i cannot tell for sure but i think the gameplay of this game may be comprised entirely of running in random directions and either guessing or knowing ahead of time how the level will change.

if there's a simple, obvious ruleset don't tell me, i like the idea of speedrunning absurdist game design

ugh I had this dream just now that I was like at college (all my dreams I'm back at college) and they were selling some books/book fair and there were these really grotesque book covers that if they were to actually exist it would be like genuine ghanaposter style naturally occurring outside of ghana. Well later on in the dream it got that way, the initial style was just like random childhood book art goosebumps etc. stuff I've seen at the library but it was just posted randomly across the cover and basically treated like clipart and even the author's name was randomly copied and pasted across the surface of the book/tilted even. For some reason this was queasy enough but then I go to show someone whoa outsider art book covers but the covers change to something with like distorted animal skull on an altar or some other occult thing like that, done in this specific crappy pulpy way that doesn't wake me but is kind of haunting after being awake and having time to process it. There was also some kind of red THING in the corner of the cover that was like in a Tomb Raider game where there is some texture of coral/anemone or treasure/artifact but it's so pixelated it just becomes this vaguely grotesque abstract textured object. Also the place kept shifting between a college/supermarket without me noticing consciously

maybe I'll make a Goosebumps cover collage to illustrate what the dream was like

haha I was going to make this all-out assault of goosebumps art but this actually reflects the dream better/don't want to ruin the composition

Ragnar, that's really cool. i wonder how often the Enigmatic Sickening Low-poly Mass appears in the dreams of gamers

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FglVuYr0BJg - The Doom modding community is currently going through an interesting phase (Brutal Doom, Russian Overkill, this thing) where everything is just as utterly retarded as possible, and it's neat to see the cartoonish 90s ultraviolence aesthetic continue and even evolve into the 2010s. sometimes you just wanna plow a motorcycle into a crowd of old ladies and play the sort of video games you hear about in kid's books

the grotesque Chozo. vegetable figurine.

really sorry for the posting volume... i feel compelled to tell someone this story. feel sort of lost.

i have just uploaded that last anatomy picture to imgur. I am reading tumblr and come across several paragraphs written from the point of view of someone who found solace as a child in fictional characters. I'm scoffing internally, writing it off as some poor goon with an anime-based Weltanschauung, but in the last instant before I quit skimming it, I look up and see it's written by a childhood friend of mine, a girl who I haven't spoken to in years but used to be good friends with in elementary school. she's an incredible artist; her tumblr is actually for posting her drawings. I dropped out of serious contact with her, mostly because I ended up being a poor goon who couldn't connect to people properly for several years of my life. I go back to read her post with a little more respect. it's about why she wants to go into animation - her hard work, she details in the post, will all be worth it if she can give "a single child hope", have a single instance of loneliness mitigated by her work, as her childhood traumas were eased by animation in turn.

in reading it, I find out that her mother was an alcoholic and died last year. I had only met her mother a couple of times at most, once when I went over to her house. I had no idea.

The montages are good, they remind me of Une Semaine De Bonte or its text equivalent in Walter Benjamin's Arcade Project booke. "Surrealism was born in an arcade..."

ahahahhaha it's a different version and it's even betteeer?!! it really is a lot like russell jesus. elvis croonin' with blake and russell on "love is back". man you KNEW i had to respond/it's a deeper mess, still last...

also. i've started playing this roguelike called "NETHACK" recently... u might have HEARD of it... i've been writing a "DEATH DIARY" of that game and holy shit this game is breathtaking/incredible. i'm not sure, like it would make a great post/topic in itself just writing what the FUCK could happen to you in nethack but then again that would spoil the fun of discovery?? i really, really recommend nethack (moreso than adom i guess??), it's literally one of the best experiences i've had with games EVER (ev4h, teenbonz).

i've always meant to play nethack, but every time i try i get put off by the massive complexity of it and also the ascii grfx (athough I know you can get tile based grfx for it)

You should make that topic Bonzi, hearing other people's strange rogue experiences is a pleasure seperate from the games themselves / plus probably most of us have less free time than we used to by now so we must help each other through this thing however we can.

there's a few survival roguelikes i've been meaning to play where the goal is just to harvest enough animalskin to survive through winter or whittle boats or stuff, i may try them out, if only there was some topic for posting and talking about such things :fogetdilemma:

yeah, it is massive (i play with tile graphs) and that's kinda the thing of it. wait, that doesn't mean a thing... well i me i have pr much played it here and now cos the point of the game is really not have the most succesful playthrough (well i mean YES that finally makes you beat it) rather than the process of learning.

like there's always the argument that artificial assholisness in the game difficulty never serves anything but nethack is kinda lopsided in a sense that it's more of a crude software tool (at least it reminds me more of that, what with the basic gameplay structure + stripped-downiness of everything unnecessary to that system) + the goal of the game really is not the destination (survive/beat the final boss - thus i'm a great player/i'm the best) rather than the learning process and tbh i haven't seen many games who have succeeded in that. it's really interesting - cos if you want the game to be more about a process than the goal then it really has to have some kind of lenght requirement.... mumble mumble... no but yeah, i doubt i can say it any better than this atm, the game is massive cos it's a game about a process rather than physical exploration (well i mean that is part of the process!) or finishing goals.
it kinda says a lot that being creative with the within-game system (breaking the game) is be encouraged by the creator... taming my pet Succubus, growing weed farm in some corner of underdark...!

i think you guys would really like it/feel it/related to our talks IF you just get into that process of bearing arbitrary rules and conditions. i usually detest that with most (commercial) games/it's usually a subject to idk observe or analyze but with nethack it's worthwhile to get thru it 4 me.

sorry for a shitty post tristero.

! that's actually a really legit point dude, i understand. idk i agree, it's problematic - what i said above is true (it's pr fucking cool when i realized/it dawned to me about the process thing and it's been a pleasure/idk maybe something worth explorin into) but likewise i don't usually have time to bear these fucking VIDCON systems like we've talked about many times before, i'm not a 'gamer' either. i churn nethack when eatin lunch/between school work...

i wonder if we need need a genuine disco/dance music/electric music/postpunkdeathdicso topic?? or maybe too few people do that here and i should try to find a forum dedicated to that but i'm not that enchanted of treaddin through pages of ironic & non-ironic italo disco suggestion somewhere in the intrawebs, i need my catamites in that area... :^(

yeah, i think the reason roguelikes work for me is that instead of having to internalise dopey game systems to get at the "content" (jump over ten hundred crevice to recieve message about importance of growing up or something) they make the process of trying to figure out what's happening and all the mistakes / adventures that can happen as you're doing this the whole point. the abstracted letter figures are a perfect example, a mini mystery universe mediated through a play of strange abstracted symbols, if they weren't a technical limitation then you'd have to invent them...

i'd love a disco topic, gotta brush up my disco. i promise to find + post more synthpunk if this happens... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sT4Bid8r4_U&feature=related

i just looked at the first page of this thread and it made me really wonder why there isn't a "John Baptiste Philouza 64" RPG game
