Geographic Information Systems - collection & management & visualization & analysis of spatial data, & the specialized equipment you need to do it

GPS is a good/usual example. also pretty much any computer-generated map

We'd have another conservative-thinking-rich decade like the 20's, 50's, or 80's at some point. Something that now that we have the internet I doubt we will ever have again.

I honestly think the internet has vastly assisted liberal ideologies more than any other ideologies.

As for me personally, I would be a lot dumber. I would have caught up on my massive backlog of games to play though.

EDIT: please note I'm talking about the US when it comes to conservative-thinking-rich decades.

yeah I had to geocode the complaints by address and separate them by type/date/code, and that took a little longer than usual since the excel data wasn't designed to be plugged right into GIS, some of the addresses didn't exist etc. you're right that I used census data, but displaying census data is always tricky if someone hasn't already made the specific dataset you want, and the census bureau doesn't do that yet. I said started because that was the last thing I did before I left, and we weren't really sure what to do with the information

philageohistory.org is also nice

idk what I last told you but I'm in landscape architecture btw. GIS is kind of an innately LA thing, since as you might have learned it was born out of Ian McHarg's concept of suitability analysis for landscape architecture. the first of jim's unknown number of degrees is in LA too

know nothing about RSS feeds, nothing about free suites sorry!! i just loove maps!!! :)

google earth/maps is kind of like a really user-friendly version of it.

I agree about the liberal/conservative thingy. I think internet will eventually make everyone smarter in the sense of NOT CLOSE-MINDED CRITICAL THINKER but on the flipside it will be disgusting like no fetish will be obscure anymore for example. Also eventually we'll find a youtube video so bizarre it'll cause the convergence or whatever that thing is called. Somebody will make a search engine that can actually search for weirdness and then it'll be Ragnar's world. No but seriously we'll find people even 100x more ullilillia than ullililila and just viewing their webpage will completely alter the human mind

the internet - the greatest drug ever invented...

Now that I think about it, people complain about there being no unique culture to today anymore, that is also due in large part to the internet. The 80's was the last truly OUT-THERE cultural decade. The 90's was mostly just 80's-lite with nauseating apathy instead of nauseating optimism.

2000's was a culture of cultures in a way. A true global melting pot decade. All the future decades will follow this until some massive event destroys 'world normalcy' or perhaps disrupts the internet itself.

This is me being overly futury: what happens when people start living on other planets? What happens to the internet then? will there be a earth-net and a Moon-net and a Mars-net? or will they be connected somehow? If not, unique cultures may make a come back if we go long enough in such a period disconnected.

haha, maybe there will be a republican/libertarian planet and a democrat/liberal planet.

if you where to link earths net by satellite but that would be slow. Maybe there should be 2 different net offer on different planets one that allows you access to earths net. Witch would have good archive of info at you finger tips. Then just the planets net that's just faster to use since it's runs by cables and for the first 100 year would only be good for communication till shit takes off.

i would be typing 'posts' in to a three thousand page word document, imagining the replies as the orderly gives me a worrisome eye.

no i kinda think so too.
i am almost 100% positive my adolescent years would have been much better had i not spent so much fucking time on the computer and now sometimes i'll be at home staring at the screen doing some kind of work(or even worse: nothing at all) and think to myself 'i live in here' and it makes me feel gross and i have to go for a walk or something

I hope to never have a deathbed, but if I do I most certainly wont regret my time on my computer or the internet.

As for taking walks though that is definitely something I do to clear my head sometimes or just for a change of scenery.

Of course my dad had the same worry as you guys have for yourselves only for me so he'd constantly kick me off my computer and forced me outside. my regret in which case is that I did not have a kindle back then or some sort of portable gaming device to keep me occupied while I was outside. (though I did commonly bring out a paperback when I thought to)

I also DEEPLY regret the needless subconscious guilt I feel when I play a video game that he instilled in me even in scenarios when I should not feel in the slightest guilty. Its like, permanently imprinted in my brain. I'll feel oddly guilty even when I'm living on my own and away from him. It's just like I have a subconscious urge to finish everything on my plate when I'm eating because of him.

oh i have & its not as bad as i make it seem, im just using hyperbole to articulate that dumb 'if i only knew then what i know now' feeling & regret about the past

in a lot of ways tho it's inescapable, i'm back in school and almost all of my work is on this dumb machine with a stupid screen.
when i get another job, a lot of it is gonna involve fucking with this bullshit too just like a lot of the other ones i've had, so w/e i just build a robust enough life outside of it all
