I don't know what emo music is but I hate whiny stuff so you're safe to assume I haven't got any of that. also note that some people here hate indie music (music made for the purpose of being indie; the indie scene), but they still might have some good stuff to reccommend. I have a lot of independent music but I generally don't refer to it as such
von woofen mentioned Neutral Milk Hotel. I like NMH a lot, but some people really can't stand it! the Mountain Goats are somewhat similar to them, so if you find yourself unable to stand Magnum's vocals you should still like tMG
the Arcade Fire is good. but again, some people hate it. they use a lot of different instruments in their music including stuff like organs etc
I just started listening to Kings of Convenience recently, they've got some nice harmony
Feist is probably a bit different than what you're looking for (female vocals) but also very good
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah might be a bit more OUT THERE than you'd like to go, but I really like their stuff. they're definitely one of my favorite independent bands. Ounsworth's vocals are very... different, often described as nasally, but not whiny. they're definitely worth checking out if you haven't listened to them before! people hate this band too, almost always because of the vocals (I love 'em)
sufjan stevens might be too blatant emotional for you, check his stuff out anyway, particularly Michigan and Illinois.
the Flaming Lips are great. try to get the Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (this is the one everyone likes), and at War With the Mystics. out of all my suggestions, these guys are probably the ones you're most likely to enjoy
it has been a long time since I heard any jurassic 5, but if you like the Gorillaz you should definitely check out Deltron 3030. Del tha Funkee Homosapien is in a couple of the songs on the first gorillaz album. On Demon Days, there's De la Soul, Roots Manuva, MF DOOM, and Booty Brown of Pharcyde. check out all of them, plus maybe Dr. Octagon's first album. Also if you like the Gorillaz, look into Blur.
there's stuff I'm missing, but I stopped thinking about genres a long time ago so don't blame me. also, if you're planning on pirating a lot of this, don't use limewire or anything like that if you were planning on it. use torrents and a program like utorrent instead, or buy premium and use the zoo's ftp service.
