I really love how youtube is full of videogame death compilations

6:41 in the second video should be goofy but it's really like the oddest thing ever (potential Ghana poster)

really no horror movie scared me as bad because they were polite enough not to throw FREAKY FACES at you without warning like Shadowgate/Uninvited did

the article's supposed to be about religion/lolGod but there's also a whole bit about the movie The Red Balloon and stuff and should be called "Why You're not a Total Dork for Emphathizing with a Videogame Character"

also in the comments section look up "Kloan Choyss"'s comments, he seems pretty hardcore

This is the first thing I found when searching "Amiga game".  Does anyone know what this is?  It looks like a pixel artist painstakingly rendered one of my middle school drawings.  The lack of contrast between character and background is what gets me, though.  It either never occurred to the artist that everything blurs into the background, or since they used so many colors to achieve that depth of shade, they ran out, so pants have to be grass green and everyone's skin is the color of dirt.  The blood splashing out of that dude's armpit is really red, though.  I'd like to see this animated if anyone knows the name of this.

Your post doesn't work because of image leeching or whatever, but that's Sword of Sodan. I've never played it and I don't know anything about it, but I like that the early 80s Conan aesthetic survived on the Amiga in earnest well into the mid 90s.

PS - if you like half-naked men in capes (I do), check out Barbarian and especially Savage.

PLEASE check out Savage.

I have watched the entirety of that Savage video at least 10 times.

This is pretty awesome. Apparently this entire game is variations on Move Left, Move Right, and Swing Sword.

I've really got to check out some Amiga emulation. I think I'm missing out on a whole generation of pretty wild games here.

ha some of those Amiga games are pretty wicked. I have no idea of how popular the Amiga was  but it just seems like this whole alternate gaming history just looking at it.

gah Hunter is like weird Mode 7 game

but yeah the pretentious art games are ok but even stuff like QWAK (6:31) is so odd like some cutesy COLLECT FRUITS SNES game and there really is like no room for improvement but they add all these rich odd color harmonics anyway

It Came From the Desert:  this game looks so wild. Appears to be a hybrid dialogue-driven adventure/giant-ant-stomping action game.  There are a lot of unique titles here I've never heard of, not to mention all of the classic InfoGames/LucasArts adventures I've yet to play.

definitely seconding savage

also http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3GqQmYdjHc&feature=related apparently this is some laserdisk game like idk space ace or something?? i have no idea since the video consists entirely of ridiculous vhs-quality shots of people dressed as skeletons running around a spooky house and frankensteins popping suddenly out of cupboards set to barely-audible sludgemusics. sudden closeup of heiroglyph, followed by glowering witch face. cardboard mummy waving arms to an ariel pink outtake and then a wizard throws a fireball at the camera. its really incoherent and amazing and feverish. women suddenly grinning to reveal dracula fangs except it happens over and over again. entire game just a mechanism for delivering vampgirl vhs clips and stomach sounds.

"this night, the inner of nature, that exists here - pure self - is night all around it, is phantasmagorial projections, here shoots a bloody head - there another white shape, suddenly here before it, and just so disappears" - hegel. is this what he was talking about??

That narrator's voice is perfect.  Once you get past the horrible intro, the gameplay (menuscreens) looks pretty coherent, kind of like a live-action Uninvited.  I would play this!

