So last night I spent the night at my girlfriend's room... and apparently while I was gone someone was very busy attempting to burn down our dorm room.

My roommate (Derek) returned at around 2-3 (he doesn't remember), many hours after anyone we know of had been in our dorm. The other roommate (Joe) was asleep and had been since around 12.

I didn't get home until 3 PM today (drunksleep!!). Derek informs me that when he entered the kitchen, he found that someone had put our pack of hot dogs - plastic wrapping and all - and set it to the highest possible heat setting and also the longest possible time (99 minutes). When he got back to the room there was 84 minutes left on the timer and the hot dogs were smoking. Thanks to our heat sensors (not smoke detectors) no alarms had gone off.

I'm really not sure if it was a drunk or something or whether someone wants to destroy our apartment. I think there are many people who have it out for Derek. I certainly didn't piss anyone off to the point of trying to destroy our dorm room. We agreed not to call the police (there is not a lot they could do) but I am kind of curious as to whether they will try again or use another tactic. If they really wanted to burn down the room they could have lit up the hot plate so I think it was much more likely a drunk than on purpose but who knows!

or they could have just poured gas everywhere and set the place on fire.  plastic doesn't burn and i don't see a pack of hot dogs as the catalyst for a room destroying fire but whatever.

we are almost entirely sure that if someone was really trying to burn down my room it was to get at Derek. there is certainly no one that hates me that much (honestly I do not think there is anyone at NCF who hates me at all) and my other roommate is probably one of the nicest people i know!

yes and we have found the culprit is none other than professor plum in the kitchen with the microwave

derek seems pretty convinced it was on purpose because he has pissed off a lot of people lately. genuinely i think it was more likely a drunk guy than a prank because what the hell kind of stupid prank is that?

it was pretty close to catching on fire. it was smoking and there were embers in the hot dogs. also the plastic wrapper had melted and now i think we have to ditch the microwave because there's no way we can get the melted plastic out.

No, I am pretty sure it was a drunk (I thought I indicated that). Derek is convinced that it was an arson attempt.

Either way I am just pissed about the microwave.

I dunno, I'm a nice person but I piss a lot guys on my campus off when they see me trying to get their girls of interest numbers and when I do they try to make fun of me, If I lived in the dorms I'm pretty sure I would be dead/anal rape.

also, I don't if the original poster of this topic is white, but what is up with white people and wierd ass pranks? Like I remember this one time this kid came to class and said "we played the sweetest prank on billy the other night dude!" I said "Oh, what was it?" ...then he said "He was piss drunk and passed out so we shaved his balls!"

I was in shock and never went to another high school party involving young white men.

The hot dogs would eventually blow up in the microwave, not catch fire (I have never had anything catch fire in a microwave, ever, as that is not how microwaves work). If there was any smoke it was probably from the plastic as it melted into the air (mmm acrid smoke) but the hotdogs would have just went "sploot" all over the inside of the microwave. Microwaves work by heating the water inside of something and then bounding back and diffusing, so I am fairly certain you would have been fine.

Of course, I am no scientician so I honestly can't say for sure, but I sincerely doubt that your dorm room would have burned down because of some hot dogs in a microwave.

plastic can catch fire in a microwave.
