more pretentious indie games that were RPGs/point and click type games, like Earthbound is maybe pretentious too but it's fun to spend this extended period of time in someone's headspace, it's just unsatisfying to have this setup that's only meant to be a level long anyway. In the back of my head I'm probably thinking Braid lasts 5 minutes

if I work on a game again ever it's going to be like that, figure out the message as I go along and if there is a message don't be preachy about it, just be this highly subjective experience instead that's long enough to get sort of lost in

I'm not good at compiling albums anyway but when I do I want to imagine each one existing in a certain corner of my brain even if there's no obvious theme

I didn't think Earthbound was pretentious at all. :P (though I haven't finished it. I'm like 90% there. I just got stuck on something and took a break and never got around to returning to it)

yeah that was kind of a bullshit post, I just meant at least there's a real game on top of it, lots of good moments, not just distilled to this one life-changing message. I should've said Metal Gear Solid games instead of Earthbound