first time I saw it it was really weird but yeah I don't think it's too bad now. Compared to the NES Uninvited I think it's pretty straightforward aesthetics, like what you and me would've done with the game concept. But yeah the NES Uninvited is so weird like there is this one shot of a porch/balcony where you have to capture the spider and the outside is like this brown dirt field or what were they trying to depict it ends up reminding me of OLD WEST videogame and I'm not sure if this is me projecting or if the game developer was projecting like just falling back on echoes of a western setting to create visual interest. Also that intro with the car crash is pretty stressful there is just this 8-bit brick wall with no clue whether you're in a large city or out in the country (I imagine this takes place in a separate universe from the rest of the game it is actually what a car crash looks like in the world of Stage 1-1 of Ninja Gaiden i.e. American city depicted as this random jumble of brick and glass shops) and the car is going to explode and there is that horrible danger music playing that is like the first level of a non-existent amputee Mario game. But yeah I don't understand this game it's like HAUNTED HOUSE you think it would be pretty straightforward but it feels like a bunch of random stuff left over from Shadowgate/Deja Vu and they just made this third game out of the leftover graphics or just threw in whatever stuff they were good at drawing. I love how it can't employ any sort of techniques normal people would use to make things scary (like the youtube video is odd but it isn't like they didn't fall back on tried-and-true techniques like shadowy candlelight guys jumping out at you i.e. it's pretty much someone just FILMED a walkthrough of a haunted house) you're just wandering through this mansion and the color palette is pretty much like every other NES game and it's all so STERILE that part I'm trying to figure out whether they made the graphics scary somehow or if it's all in the odd spooky NES music strange arpeggiated car crash music. I guess the ghanaposter thing wasn't such a stretch because I love how those are only 10-20% dark spooky night sort of things, otherwise it is very colorful even daylight scenes but still eerie and weird. I love any art that can create a scary atmosphere without falling back on dark nighttime stuff or blue fog etc. and even be really colorful

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheeling,_Illinois  gah apparently Jaleco, Taito and ICOM (the company that made Shadowgate) were all situated in this random town in Illinois (mayor of Wheeling passed ordinances to attract GAME DEVELOPERS to their town Wheeling... a town where gaming happens)

That's such an unexpected location for early game development.  I always picture some brilliant Japanese man in a suit overlooking NYC or Tokyo from a conference room, or a bunch of Galaga nerds in Silicon Valley.

Yaroze

http://blog.hardcoregaming101.net/2011/02/net-yaroze-on-ps1-we-need-you.html I saw this article and realized it never occurred to me to look for Yaroze games online

Would be pretty boss to see these running on the real hardware. There are more out there that I don't have time to look through right now.

Although, speaking of things I read about on hg101, ugly 32-bit first-person Japanese horror games:

yeah I think I posted a Net Yarouze game or two but I dunno I guess I figured it would be hard to find games for it, like I don't really expect to find games for the Playstation RPG Maker even though it's feasible to dump the games to online somewhere. I really wish there was like, I don't understand what Internet Archive is but if they're able to save hours of random music/films they should be able to have an archive of every known RPG Maker game. Or even just a discogs.com of RPG Maker games (RELEASED 2003 etc. etc.) so we know which ones have been most likely lost forever

that Fatal Fantasy is cool, it's cool they did their own 3d prerendered backdrops even if it's only 3 of them. I'm trying to figure out if they tried really hard to look like FFVII or if it's just early 3D looks like that. It's cool how ambitious all these games are. Er not ALL but how with RPG Maker stuff there are bunch that are all RTP and RTP is at least not ugly enough that it discourages people from making their own graphics

oh yeah this is like my favorite game ever

http://www.gamespite.net/talkingtime/showthread.php?t=9274

* The box art
* The more Dragon Quest-than-Dragon Quest graphics (it is literally GUADIA QUEST as a real game)
* You're in Africa or something??? I don't get it man
* There is a town called BREAD inexplicably
* The box art

it reminded me just now of Faria which is some other NES game (I played it way back when I was a kid) and it should be great because it's basically Secret of Mana ahead of its time but everything is so drab and you go to different locations but I don't think it ever really changed very much (each town looks the same etc.) and just in general it reminds me how much I want to do this game full of EXTREMES of NES graphics (like Faria tries to do lush forests but they end up sickeningly green overgreen) oh yeah Faria also had this Justin Bailey-style code where you get infinite money etc. and I STILL couldn't beat it because I couldn't figure out what to do

Edit: ahaha
