i really liked the multicolored checkered landscapes in bubsy

idk I tend to see this a lot in platformers especially. there's something very artificial about checkered squares as a real ground surface. generally the platformers are contextually ambiguous so they get away with bad attempts at connecting to humans but uh its cool how people just threw whatever they could to get on the super mario 64 "wave"

That platformer actually looks like a lot of fun. I may have to emulate it someday on my phone or somethin' (I got a gamepad)

I liked the video store game from that L.A. gamespace comp, but I'm leery of L.A. cool person kitsch. Regardless of intentions or what flavor of digital hall of mirrors they employ, I get gatekeeper feelings from those people and venus patrol and people like that.

Where in Indiana are you from, Warped? I was born in Lafayette. I have a little cousin who drives a combine for his family's farm.

I intended to reply to gods17 a few pages back. I agree with you about several things (everything?). I agree that it's a "morass of many aspects." I wouldn't want to be reductionist, so I think the aesthetic should be described from as many points of view as possible. You mention a lot of distances, reflections, and others, and I think these are very romantic modes of seeing, and one of the main things I'm interested in is the aesthetic's function and appeal to its audience.

I guess there are different levels of "intentionality" in the creation of these games and digital spaces, but when I talk about the aesthetic being independent of time and context, part of what I mean - and this is a tendency of mine - is to give artists the benefit of the doubt that they are in control of their art. I don't want to ascribe the effects of their art to accident, or upbringing, or mental health, or whatever (acknowledging commercial concerns, corporate authorship, and actual accidents do exist). I mean, not ALL of the people responsible for the aesthetic can be unwitting participants. There must be those who would say, if asked, "Yeah, we knew what we were doing."

I currently reside in the pustules in indiana's hindquarters, a little town called Bright, officially in the Lawrenceburg area for the purposes of mail. Basically the opposite side of Indianapolis from lafayette am as south east of it as lafayette is north west.

I wish I lived in basically any northern city or west coast city quite desperately. My social life is dead here and for good reasons. Too close to the south for people to be anything but hicks, rednecks, hilljacks, hill billies, or river people. Or if failing any of those things they appear perfectly normal except they are staunchly religious-right, which may be worse. The only exception I've known is our mail lady, who says she votes democrat but fails to explain why other than that is just what her family has always done and thinks its not racist to use the word 'nigger' in casual speech to refer to black people.

Sorry, you opened wound. :P
