most of my friends experiences with this have been pretty good though, and as long as you go to like an interview/get to meet them properly first you should be okay

I lived with my cousin on the beach in a condo and it was straight. I was up during the day and most of the night and he was only up at night and workin most of the time so I didn't have to be around anybody.

Now I'm renting a house with my brother and his gf. She's a lil annoying but other than that its straight. I think next time I move I'll prolly live by myself though.

Learn to apreciate cheap microwave meals, I go to iceland as there best value for money, £1 for 500g, most for that price only give about 400g. when you go to buy food, hunt around the area for good deals, like when I was in derby, I managed to find a shop that was doing Two 500ml bottles for £1, buy the pepsi max and that's 1.2l just be ready to hunt.  If you have your own oven/hobs then the best thing is cook your own food, takes a while but it's the cheapest, my advice is google for recapies for inspiration.

I have a 1 room studio for $550 and I ride bicycle or take public transportation everywhere. it's pretty cheap, would recommend. the only downside is it's kind of like a suburb in the city and there's nowhere to get groceries unless you drive, and if I want something to do I need to ride my bike pretty far or take the train into center city. otherwise it's great

my pal is getting an artist studio and living out of that for like $350. large space, not heat-efficient, no running water, public restrooms down the hall with no showers. he figures he's just gonna bike to campus and take a shower there when he needs to. it's only so cheap bc it's in a terrible neighborhood, one of the worst in the city, but it is pretty close to center city

I've always had flats with friends so no suggestions in the rent dept aside from that property managers are easier to deal with than landlords and putting rent on an automatic payment is always a good idea.

Living close to a supermarket is pretty important too. Asian grocery stores are the best ones to live near in NZ because they have lots of cheap veggies, noodles, rice, and tofu. That might hold for other countries too. Buying beans, oats and rice in bulk makes sure you have food when you need it. I have lots to say about eating cheap but my guess is that most other people do too and you probably already know. If anyone wants my ultra cheap recipes though, I have heaps of ideas. Don't eat instant noodles.

idk what area you live in, but you should see if there's old factories/warehouses that got converted into units (they could either be super fancy ones or artists' studios..i'm talking about the latter). i live in one now and am in the center of my city for less than 500 a month, since the space gets split up in any way and can fit any number of people. some people pay like 300 or less even, anyway if it weren't for that i'd be paying a crapload more elsewhere so that's my advice.

I thought houses were supposed to be real cheap because of a real estate housing bubble bursting?

renting didn't really change. I think it might have gotten a lil cheaper for awhile. Buying is cheap but only in places that were building alot of subdivisions and shit where there are alot of houses but in places like the city I don't think it really changed either.

Where I live you can buy a fairly recently built house for like 120-150k prolly as where they used to be over 200 I think but I've been told I could build my own home for less than 100k. Most places closer to the city and beaches are expensive as shit though.

i'm paying about 220 a month with two other roommates renting a 3 bedroom two story house at the moment.  its a bit run down (Built in the 50s kind of deal) but it works just dandy for college.

where do you live? perhaps there are certain neighborhoods near you that are cheaper than others (although of course the sketchy factor increases as price decreases)

Vancouver is basically pretty peninsula-ish in shape and my workplace is more or less on the very tip. things get more and more expensive the further you go in that direction. there's not a lot of shady/cheap shit anywhere near there, most of it's far enough away to defeat the purpose of moving out of my parents home.

I was going to maybe not accept the job based on the location alone but I'm like 2 semesters from graduation and wanted to take advantage of the co-op program before it's too late so i'd have a bit of money and a super resume-booster.
