I own four guns. I like shooting for sport and enjoy the marksmanship aspect of it.
I have a
Ruger GP100,
Ruger Mini-14,
Walther PP, and a
Walther P22.
Shooting targets and beer cans is great fun, but honestly I think that carrying firearms for "self defense" is a bad idea. In an intense situation where resorting to a gun is theoretically an option, you are not going to be a calm, rational, skillful human being. You are going to be an excited, emotional, adrenaline-fueled one. A confrontation like that is dangerous and tense enough as-is; adding a gun to the mix not only makes it more volatile, but more dangerous.
You probably have this fantasy in your head where you are confronted by one or more assailants, and immediately and calmly draw your pistol in one smooth motion. You brandish at them, and if that doesn't outright scare them off, you shoot one in the leg as they try to approach you. The hit thug goes down while the other takes off on foot, and as your would-be-mugger writhes on the ground you dial 911 to summon the police.
Yeah, right.
What would probably happen is two or more thugs jump you, and before you know it they're in your face manhandling you into an alley. They know what they're doing and are in physical control of the situation to prevent you from resisting. Even if they didn't physically constrain you, do you really think the first thing you'll think of when confronted is to draw your weapon? When you finally think of reaching for it, the odds of you fumbling it, dropping it, or shooting yourself are pretty high in that situation. Even then, standing there with your gun in your hand confronting someone is
nothing like being at the range. Allowing that you somehow manage to shoot and hit your target, you're likely to kill them (do you really want to kill someone over your personal property? Could you live with that over your head?) "Aim for the leg?" Do you think they're going to be standing still waiting for you to shoot at them or something? You watch too many movies.
Too much can go wrong.
If you're
really concerned about personal protection, get a canister of pepper spray. It's non-lethal, safe, easy to use, cheap, concealable, and extremely effective. "Personal protection" is an excuse that wanna-be macho men tell themselves so they can carry a "gat" around and feel big about themselves. Don't be one of those guys.
