I didn't read any of the arguments, but I doubt they bear much similarity to the stuff that's been going on here

that comic you linked to is just a pretty dumb and forced joke that I'd actually take as post-feminism or anti-feminism if I wasn't taking your word for it that they're seriously trying to convey a feminist message. transforming the childish innocence of Charlie Brown's shyness and anxiety towards talking to a girl he has a crush on, into the serious, sexual, unfunny, and adult activity of stalking/getting a restraining order, seems like it's either mocking/downplaying feminism or purposefully trying to instigate an argument/gain notoriety. tho maybe I'm giving them too much credit

it's probably a big discussion in a lot of places because internet nerds are notoriously misogynistic, antisocial, and entitled

Yeah Sinfest's actual comedy has been going down the drain for a long while now. I still read it mostly as a habit and a mild bit of curiosity (plus its a short comic, it literally takes 3 seconds to read each one, except maybe the Sunday ones).  I did not think the comic was funny either, but that wasn't the point. The cited comic is just a very recent example.

My point was that Sinfest IN GENERAL has been constantly bringing up feminism, as well as a bunch of other sites I read, very recently. and I can't help but wonder if feminism has merely just suddenly become the internet's current hot button issue. This has only been going on I'd say for maybe 6 months now. I've been on the internet a lot longer than that and rarely if ever saw a single mention of feminism until the discussions on salt and other various sites I visit.

Of course, I understand that it might just be because of the section of the internet that I tend to dwell in a lot that I might merely perceive this but it not actually being true. I know its not because I've been seeking it out, because I've still checked most of the same websites for years anyway. I really ought to push myself into new sites though because some of them are kind of really shitty now *cough*Kotaku*cough* and I only check them because of habit.

I can thing of a couple of worse things but they all fit into the category of anime-style webcomic forum arguments.

I dunno, I remember lots of gaiaonline threads about feminism back in like 2004 when the term feminazi was really gaining popularity

I looked at SA once a month or two ago and just about everyone had something about transgender or cisgender in their user titles (pro and anti somehow), and there was an undecipherable fyad "goldmine" thread about being transgender and all the metahumor involved in that. and some sort of comparison to the word faggot, with the understanding that it is an invaluable part of their language that will never be surrendered no matter how much the looters and swindlers try and make them give it up

there's probably worse/maybe there is a trend but I don't know what it means if there is

There's been a prettybig rise in awareness of sexism in geek culture within the past year. DC Comics really set it off with their appauling Red Hood and Catwoman comics last year. Also Arkham City came (rightfully) under attack due to the fact that Catwoman or Harley are called a bitch in about fifty thousand lines of dialogue. Escher Girls has become the daily go-to blog for many in the comics industry since it started, and also Feminist Frequency has really helped show what kinda fucked up knuckle dragging apes the male gaming community is.

reading http://www.saltw.net/index.php?topic=66270.0 this thread i made five years ago.

the story in the op was entirely fabricated but i am trying to figure out if the people who posted in it (how few i remember!) were genuine in their amusement or if there was some irc thing like "come post in the thread where gb is a dick." for some posts, it is hard to tell whether or not the poster believed the story in the first place.

the argument that there's been a rise in awareness is an interesting one to make because it seems sort of difficult to notice really long-term developments. although when you really look at it, it's hardly long-term because the modern, online incarnation of "geek culture" has only been around for a few decades at best. as a mainstream thing even less.

but then again, I also remember arguing not so long ago that a recent increase in awareness on diseases like anorexia and bulimia has helped recalibrate what society thinks of as the "perfect female body" (or even that there should be such a standard at all). of course, it's only small steps, but who knows, we might be seeing the beginning of feminism as a mainstream progressive issue much like civil rights in the 60s and LGBT rights more recently. that would be nice, because in my view it's thus far had the least basic degree of understanding in society, out of all major forms of oppression.

I think it probably has been getting more attention in the particular area of popular culture which a lot of us orbit. Not the same websites, necessarily, but ones we are all aware of or which serve the same purpose. A lot of the backlash is really disgusting, but maybe it isn't a bad thing that it is being unearthed. Like you know, excreting the deep set toxins, puss and gunk through exercise - on a group level; some people can't be helped, but others can. These places aren't hubs of social progress, but maybe there's something to be said for individuals who are intelligent entering into those places with some good information and a better read perspective.

I don't know why, but maybe it's got something to do with more women becoming involved in the kinds of subcultures that men used to be predominant in, like video games or just obsessive pop culture stuff in general - tv shows, etc. So then the dissenting opinions get raised more often than they would have before, the issue is raised rather than remaining unaddressed, and suddenly the treehouse isn't as forgiving. I don't know if this is right - it seems really complicated and impossible to make some glib generalization about it like 'oh, it's the internet that did it' without having some information at hand but it sounds like an interesting topic worth looking into. This doesn't seem to have escalated into a mainstream thing yet, if it will, but yes it does seem like something is happening and while it isn't fun I think it is probably going to be a good thing.

Maybe backlash is better than apathy, because at least then the message is getting through.

Exactly. It's easy to be myopic in this regard, and unfairly ascribe what one sees to a general sentiment. Maybe nothing is happening except in a few subcultures that we happen to be active in. I can sort of get why feminism takes so incredibly long to become a mainstream issue (although I'm sure it eventually will). It's more complicated than something like racism or segregation or LGBT rights, and everybody thinks they're already doing everything right. Additionally, the right has done a pretty good job tainting the word "feminism".

yeah I think people were being genuine. maybe some people were skeptical, but you don't need to be fully convinced of something in order to be sincerely amused by it. this is the second time you've revealed the story is made up btw

Staff forum in-joke by gz that became an actual Thing after it was decided that we don't really have much to do with gaming anymore, so we need a more neutral name. It was voted on by the members.
