Not sure if this is the right section, but I've been out of the whole music scene for way too long with school kicking my ass the last few years and I don't even know what's out there and what's good anymore. I'd really like some suggestions for good, new music since I plan on buying an ipod soon to replace my cheap mp3 player.

I'm a big fan of indie, alternative, and rock, in that order. I can listen to hip-hop/rap, but only artists similar to Gorillaz and Jurassic 5. I don't like emo bands nor do I like artists that just scream throughout their songs. Here's what I used to listen to:

As you can tell, a lot of this stuff is outdated and like I said, I'm in serious need of some good, new music. Give me anything and everything you think I'd like that fits into the genres above. Hell, give me stuff you think I may even hate. I really, really, really need some new music.

Blues for the Red Sun by Kyuss

I've listened to samples on iTunes from all of the artists you guys suggested.

Kyuss is too heavy-rockish for my tastes. They do sound better than most heavy rock bands though. Thanks for the suggestion.
Kula Shaker sounds pretty good. S.O.S. caught my attention right away. I haven't really listened to the lyrics that much, but they do sound like the kind of band I'd be in to. I'll listen to more of their stuff when I catch up on homework and have some more free time.
Neautral Milk Hotel is okay. They didn't really grab my attention the first time, but they seem like they may be the kind of band that I have to actually listen to a few times before I start to like them, like I did with Bloc Party and The Strokes.
The Mountain Goats are pretty good. From what I've heard, I do like them. The singer's voice is pretty strange, but the music still sounds pretty cool. I really liked Lion's Teeth.
Arcade Fire is probably the closest to my taste in music (along with Kings of Convenience) from the few songs of their I've heard. I'll definitely look into more of their stuff.
Like I said, Kings of Convenience sound good. It's funny because I had some of their music on my iTunes (got them from a friend) but I've never listened to them before.
I like Feist a lot so far. I've always wondered who sang 1234 from the iPod commercials. I'm usually not a fan of female vocals from some reason (well, modern day stuff anyways) but Feist seems like an exception.
Believe it or not, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah was one of my favorite suggestions posted. I liked most of the stuff I heard. Most of the other artists only had a few songs that grabbed my attention.
I liked a few songs by Sufjan Stevens. I don't think I'll end up getting a whole album by him, but a few songs on there sound pretty good.
The Flaming Lips are good. You were right about Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. I liked that song a lot as well as a few other songs by them. I couldn't find At War With the Mystics though.
Couldn't find anything by Deltron 3030 on iTunes.
Dr. Octagon does remind me of Gorillaz and could definitely end up being a band I'd be in to. I'd have to listen to a few more songs before coming to a conclusion.
I loved all of the stuff I heard by Blur. Very close to my style of music. Great suggestion.

I'm glad to even be looking into new music. It feels good to try listening to something other than the same old stuff I've had for years. And no, I'm not going to pirate it. I'll probably end up spending cash on iTunes if I do end up getting an iPod.

If you like Queens of the Stoneage, you should probably give Kyuss another listen... They do a lot of collaboration albums together.

Anyway, similar to your tastes... try Depeche Mode, White Stripes, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, The Bastard Fairies, The Postal Service, Jason Mraz, Muse, White Rabbits, Metric, and Travis.

Alright, first the stuff I've already heard before making this thread:

The Killers - They're okay. My girlfriend's in love with them (their older stuff anyways). I like a few of their songs, but the rest all sound the same to me.
Band of Horses - Too mellow for my tastes.
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Alright band. My girlfriend likes a few of their stuff as well, which is how I've heard of them. Not a fan, really.
Depeche Mode - Used to listen to some of their stuff a while ago, but not so much lately.
White Stripes - I like a few of their songs a lot, but the rest of it is pretty meh. I do need to get some more of their music though. Thanks for the reminder.
Muse - Never really been a fan, although there is a song or two that I like by them.

And now the stuff I've never heard of before that I didn't really like:

The Unicorns - Don't know why, but I'm just not a fan.
My Morning Jacket - Same as the Unicorns. They're decent, but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy any of their stuff.
Bastard Fairies - Weird band (from what I heard anyways). I couldn't get into it.
Metric - Just wasn't a fan.

And the new stuff that I liked:
The Rapture - Very good suggestion. This is the kind of stuff I'm into.
Architecture in Helsinki - Another good suggestion. The stuff I listened to I liked a lot. I'll be sure to get some more of their music.
Belle and Sebastian - Step into My Office Baby is a great song. The music video for it is pretty cool as well. I'm gonna download some of their stuff.
White Rabbits - Kid on My Shoulders and Navy Wives are pretty good. I only listened to a few of their songs, so while I may not get the whole album, I'll get some songs.
Travis - I only liked Selfish Jean. I saw the music video on youtube (the one by Demitri Martin) and I liked the song a lot. Didn't listen to much else though.
The Format - Another great suggestion and one of my favorites. She Doesn't Get It and Dog Problems are both really good. I need to listen to some more of their stuff though.

Meanwhile, I've been doing some searching on my own and I found a lot of bands (or a few songs of those bands) I liked including:

Silversun Pickups (Lazy Eye only so far...haven't heard much else)
Wolfmother (Woman I like...not sure about anything else)
Klaxons (they're okay. Each time I listen to them I like them less and less though)

Tokyo Police Club (need to listen to more of their music to see what I really like)

The Fratellis (I love every song I've heard by them so far)

Gnarls Barkley (don't know why, but their music is very catch)
Louis XIV (only like a few songs by them...almost every song is about the same subject though)

The Mars Volta

I think that might be a little out of what he asked for, I wouldn't really consider TMV indie, alternative, maybe a little bit rock. He might like the Tremulant EP (and possibly De-Loused) idk, i guess. But it just seems like a bit of a stretch from what he asked for.

Try listening to the Kaiser chiefs, the Vines, or The Go.

Yeah, I already listen to the Vines and I'm a big fan. I like the Kaiser Chiefs, but I don't have any of their music. I've been meaning to steal it from my girlfriend but I keep forgetting to do it. Not sure about The Go though. They sound meh.

I've been meaning to listen to the Mars Volta for a long ass time now. A friend of mine is in love with them and I've heard a few songs that I liked. A lot of it seems like it's not my style, but they do have some good music I'd be willing to download.
