This is almost a nightmare for me. I am a pretty big fan of the Alice in Wonderland Book and yeah, I even liked the Disney cartoon version, but now NEWS IS ABOUT that Tim Burton is going to be directing Alice in Wonderland 3D that will take a Beowulf approach to live action/special fx shit. I don't really know what to say.

It can’t have bypassed executives at Disney that Tim Burton’s re-released The Nightmare Before Christmas has been a box office smash, out-earning several new releases in terms of per-screen average (one of those lovely technical financial terms that box office analysts love).

So it makes sense that they’d want to stay in the Burton business. Once he’s trimmed Sweeney Todd to his usual exacting standards, Burton will start work early next year on Alice In Wonderland, which will take a Beowulf-flavoured approach, albeit mixing performance-captured work with live action material. And, like that heroic epic, it’ll arrive in shiny 3D.

The script, which Linda Woolverton has finished, will use Lewis Carroll’s book as its source.

Once that’s done, Burton will re-visit one of his most famous short films, Frankenweenie. The cult classic – which ironically saw him fired from Disney the first time as the studio thought he was wasting their resources making films that were too scary for kids – is a loving pastiche of Frankenstein, in which young lad Victor’s beloved dog is killed and then re-animated.

Burton’s long wanted to do a feature-length version, and now he’ll turn the story into stop-motion to be made the same way as Nightmare, with a digital 3D release. "Tim is one of the most dynamic and creative storytellers of our time and having him back at Disney is just great," blabbered Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook to Variety. Just don’t fire him this time, eh?

I didn't watch Nightmare before Christmas 3D because I didn't really like the orignal, but why do people want to re-hash things like this. He's bound to turn it into some goth-fest like that American McGee bullshit and it will end up being a shitty movie pimped out by 3D effects and everyone will call Tim Burton a genius because he is a quite goth guy who makes DARK DEEP MOVIES.

I admit, Tim Burton's recent movies have been piss (yes, even Corpse Bride), but he does have a style that would suit this. I look foerward to seeing it.

I've hated nearly all of Burton's work ever since Hot Topic first opened but this is just too much. Lewis Carroll's work is one of the last untouched areas of moody storytelling that Burton has yet to defile.

seems like a good fit imo.

if someone doesn't see a dark side to Alice in Wonderland, do they really know anything about the story at all. but it is true that a lot of burton's recent stuff has been shit, and if charlie and the chocolate factory is any indication, this won't be that great either. chocolate factory was alright for what it was and supposedly closer to the book, but the first movie is still so much better.

Unlike Charlie and the Chocolate Factory though, Alice in Wonderland has been put to film many, many times . I don't see this upcoming incarnation ruining or displacing "the original" to any extent. I think it'll be an interesting take on the story, and actually I'm kind of looking forward to it! hot topic and mall goths etc are disgusting and unfortunate but I'm not going to let that shit determine my movie taste

There's a difference between seeing a dark side and complaining about Tim Burton's gothic take on everything in the world. There is a difference between seeing a dark side and pulling that American McGee shit that American McGee did.

I think this is actually one of the things Burton is more suited to do. Alice in Wonderland was a pretty macabre story to begin with (bound to happen when you are writing on opium) and I think a lot of people are just hating on him because of his pseudo-popularity. Nerdo even said that he only hated Burton AFTER Hot Topic opened. Seriously there is almost no credential to Burton-hating besides like "lol goths are shit."

I want to see what he does with the Cheshire Cat and/or the Mad Hatter.

hey man i liked alice, it was a fun game to play and an interesting direction to take through the looking glass in

i mean yeah mcgee is an egotistical idiot and i hate him but the game was cool

but yeah on topic i dont see the big deal. alice in wonderland has been made into a film about 6000 times. burton's will just be another one on the pile that i'll probably never see.

Though looking, especially at a story like Big Fish (a recen Burton favorite of mine) the style that was made in would probably be pretty good for an Alice movie. What I'm not too sure about is the 3d style. I haven't seen Beowulf yet but the trailers don't impress me one bit, they just look too fake. It's not as stylish as cartoonish 3d and it's not as good as real life combined with cgi elements.

If they're going the realistic approach I'm kinda worried about how it will look. Especially since it's such a fantastical story. I hope they do something interesting though, perhaps combining the elements to make it really nice and lovely. A motion-capture 3d movie with the colour scheme of the old Disney Alice and the weirdness of Burton could be pretty interesting.

I agree. I think a more classical Burton style (eg Night Before Christmas claymation stuff) would be much better suited for the film than live action. Alice in Wonderland has never really come across as anything that could be pulled off well with real people, but I guess we will see!

I don't see why it's a problem that a lot of Burton's work has heavy gothic influence. like I said, it's a pretty good fit in this case? actually I can't think of any Burton film adaptation that innacurately uses gothic themes.

tbh I find it pretty gross how widely such a small part of popular culture has defined people's tastes.

I actually think it is a pretty bad fit. But that's just a case of personal preference before you pull out the "You just don't understand the book" routine, It is my favourite book, I've read it 16+ times and I studied it for nearly a full year in college. It means a lot to me and although yeah the film has been made already a shitload of times and they were all pretty shit, this is something that is actually pretty personal to me and it upsets me when people want to take their own creative license on something that I have such a vivid image of.

So aside from the fact the film has been made badly before, it's going to upset me again when it's made again and someone pulls the whole YEAH ALICE IN WONDERLAND IS A GOTHIC STORY IT HAS DEEP DARK SUBPLOTS THAT YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW ABOUT BUT I UNDERSTAND. I would personally prefer it if everyone just left it alone.

Meh, I like Tim Burton's movies and I liked American Mcgee's version of Alice (which btw, I heard he got rights to make a movie on too). So this sounds like a good thing from my standpoint.

Isn't the book public domain by now? At this point, whether it's your favorite book or not, you've really got no reason to complain about adaptations being made. Let people take the interpretations they want. The audience's interpretation is more important than the writer's to begin with.

It'd be like complaining about Wicked because it interpreted the Wizard of Oz all wrong. Who cares? That's what derivative works are supposed to do. We've already seen/read Carrol's interpretation. Let Burton have his.

I'm looking forward to this. I liked all Alice in wonderland adaptions so far, and i like where phantasmagoria
is going, so I'll be looking forward to this. I'm not exactly a big fan of Burton's, but I appreciate what he does.

I'll watch this anyway.
