I just thought I'd let you all know.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/index.html

Sadly, there's no release date that I saw.  Well, there's a pretty amazing list of composers contributing to this project though, including Yoko Shimomura (Super Mario RPG, Kingdom Hearts, and Legend of Mana) and Tomoko Sasaki (NiGHTS, Ristar), composers that will hopefully give a clue to the nature of the character roster.  Supposedly there will be daily updates, though.

If anything, the interface looks a lot cleaner.

This was kind of a let down.  Hopefully they'll actually say something about when the damn thing is coming out.

You expected a release date this soon?

Silly rabbit.

It's an amazing list of composers though and I like the new title music.

If anything, I expected the interface to be like the old ones. Sure, this one is cleaner, but it looks much cheaper.. and well... a bit too big.

That list of composers looks awesome imo. I'm looking forward to getting daily updates on this, I rather like the new site structure. Also interesting that the "How to Play" section shows the Wiimote on its side as its icon when the game was originally advertised to mainly use the Gamecube controllers. I wonder if this is just a site aesthetics thing or whether they have made a lot of control-related changes.

I was hoping that this'd tell us a bit more. I like the day/night thing on Battlefield, though. And damn, I want a release date YOU'VE GONE TOO FAR NINTENDO.

SSBB is supposed to be out in 2007 though, isn't it?  I don't know why setting at least a release MONTH would really be too soon.

OMG :shocking: to the composer list. This gotta be connected to actual characters too. I mean why would there be so many composers, if their original music wasn't introduced? It would be awesome if Nintendo got more 3rd party with them. I don't know how complicated 3rd party characters would be law-wise but I'm sure many developers would be happy to see their characters around.

EDIT: Seeing that page really made me want Wii. I'll propably get one with SSB just as I did with Gamecube.

Holy shit Yuzo Koshiro!

His works are awesome and hopefully that may be a chance for Streets of Rage characters to show up. Or at least I can dream of it.

Despite how interesting this is though, I would have expected more real news (like characters) now that I think of it.

I don't know why people are orgasming over a composer list. I love music as much as the next person, but I don't really care for music in SSB. There could be no music whatsoever and I'd still enjoy the game, because the music is not as important here as it would be in a game involving storytelling and emotion.

Music's always important, even without storytelling....but I think the real reason people are interested in the composer list is that it's an interesting way of trying to figure out what characters might be making an appearance.

The fact that the list has Koji Kondo, Yoko Shimomura AND Yasunori Mitsuda, though, is pretty groovy. Imagine how much fun the musical director is having getting to direct those three! Probably an easy job, though. "You three--I dunno, just make something up, it'll be great."

Haha. Kondo/Shimomura/Mitsuda jam session.

My sentiments exactly!  And I'm a huge video game music affeccianado.  But, you know, that's the way video game hype works.  Five years from now, Square-Enix will announce a completely 4-D remake of Final Fantasy 8, and fans will go nuts because the company will confirm that the development team has hired the same janitors that they used the first time around.

I don't know what else to say other than that Super Smash Brothers will end up awesome as long as it is completely the same?

I disagree. Even if there is no coherent "story" or "plot," music plays a monumental role in setting the tone and emotion of a setting, or in Smash Bros.'s case, evoking nostalgic memories. It provides a dynamic and fitting backdrop to the game, and I can't imagine playing without it. It wouldn't be the same to battle on Onett without hearing the Earthbound theme, or to duke it out on Corneria without Starfox's theme, or to fight on Mushroom Kingdom II without the Super Mario Bros 2 theme, etc.

I do agree that seeing a list of composers doesn't really sate my extreme excitement about SSBB though!

Also is says planned for 2007 release, so hopefully we will see it before Christmas.

The soundtrack for this game is potentially shaping up to be all kinds of jawesome.  I was kind of expecting a bigger update than that, but apparently the blog is going to have updates on weekdays so hopefully more info comes through the channel.  Nice to see some in game screens though with the damage meters and all that and for a simple stage, the explanation on Battlefield simply with the day and night feature makes me kind of excited for what other stage exclusive events could be on other maps.

i think mateui means that music is good etc but SSB could be without music and it'd still be a good time because honestly who really DOES CARE about the music in the game.

it's not like this is an rpg and it needs mood setting for PUNCH BABBY PIKACHU.

What, I don't think SSB games would be as good without music...I mean yeah they'd still be fun but it would feel like something was missing.  Plus, the music is always really, really good.

On the other hand, I'm not going to be orgasming over a composer list either.  The music is important, but that is not the COOL NEW INFO I am looking for in game releases.

Will this be online? I am doubting it, and if not then nintendo really needs to get in touch!

I think they announced serious interest in making this an online game.

Also, the music list is most interesting because it hints at potential characters. Why is Yoko in there? Could it be that, possibly, Sora or even Rikku is in the game? Chain of Hearts was on the DS so the characters meet the requirements and Squeenix is currently in Nintendo's pants getting used to the view again...

I'd say Sora is a bloody strong contender. Shame he's such a total gimp, but roll with the punches. I see no other reason why Yoko would be on the list. Same with Mitsuda - I wouldn't bet against Crono showing up (once again, shame the DBZ/CT art is so atrocious (imho!)).
