I love wikipedia

Now has around 55 Frank Zappa albums on CD! Yes, it's at the point where I now need a seperate MP3 player just for his stuff alone!!

Also I think that since I stopped watching anime and reading manga I have become so much more of a japfag.
I can't cook so I eat ramen on a daily basis, and also frequently those little breadstick things in chocolate.
I listen to japanese music a lot(Boredoms, Ruins alone, Acid Mothers Temple, Afrirampo, Boris, Far East Family Band, Flower Travelling band, Taj Mahal Travellers etc) when I never used to listen to it when I was a animenerd.
I've spent a few days writing about Murakami and how he uses monsters to exaggerate how japanese society view geeks but then bundles it up in cuteness, as kawaii is their identification of themselves. (this is thankfully only a small part of my essay but still URGHGHH)

isn't Murakami one of those guys from Japan that's outside the scope of japfaggery even if it's essentially about japfaggery

I'm also interesting in Butoh dancing/that guy who made The Knife videos that only uses red white and black

also that Gerenuk it's like the deer version of that one monster guy from Beetlejuice/Tim Button deer

Edit: give me list of legit things that come from Japan because I know there is some good stuff that comes out of there but all I can ever think of is Earthbound guy, or VERY small parts of things that are mostly intolerable. That probably was just the influence of guys like Earthbound guy that rubbed off/person who made it didn't even know what they were referencing (like how even DATE MOVIE references [good ][/good] (let's just say Citizen Kane even if it's not that exact film))

so guys I figured out the one thing that would excuse all internet trolling/harassment ever, if someone was to construct a perfectly effective/unremovable virus and/or hack every web page, the virus not harming anyone's computer and having a single simple function which is to swap any two words which are displayed on the person's screen. And the two words would be "Republican" and 'that' word

i think it's telling that the japanese anime and film industries are seperate in a way that animated and live action film industries aren't really over here in the west. it's as if they're not of the same quality at all...

Murakami is FINE ART, but thwe anime crowd HATE what he does, because he brings to the forefront WHAT THE DONT WANT TO ACCEPT

he represents Otaku as a discriminated class, but the thing is that REAL Otaku don't think like that, they think that knowing HOW MANY SCREWS WOULD BE USED IN A REAL WORLD GUNDAM is the coolest thing ever, so they tend not to aknowledge him. So he is representing a group of people of which he belongs in a context which they refuse to aknowledge exists.

He is percieved as cool, as the FINE ART market is ridiculously western biased, and so what he does is percieved as EXOTIC regardless of what it is.

the thing is, that what he does is genuinely interesting and UNIQUE AS FINE ART, But because it's KAWAIIIIIII^_^_^_^_^_^, western collectors tend to purchase it regardless of what it actually is about. Which is often the discrimination of nerds.

HOWEVER

his work has a tendancy to be seen as critics as IRONIC and POSTMODERN and criticisng Japan's reliance on the Kawaii and Post-Disney iconography as a cultural idwentity, amd so often gets lumped in with Pop Art like Andy Warhol, Kieth Haring or Pruitt Early(a duo), despite the fact that it has nothing to do with their post-modern critiques. In Japan, Anime and otaku are seen as pretty low down, and it is only the post-post-modern hipsters or the Politicaly Correct psuedo-liberal critics who tend to see it in the light of OMG HE IS CELEBRATING JAPAN NEW CULTURE¬!!!!111 whicj ios plainly absurd. Especially in the context of contemporary japanese society where aime/manga is a highly disputed subject due the the sexual themes and the government's backstep into the 1800's in many aspects (especially the introduction of a 'Nationalism' class to school)

So, yeah it's acceptable to like Murakami, but only on the grounds that you don't have a clue what he's doing.

Basically, FINE ART is the most pretentious field of study in the world and anybody who studies it is bonkers, because it's so fucking ridiculous. You have to read like 500 books or interviews or whatever JUST TO FIND OUT WHY SOME GUY PUT A PENIS IN ONE OF HIS PICTUREs.

yeah I like hims a lot but I think jeff koons and frank gehry are a little better

edit: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=glen+murakami&aq=0&aqi=g2g-s1g1g-sx6&aql=&oq=glen+mura&gs_rfai=

edit sorry disregard this post I don't know why I'm being an antagonist. actually I do I mostly wanted to make fun of jeff koons and frank gehry, but I also don't see evidence of what you're saying in his work. I've seen a lot less of his stuff than you probably have though so if anything stands out I'd love if you'd post it and I promise I won't be acerbic.

Actually I read or read part of one of Murakami's books sometime mid last year to see what I thought of it nowadays because when I was 14-16 he was my guy (after that it was bukowski) and I was kind of laughing and cringing at a lot of moments. Norwegian Wood, at least, is pretty packed with that Gentleman's Noir thing like 'Woke up...rolled over to see her still lying there. Sandwich between the sheets like a calzone pizza filling...I sighed. Took a beer from the fridge. On mornings like this, though, I needed something stronger.' etc. Like ya know, the pussy just rolls up and I'm too damn weak to do anything about it. Guess I'll drown my sorrows. But I'm still a man. There's a mystery to be solved.

Very obtuse point I'm making but I wonder if anyone picked up on that kind of immaturity in some of his books at least? I used to eat it up but, while the temptation is still there a little and by that I mean enough to understand why this kind of writing is appealing, I wouldn't say there's a whole lot of truth to it or anything. Maybe to him there is.

On the Gabrielle Giffords shooting:

Quote
UPDATE, 4:26 p.m.: The Atlantic reports that Tea Party Nation, led by Judson Phillips, is joining in the criticism: "TPN founder Judson Phillips, in an article linked off the e-mail 'The shooting of Gabrielle Giffords and the left's attack on the Tea Party movement,' described the shooter as 'a leftist lunatic' and Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik as a 'leftist sheriff' who 'was one of the first to start in on the liberal attack.' Phillips urged tea party supporters to blame liberals for the attack on centrist Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona, who was shot through the head and is now fighting for her life, as a means of defending the tea party movement's recent electoral gains."

Jeff Koons is pretty cool, but half of his stuff has things going for it, and the other half is so vacant. Yeah he's taking pop art to the extreme with his kitsch stuff, but I feel it's kinda a dead end culturally. So I like it, but dislike it at the same time. But at least he's aware of that vacant-ness as he embraces it a little too strongly in my opinion. Murakami uses the commercial sheen as a tool to get what he wants, but Koons uses the commercial sheen as a commercial sheen, and personally, I don't feel that that is what the art world needs anymore.

I feel prettymuch the same about Damian Hirst, he can do some interesting stuff, but other things like shelves displaying diamonds, or butterfly paintings just make me feel like 'so what?'. He was so much more interesting when he baited controversy and created interesting works. His turn to painting last year or whatever was really embarassing, like the shining jewell of the british art scene created these bad derivative wanna-be-bacon pictures. Hirst has become a parody of himself.

It's pretty sickening to see both sides trying to gain political points by blaming the other.
Guess there's idiots on both sides of the political fence.
