people are all the same at heart but we all make abstractions to define the aspects of our situation to suit us. people can be different because they define themselves as such (upper-class/middle-class in this case as "better than" as previously discussed) and choose to continue excusing their actions for various reasons. classic examples include: "that's the way things are" "i can't do anything about it" etc.

when hearing those things all the time it becomes easy to believe that is the case, and lots of people will accept it. ultimately people will not be the same if people are willing to define their situation as "different" and it makes it hard at times to look past those abstractions and see what is there. i think all humans are equal and deserve to be treated as human no matter what but in american society (only place i've lived longer than a few months) it becomes extremely classist and i think hard for lots of people to look past- "you're only worth as much as you work" and all that. people are people and should not have to be defined by their willingness to partake in those actions.

It's encouraging that a lot of young people are coming out and feeling like they need to do something because they're beginning to realize just how fucked they are.... BUT

I've been observing it pretty closely for a while and came out to the stuff going on here and there's a lot of problems. The "99%", "no politics, left or right" stuff is understandable coming from how inclusive they want to be but they're effectively de-fanging themselves especially when it comes to this "non-violence" commitment and pathetic appeals to the cops. Locally a strange de-facto 'leadership' quickly cohered composed of some familiar faces on the left and self-proclaimed 'veteran' organizers which is a little concerning as is this bizarre/arbitrary organizational formality I've heard about from people I know who've stopped during the day(i.e. very convoluted and questionable methods of decisionmaking).

I'm with Dietcoke, but I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that they're so inclusive. The fact that left-wing veterans flock to the scene like moskitos to a light is somewhat to be expected. To me it's pretty clear what the message is and what the core ideas behind the movement are, and in some way I suppose it's difficult to succinctly formulate a solid list of demands or a plan from A to B when what you're protesting is such a deeply systemic problem.

It's still a bit weird that there are people (a small minority of course) with "end the fed" signs and those who say the US should "return to sound currency".

edit: nobody should be fooled by this "not left or right" thing. That reminds me of the J14 protests which were morally defunct by very specifically ignoring the occupation as a way of "not appearing left-wing". Of course that's a completely different situation and it's not applicable here (and an important J14 site would later specifically refer to the Golan Heights as "Israel" which sort of destroyed people's hopes of being able to include the issue later) but it's still worth noting.

I got Nacirema'd today. it was a little embarrassing at this age and I would have disliked it, but the professor implemented it pretty effectively. he's building us up to question everything we read concerning biases and all, and everyone thinks they're doing good by pointing out that this guy is sexist (idk maybe he was) and obviously a dickhead. then right before the end of class (as he has a habit of doing) he dropped the bombshell and everyone was ttly pwned. I'm not doing it justice, this guy's really the only effective lecturer I've ever had. I've had good-great professors, but every one of this guy's lectures is entertaining

I don't really think it's unusual, those folks are all over the place and have always had a consistent(but tiny) street presence.

1) Stop smoking pot for a while. Or at least only smoke with my girlfriend/those I am close to and have a good activity planned. If I don't do anything active while high I get all introspective and then I think myself deeper into the rut I've been in.
 2) Play a lot less minecraft for a while.
 3) Find a list of parks in the area and explore them, since exploring forests/parks has always been enjoyable for me.

Hmm! I guess that's true. Just a little surprised to see them here, in this particular protest, but I suppose I shouldn't be.

Everyone here pronounces Porsche as "Porsh". The only time I've ever heard an alternate pronunciation of the word was when Joey kept saying it in Friends. Fuck, everyone else in that show called it "Porsh" too - he said "Porsh-a" though. But then again, he's Joey.

This guy does the whole "A-de-daz" thing rather than "Add-eee-dassss" though. That sounds weird.

I'd be down there if I was in one of the cities, just to feel like I was participating and to get some experience in this area. I haven't been paying all that much attention to the protests, just what they say on democracynow and a trickle of shit articles on other news websites, but I feel like I get the gist of what is going on.

There was a big rally in a city park in glasgow last week. I was gonna go but I missed it cos I was drinking all week the week before and forgot it was on (i quit now), so I'll just get my dumb butt along to the next one.

Again, the only person I've ever heard pronounce it with two syllables is Joey from friends. I guess it's similar to the people who call Florence "Firenze" or something? You're from Birmingham too - you're telling me that you hear people there pronounce it with two syllables? (as Porsh-a?) I am amazed if so.

They're totally different. Hence the extra letters to show stress in the pronunciation. Sound them out, it's pretty easy. Notice the shortness of some sounds (represented by less elongated letter clusters) than the others, coupled with the difference separations of the letter clusters to show stress. Clarification granted.
