I find the idea of having an operation to change your gender pretty strange. I think if you need to alter your body through science because mentally you find men attractive and find feminine clothing appealing, then something is I don't know.... wrong? That's not to say I hate transgenders or any of that ridiculousness, I just don't think an operation is necessary.
And as Afura said, I don't have any problem with transgender people and I don't have a problem with them having the operation, I just find the idea of it strange.
Transgender people have sex reassignment surgery because they identify more with the opposite gender and don't feel like they belong to their given gender on a core level. I don't know where science is at in determining whether gender issues can be attributed to a disorder, but I think it's important to be considerate of transgender people considering the seriousness of their issues.

So, does having a surgery to have your peepee turned inside out automatically make you a woman? I think this is just doctors experimenting with people

Don't be silly, of course it doesn't, but it makes me feel closer to what i feel i should have been to begin with, once i hit that point, you wouldn't be able to physcally tell if i were a post-op transexual or a women with a Hysterectomy, i won't be perfect but it's far better to what it should have been.
I know you don't understand it, afterall your all comfortable with your gender, physcally and the roll but i'm not and can't live happily till i can resolve this. A good part of me wishes i had never opened up pandora's box and remained oblivious; but then i would never have grown as a person and still been that shallow personaltied , ugly, overeight person i was and as much as i hate this i have to deal with it. I wish that i had never been born without this defect, either a normal boy or a normal girl but instead i got saddle with one of the hardest things, to be completly at ends with my physcal self, and becuase of the gender roll asociated with it i can't act the way i feel without fear of ridicule.
Honestly i contemplate suicide becuase sometimes it feels like it might just be easier then having to deal with it. Sure i'd be dead but then, why would i care i'd be dead but i like living, even if it's hard and on top of that i couldn't do that to my father. I we just lost my mother last october, and my grand mother might not survive the operation to her hip, i don't know how it would effect my father if i also whent away, but it would seriously hurt him and i just can't do that no matter how hard it is on me.
You may not understand, you may call me strange or even mock me but this is who i am and to change myself is the only way i know how to deal with it.

because someone with a different perspective on gender might feel differently about it

I switch between male and female characters in games without putting much thought into besides what kind of character I wanna play. like in new vegas 4/5 of my characters were guys but in DA:O I made two females and in the nwns/baldur's gates I split it pretty evenly. actually in games like these I probably spend most of my time creating new characters and playing only the first couple hours of the game.

This is actually a good point. I always make male characters unless there's like six to make, in which case like one of them will be female. I (for some reason) feel uncomfortable playing a female avatar that I personally have created - I have no idea why this is! Like a few months ago I chose the female avatar in Digimon DS, then never played it again. It is always interesting to get different perspectives on this, as I have no idea how comfortable female gamers feel considering that like 99% (assumption) of videogames have a male main character.

I almost always make my characters black, whether I make them male or female (which is about 50/50).  What does this say about me?

Once you go black you never go back, I dont think there's anything you can do about that anymore.

you have a unconscious desire to control the behavior of black people, proof that white devils are all potential slaveowners who will stop at nothing to subjugate people of color to their control

In the only game I play competitively I play a black woman because I figured most Straight Male Gamers are scared of both women and black people so it might give me an edge.

And also because it's my dream to set up a cotton plantation

no my desire to control black people is very conscious, it must be some other reason.

meh, when playing a game, I have a strong desire NOT to identify with the character as an extension of me, and have them be a totally different person, with a different role etc, thus simply by changing gender changes my attitude towards the character. On Fallout3, I only ever tried playing as a male once, and gave up before hitting 30 minutes, because it just so didn't interest me. On games like Armoured Core, where you can't tell which gender, I always asume it to be female.  I think it's kinda a flaw that games like GTA don't allow for women playable characters.

There are also sometimes practical reasons why I do so, such as the Male Shepard in Mass Effect has the most bland and generic voice actor ever, and literally ruins the feel of the game.

it makes me feel closer to what i feel i should have been to begin with
this is where the slippery slope starts for me... what if someone felt they should have been born taller? Or shorter? Or blacker? or more jewish? Or in the 1800s? Some people legitimately feel like they should be animals, as strongly if not more than you feel like you should be a different sex, yet a lot of these we can point to and say "sorry but you are crazy." That's all.

Also ed I have to say I totally agree with you. Swordfish, you say you made this legitimately because you wanted to honestly answer questions people had, but what made you think people had any questions to begin with? You say you want to clear up any misconceptions, but what misconceptions are you referring to? Was there some kind of major discussion on the forums or IRC recently about this? My point is that even though you're saying you want to clear up confusion and help people understand, if nobody is actually demonstrating confusion or a desire to understand, then it is 100% attention-seeking behavior.

I know you feel like if you could choose you would choose *not* to have any problems like this, but honestly it's coming across like you want some attention for being different and special.
yes coulombs are "germaine", did you learn that word at talk like a dick school?

it's justified attention-seeking at the very least, but even if it is I think seeking attention is the least of their problems. I mean, the idea that someone would become a transperson SINGULARLY to get attention is pretty dumb. and even if it was the case that every transperson was always looking for attention it still wouldn't be safe to assume attention-seeking -> become trans

I kinda mocked the thread with my game comments for similar reasons ("tolerance" reeking) but I think you've stepped into dangerous territory

How do people generally treat you when they find out?

My parents have taken it weirdly. They completely approve and are fine but are also very um... uncaring? As if it's completely not a problem and therefore I don't need to do anything. Loll

I'm curious... of the transpeople you know how many of them would you say made their decision based on gender role vs the way it reflects their sexual proclivities? I ask this because of the people I know who've decided to take this route in life the reasons for doing so is varied... but is almost exclusively [and ][/and] a matter of sexual orientation. Granted I only know F2Ms personally but it seems that for the most part deciding to live the life as a tansperson was a matter of coping with their tastes rather than 'being born the wrong gender'. If it helps make it easier to understand why I would think this way, the people I know are in their early 20s, pre-op (binders, hair cuts, that sort of thing), and with the exception of one, who identifies as a straight male and has remained single, are in relationships with other men.... two of them identifying as gay males and another identifying as a bisexual male but with a straight male look/ persona.
