The zero star tas is really awesome, there's an underground pipe that takes you to the end for some reason, so an insane path exists to just fly around everything. I also like that the final version of Bowser apparently gives you a pointless quiz with his last breath while he's lying defeated on the ground. "Which reference to a YouTuber did you not find in this game?"

ALSO Dada or whoever knows how this site works, I'm trying to display the 4000 posts in this thread in a print-friendly format for to categorize and consolidate the links and images... is this doable?? (I want to ensure there are duplications of all extant youtubes posted here so five years from now the entire thread won't be a hall of lost souls) any advice from the less ignorant???

all has been said and done in previous page but: burst out laughing at the Star Revenge title screen (its a meee...), that's just so WRONG. there is something discornenting (sp) with the way how coins and health bars etc is displayed with strong black borders etc. love the doom midi's in every map, but I thought it was powerful how the continuously dropping hp level AKA green map is also Bunker level music from Goldeneye, which associatively made total sense. the metal mario level with lava jumping is POWERFUL and it doesn't help that music sounds like Prince's Parade album. natalie psx port-man

Wish my n64-having friends had had goldeneye, so i could have experienced it firsthand!! as a kid I just saw pals playin Quest 64 lol and then Mario 64 and was all "holy shiïiiiiiit" The castle theme..... etc. FPSes were this like far-off, untouchable mystery cornucopia since my parents were strict about games with guns. But watching it now the style is cool as hell, still feels mysterious as all get out to me b/c of the like secret bases with rock outcroppings, big chunky sliding doors, the fuckin orange watch with 1997 gadgets and bunker's geolocative monitors. For starters.

ALT the Doom mod seemed pretty weird when ellaguro described it in her sadly one-off Lost Worlds.

LOL at the skeletons applauding the butchering player in ragnar's post, very clip art, but in like a Harry Potter for the PC 2001 sort of way lol.

what is this need to have a simpsons videogame anyway??? isn't the cartoon good enough as it is especially from the source time period? it's like something that wasn't meant to be looking at it historically... i had an idea for a simpsons rpg when i was little though, at least maybe this plays on the strengths of simpsons (convoluted plot,lots of characters?) than the real life attempts at simpsons video games? i don't remember much of it (might've been more like a secret of mana (secret of mama) clone more than actual jrpg format?) but i do remember this simulated screen of buying supplies at the quik e mart and skateboard is like better mode of transportation than just going on foot
 
in all earnestness though the simpsons characters deserve at least some stilted jrpg dialogue and made a dialogue tree, not the triggered samples/one-liners they've been deprecated to... imagine, a real jrpg conversation with hans moleman...

to me the tribal village level really hits home... not saying that the game understands childhood EVERYFEAR across cultures and trying to bring it home to random 90s cartoon suburbia world, but... the unfamiliar village... the disembodied head of some random possibly unsavory townsdude with a single bone sticking out. the fact that even a pixels worth of TOUCH with this entity is dreadfully harmful. So yeah I think the rom hacker at some point channeled the original simpsons NES game development team who was like.... wtf are we doing here, making these random suburban child danger scenarios... development team has fully formed idea of FUN FACTOR in games but omits it on purpose/as cautionary tale. Meanwhile jealous of this random japanese guy making a game supposedly called "EARTH BOUND" which can slip shit under the radar under the guise of cultural/language barrier (o ho i am japanese i am just randomly spinning this tale of a cult that wants to paint the world blue, no way i am trying to warn of seedy underbelly of america). Also the mayan ruins with the freaking ghost of milhouse's mom - again playing into the idea that every culture's childhood fears/nightmares are linked. so yeah the game is creepy /because/ the rom hacker knows exactly what they're doing imo
 
like why WERE the simpsons games all about wandering away from home and or nightmare world and not just wandering into shelbyville going all the way to freaking china and egypt and this constant sense of dread/danger when they could've just made a shitty cart racer instead

the VR one was hilarious like, hmm we have to make a simpsons game, god i hate this, stuck doing videogames, need a plot... plot... Bart is stuck in a video game. It's like a last-minute version of the Warioware games where the intro is Wario going "Huh, this Nintendo DS is a great video game system... perhaps I can make a lot of money creating and selling games." lmao But instead of doing, like, fire world, ice world or whatever, global fear of simplified caricatures of foreign countries.
 
And Simpsons had like... a very clear relationship with games. They should've just made one of Dash Dingo I wanted to play that and explore mysterious isometric Australian mazes so bad. later in the episode Lisa makes it sound like an rpg or metroidvania too

edit: Nightmare constitutes most perfect video game setting, along with two other standbys, "Literally in Hell" and "I'm Stuck in This Video Game". These premises allow you to do anything you like for no reason. (Another big one is "My Job Sucks" but that limits you to certain themes relating to chosen profession. cf. BurgerTime, Chubby Gristle, Metroid) The big 3 premises encourage inexplicable conflict and entail fucked-up monsters as a matter of course. Doom takes place in Hell, Yume Nikki takes place in dreams, Mario takes place in dreams and in hell*, and they're some of the best games of all time in their respective genres. Oh, there's also a Simpsons game where Bart is stuck in an American Gladiator ripoff? So it's like this dreary kid's game show where Bart fights full grown men and crawls through a fake warzone with minefields to win 10,000 $.

I don't know what culture is supposed to have created the catacombs where Maude's ghost and presumably body is interred [...]
 
sort of that weird ran away from home/in harmful adult world alone feeling is sort of the video game equivalent to the painterly Mona LIsa awkward double background perspective trick, just this uncanny affect that never really get pushed to the surface but is the most integral part of the whole. Upshot of many NES games is being a kid plunged into hell, unintelligible communications going over your head, loam of your imagination.

oh, somebody said that the story behind mario is plumbers stuck in hellworld of pipes etc. everywhere. I disagree, I think the original reasoning that led to the mario games was some japanese guy's stupid comment on japan's obsession with the perfect toilet. So like why not make de facto official mascot/mickey mouse tier guy of a japan a PLUMBER hahaha? Also zen or something, and coincidences between italian and japanese (mario, luigi both have 3 letters in japanese and look quite elegant in katakana instead of those weird miniature/subscript characters and stuff that usually happens with romanized stuff) japanese kid hey i can pronounce this foreign name correctly! neato. also again zen, like how do you even abstract the idea of making a perfectly satisfying game in the first place (lol mushrooms) but seriously a good philosophical question. hahaha yeah, no yeah i was joking about the hell thing. most video games are themed around brutal infinite murder on some level so it's easy to say ooowooh hell about so many of them! mario always struck me as just this really creative synthesis of weird images from arcades that somehow took hold and ended up with this simpson-like revolving storyline. This already been said here, but, you don't really think about weirdness, idk about the toilet and incidentally psychedelic imagery. good points with the katakana elegance it's always cool as kid to see english translated rpgs give you four+ spaces for your name like, this is all you need. also Blooper is reference to The Bloop infamous strange sound underwater

funny story, I couldn't figure out what the glitch was for the longest time, although I was really admiring how brutal the sound design and how numerous the enemies were. I thought it was a huge step up from other recent first person shooters. Then I realized that was the glitch lol
