great pictures, both of you! what stands out about bub's are the not entirely empty bottles of liquor still sitting around some of the rooms. kinda brings a sense of life and even impending danger to the vile doomscape clearly only inhabitable by people on a variety of drugs, the rust and detritus on the floor being subconsciously mistaken for blood . . .

guana, I think you're right that a place being relatively well-known and legally accessible takes away something, but those are still really interesting pictures. they've got some cool overgrowth and the wall art is great. it's somehow better when the vegetation is taking over an area previously dominated by rigid, orthogonal architecture, like in a lot of the abandoned soviet or japanese places

edit wow I missed a couple posts, bbl

they just released the concept design for the the first section of the "reading viaduct park", tho not to the public. so far it does look pretty similar to the high line, but not as trendy and retaining more of the energy and feel of dilapidated industry. that section doesn't touch the part we're looking at, so hopefully we can get the people to snatch it up before it's claimed! we present to em on monday

I imagine one of the other places you're going to talk about is the Divine Lorraine, but what else ya got earl?  I love this urban wasteland stuff and I'd like to learn more about areas like this in Philly.  Except for north Philly of course, I KNOW ALL THERE IS TO KNOW about it.  In fact I'm sure I can dig up some pictures of various abandoned houses in the area from when I lived there.  I might also have some pictures of a derelict warehouse on (or around) 6th and Jefferson that some friends and I checked out last year.
yeah, it is! I haven't been in there myself, I don't really know how, but I was gonna put up some other people's pictures and some history. for the other places, I was gonna do a joint post of the building I live in on the border of Germantown, and the ruins of a house in the woods nearby (SALEM). there are other places I know of, but haven't been to and don't know much about. there used to be some cool stuff along ridge above girard, but that's, as you know, near some of the worst slums of the entire east coast, and they've been tearing down vacant buildings left and right there. also maybe the eastern state penitentiary, obviously that's a tourist destination but it's still really interesting/everyone should go there if they ever get a chance (steve buscemi narrates the tour)

throw up them pictures, I don't want to exclude any wasteland from getting its moment of glory itt

not that everything has to be about video games, but the urban decay of the NES batman games is one of the reasons i really like them

disused, byzantine industrial areas, crumbling brickwork, outlined in a palette of neon oranges and purples / muted grays and greens

^ this is really cool. well the whole set is very cool.
yes very "stalker" or, if you'll forgive my language, quite "modern warfare 2 map" as well

The following is from somewhere around san francisco ocean beach: may or may not count as """urban decay"" but i thought it was cool. like "ruinz" or something

**56K WARNING!!***

(last 2 jpgs from ocean beach itself)

i lived in San Francisco for 4 years but i still dont know the story behind this place and am too lazy to google. it may or may not be famous/horribly touristy...

bonus metaphorical (sub)urban decay near portland, ore:

PS Can we get some coolpix of the Paris catacombs? ive only seen enough of them to be teased

Fuck I wish I had some pictures to contribute. I really want to try urban exploration but I haven't the money for equipment/gas or time. And I worry that I lack people willing to come with. Anybody here in the Cincinnati area that wants to explore some abandoned subway systems... and pay for the expenses of such a trip? lol. All I can provide is a high res camera.

All these pictures are gorgeous.

looks like it might be a dry dock mellytan, though it's hard to tell the size of those pools. nice pics. ruins are fine too.

i ggoogled!!

It's the Sutro Baths ruins

The Baths
Sutro Baths opened March 14, 1896 with a $1 million pricetag — an extravagant public bathhouse envisioned and developed by the eccentric one-time mayor of San Francisco, Adolph Sutro. After working its way through its many lives (Playland, 1960s ice rink, etc..)— burned down while being demolished on June 26, 1966. In 1980 the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) bought the land for $5,500,000.

Fantastic photos, I'm particularly fond of abandoned/run-down railroads and chain-link fences. Very post-apocalyptic, try photographing in dusk if your camera can handle it.

Oh, and the_bub, your photos are fucking excellent. The subject of your photography, as well as the style and look of the photos themselves, is absolutely prime.

well thanks for bragging about it anyway

really, who's idea was it? that sounds like a great first date. for those who don't know what freezing works is, I looked it up and it's apparently what they call a meat packing facility in NZ.

btw I updated the first post with a couple photos. also, they turned down our proposal for the viaduct because they don't believe in ambition or fund-raising to make something happen, just swooping in on other people's success for the least positive effect possible

is NZ depopulating or something? the pictures are interesting on their own, but doubly so if there's some sort of back story to put em in perspective. the only other place I've heard of having abandoned subway stations and schools is japan, and that's either due to rural-urban migration, other economic factors, or radiation

what happened to hide tags :-O
the badmins are gathering up all the tags for themselves, what else is new?

These were scattered across the country. Brief backstory, the highschool used to be catholic boarding school. I think it may have been one of the first buildings to be built in that style, high gothic? New Zealand doesn't have a lot of stone buildings because of earthquakes. The school closed mid 80's and it's protected as a historic site. The attached chapel still gets used and the school has been the set of a few films and art shows. There was an area locked off that a guy was doing artworks out of toast in. It's not open to the public.

We took a scenic route somewhere and stumbled across the prison, basically a new one opened and the old one was closed. http://www.urbanexplorers.co.nz/waikune-prison.html

The railway line still gets used at the subway station and on top is a car park, it really doesn't take much space. It's more like a cave, under the centre of one of the larger cities. Trains don't travel through the centre of cities anymore really.

The orphanage had fire damage and was closed down, but it's a historic site as well so they can't tear it down. It belongs to a pasifika church that's attached, and they used to have art events in there until it was banned.

It'd be cool if someone smart ripped off Silent Hill and made a movie in some of these places.

smart and making movies are mutually exclusive states of being

(not riffing on actual artists making films of course........)

that said im sure there are plenty of shorts/films/blair witch shakeycam mp4s featuring these types of areas if you search youtoob
