I think trying to get a tattoo that's completely timeless is probably impossible. if you think of a tattoo as a way to represent who you are at a specific point in time, it will work out a lot better. When you look at them, you'll remember the times surrounding when you got the tattoo. If you keep tattoos within the T-Shirt region they rarely become an issue.
BTW, I have 7 tattoos, all on my arms. 2 of them are fantastic and I still love them years later. Two of them, while I don't necessarily regret getting them, are a little annoying because people always ask what they mean and it's a little tiresome explaining them. Two of them are musical (bass and treble clef) that I really dig, and they're kinda small although very visible, but they are sort of "timeless" in that I'll never be like "ugh, music sucks why did i ever get these?!?!". The last one (which was my first) is cool because my brother and I have the same one, I drew it myself, and it's just a super personal thing between me and my closest friends. But that one also gets tiresome to explain because there's not much to explain about it.
I love tattoos and I think everyone who's even marginally interested should get one. It's a really novel experience. My first big tattoo took like 2 1/2 hours, it was crazy. The adrenaline after you're done is out of this world. It's almost a meditative experience. It's awesome. But my two big, colored tattoos are done by the same artist near my house, and he's really talented, and I'm eventually working my way up to a half-sleeve, which is basically from my shoulder to just above my elbow, meaning it's easily covered by a t-shirt but still big enough to really have a "story" if you will. I take a long time deciding what to get, most of my tattoos are at least a year apart, sometimes two. My two big, colored ones are on my upper arm, and I plan on getting 1, maybe 2 other large things, and then filling in the areas between them to fill out the sleeve. My plan is to design the other element or two myself, and then let the artist freehand something between it all.
