Does anyone know of any fun world-building, sandbox type games a la Minecraft or Terraria that will run on a laptop which was built for business/school purposes? And anything similar that's not on a PC or PC exclusive will suffice, too. I've heard that Terraria has much of the same system requirements as Minecraft, so I haven't even played it yet just to see if it'd work. It's probably just the nature of these games to be resource hogs due to the necessity of having a lot of info. and objects to process and display at once, but it doesn't hurt to try!

Also, don't mention RPG Maker or any of those programs. Thanks!

OK yes MGS games were pretentious. But I yeah I know what you mean, they were actually fun games (also, the mere fact that they had gameplay at all compared to Passage). though, the story at was occasionally interesting despite the pretension. Though I've yet to complete MGS3 or even play MGS4. Though to be honest I kind of hated the gameplay changes in 3. I think I started playing it on the hardest difficulty like I usually do in games and just found it frustrating/boring rather than just the right amount of challenge/interesting I find the hard mode in other games provide.

the only real difference between an office (normal) computer and "gaming" PC is the video card and I don't think either of those games you mentioned have particularly demanding system requirements that would need a dedicated video board.

A computer built for "office/school" is pretty broad and can range from thin clients to workstations so you'll have to be a little more specific... I've seen those games run on a netbook so I think any computer built in the last 4 or 5 years should be able to run them without too much trouble.

Its a Thinkpad t410, and a quick dxdiag search reveals that it has an Intel HD (Core i3) onboard video chip, with 1273 mb of ram. The processor in it is an Intel core i3 M 370 @ 2.4 GHz (4 CPUs) and is fitted with 3 GB of RAM(thats the extent of my knowledge about the RAM, I dont know any specifics on the speed or type or whatnot) And yeah, my knowledge on a lot of this stuff is fading away, I havent tinkered with much of this for a long time.

For comparison, I loaded up the Minecraft Alpha today and it was fairly choppy, not entirely unplayable, but I would definitely want it smoother if I were to play for a more extended period of time. I havent actually PLAYED Terraria yet so I cant comment on its performance, but id imagine itd probably fare a bit better. Right now im just wanting an opinion from someone who's played both.

Alternatively, I could download one of the cheap Minecraft knockoffs from the indie section of Xbox arcade, but thats really not what I was looking for; Infiniminer could be a viable option but I've only heard of it, I know nothing about it. Idk, could my computer be hampered down by malware or too many processes open at once? It seems in theory that id be able to have better performance, but its not really the case.

Minecraft Alpha is also really old. Your laptop is a bit better than mine and if you use the optimine mod minecraft should run fine. And Terraria is much smoother than Minecraft in my experience.

decided I'm going to watch all of the 'best' rated movie(s) of each year starting with 1920 and ending with the present year.

Not particularly into film work or anything. Just a curiosity of how its all progressed since then. So far I've only watched 1920 and half of the 1921 film. "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" and "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" respectfully.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari actually surprised me a bit. It was pretty good. Figured tastes would be radically different since then enough that I might not like it. Kind of how I thought Citizen Kane wasn't all that great story wise.

Other than that. Trying to fix my sleeping schedule. This is probably a good day to do it. since I woke up at 5:40pm and got a ridiculous 11-12 hours of sleep (I honestly don't know why I didn't wake up earlier) so I'm going to try and do the' quick and unhealthy' method of fixing it and skip a night of rest. shooting for a 'passing out' time of at least 5pm. Hope for 8pm.

Do any of you guys remember Kobra's Corner, the really awful Maddox-ripoff site that some guy kept posting about on GW a few years ago?

If you don't, here's a reminder: http://web.archive.org/web/20080103000426/http://www.kobrascorner.com/index.php?67

Found out today that a) he's a furry and b) he's one of the guys who the FBI arrested in this Lulzsec/Anonymous roundup.  WELP.

Anonymous are black hat hackers with a political agenda to undermine the establishment and LulzSec is like them except they just target whoever they feel like. They're very loosely organized without a chain of command or leaders to speak of. And they've been causing trouble lately. It's the hacking story of the year actually.

Yeah I just looked them up and read about them and looked at a couple different videos.

I don't like the way lulzsec does their business, its immature and unfocused without any kind of higher purpose. But Anonymous seems pretty brilliant and well thought out. I saw a little bit about how they decide their targets and stuff and they seemed pretty collected. I really like what they're doing though thats pretty awesome.

I don't really like either of them but at least Anonymous seem more focused on activism whereas Lulzsec doesn't give a shit and take hacking requests over the phone.

well after further reflection it seems like some of the stuff that they've done or have been claimed to have taken part in is pretty lame. Like the hip hop site thing, no cussing club, and the epilepsy forum attack. But alot of them are rooted in 4chan so I could get how a number of them could be fucking idiots. But the more recent protests they've taken part in are very interesting.

Yeah anonymous pre-scientology attack were basically what lulzsec is/was (didn't they disband recently?) They're still assholes though and I really don't like how the media empowers them. They're mostly just a bunch of script kiddies using known exploits that only work on companies with really shitty security. It's just unfortunate, and very disappointing that some of these companies are very large and hold a lot of users' data. Remember how poorly Anonymous's attack on Amazon went? Cause Amazon knows what the fuck they're doing. And in quite a few of the lulzsec attacks, they forgot to hide the identities of everybody involved.

That makes alot of sense then about the scripting and their actual level of competency. I guess more than anything else I really respect the effort and the spirit of the whole thing.

On another note, After about a year of my friends being regular users of RPOL. I've decided to give it a go. I'm going to try and run a GURPS game on it. (I'll admit to having no online role playing experience, but I have run GURPS games before)

I want players, but I'm not greatly keen on getting random internet people (though I will resort to that if I must) I have at least 1 'IRL' friend who said he'd participate and 2 more that might participate.

Please note, The work on the rules and what not are still in progress as of this writing. http://rpol.net/game.cgi?gi=47421&date=1311305326

Let me know here though if you'd be interested.
