Lets share awesome hiphop: Music Totw

As thecatamites mentioned in his Proto-Punk topic, I'm trying to get a series of weekly topics together to de-shitify this forum. (If you are interested send me a p )

And before you read anymore yeah this is about hiphop so if you dont like it feel free to click that little red box in the corner :D

This topic was going to be about classic hiphop but then I decided to talk about some current awesome hiphop songs and some of my favourite all time artists.
And yeah of course I missed alot of songs but it's a big genre and just my opinion!
If you have any favourites which are good feel free to share.

Firstly Krs-One.

He's known to be one of the founding fathers of hiphop and one of the key voices in keeping lyricism alive. A very well respected MC, you'll never see Krs-One selling out.

I like this song not only for the video but also for the really good lyrics:

Nas!

Well Nas has an album called Nigger coming out in the next few months and he also wrote one of the best hiphop albums ever when he was just in his teens.
Lyricially he's amazing, most of his albums only suffer from some boring beats but I think he kinda fixed that on Hip Hop is Dead.

This features some classic artists and even Kanye is on point. Listen to the Nas acapella.

If you know anything about your hiphop you'll also be suprised to notice the appearance of Rakim. Everybody loves Rakim, even Ghostface Killah stated
Quote
I am better than everybody, except Rakim
haha and he hates everybody!
Nas named himself Gods Son after Rakim who is nicknamed the God.

The Notorious BIG

In my opinion the best rapper of all time. Definately my favourite anyway. Ready to Die is a classic album and Biggie sounds really passionate, its hard to believe he freestyled alot of this album.

This is some gangsta shit but also really cool to listen to. Every line is memorable and witty.

Quote
Ladies, my Mercedes
Hold four in the back two if you fat

I also uploaded this song for you guys. Its my fave: http://rapidshare.com/files/108356256/Notorious_B.I.G_-_Nasty_Boy_Rmx.mp3.html

Well I think thats enough for now, next week we are covering Wu Tang, Outkast, UGK and Blackalicious.

:)

I know this whole song by heart and man it is fun to listen to! I bolded my favourite bits in the lyrics:

I have never been a really big fan of hip-hop. I guess it's mostly because of all the mainstream shit that is out there. It's probably skewed my image of what hip-hop music is. I can't deny the that the three rappers you have up there are good musicians.  I would say Nas's song is probably my favourite out of those three you posted, it seems more emotional to me. I dunno though, maybe I will have to start listening to more of this hip-hop stuff!

I really liked Krs-One and Nas, the other two not so much. Then again, I know why I didn't like Biggie (I don't like gangsta rap). I was wondering however, if you could recommend me some stuff along the lines of Pete Rock & CL Smooth (literally the hip-hop I listen to). I've wanted to get more into it, its just mainly around here the only thing that really gets past around is gangsta rap, so I've never been exposed to any other form of hip-hop except gangsta rap with the exception of what I find on the internet. But yeah, Krs-One sounds pretty awesome, any recs on an album to check out?

Um you might like: De La Soul, Lootpack,Cunningliguists and A tribe called quest.

I always hear people saying the best Krs album is Return Of The Boom Bap or Criminially minded.

I don't usually listen to hip-hop (well, except for Public Enemy), but that Nas song was pretty awesome... I dunno, I guess I like it when rappers have a really good backing track as well as good lyrics, because if it's just this really minimal drumbeat going on and on then I'll lose interest pretty quick.

I don't get it. Are we allowed do discuss other artists, or do we have to stick with those posted?

I already love them all. Nas is my personal favorite. The only records by him I don't really like are Nastradamus and God's Son.

Okay, cool. Here goes.

Black Star

The infamous duo of Mos Def and Talib Kweli. Black Star is probably my second favorite hip-hop album ever. Talib is one of the best lyricists I've ever heard. Mos Def is a just plain fun guy. It's a little sad that they don't really make records together anymore.

Best Lyrics IMO:

Their Best Video and Some Solo Videos:

Common

There isn't much out there that can stand up to "I Used to Love H.E.R." Everything he puts out just bleeds quality.

In 2002, Pun's widow, Liza Rios, released a documentary about her late husband, Still Not a Player. The film features commentary from many of Pun's close friends and family members, details the struggles with his weight, and also reveals how at times, Pun would become physically abusive with his wife - in one scene, he is caught on camera while pistol whipping her.[

I'm not the biggest Pun fan, lyricially he is good and I am trying to listen to more to appreciate him but theres something about his voice and his style which just doesn't quite 'click' with me.

pun pretty much popularized the style of breathing on record but now everyone has latched on it not realizing he did it from time restrictions.

Afura-  I don't think anyone can deny "dead in the middle of Little Italy little did we know that we riddled two middle-men who didn't do diddly" though. Pun was really ahead of his time.

aboutasoandthis - I couldn't check those Blackstar videos but did you put Respiration up? God that song is amazing.

I'm looking forward to your Outkast thing, they're my favourite group and I think a lot of music fans would benefit from a proper run down on their best stuff (ATLiens/Aquemini/Stankonia) rather than just Hey Ya.

I was wondering however, if you could recommend me some stuff along the lines of Pete Rock & CL Smooth (literally the hip-hop I listen to).

Afura's recommendations are pretty much exactly what I'd say. If you want some modern non-gangsta stuff try Little Brother, or Murs.

Here's some of my favourite artists that haven't been mentioned:

Cage

While his older stuff can be a bit hard to get into, I think every hip-hop fan should hear Hell's Winter. While some people didn't dig the transition from angry drug inspired music to honest, mature music I think he's really grown into an incredible artist and lyrically he's one of the best alive.

Pharoahe Monch

A bit old school, a bit boom bap and a bit new school - but mostly I love Pharoahe because he's so unique. He flows off beat, says some ridiculous lines (although not as bad as Canibus can be, thankfully) and is really hard to predict in terms of releasing albums, but he's still one of the best rappers alive today. His manic flow combined with his commanding voice make him a presence to really appreciate on any track. His first release (Internal Affairs) is my favourite of his, but his new album (Desire) is just as worthy. Check out The Truth with Talib Kweli and Common to see his depth, or his most famous track Simon Says to see how he gets the crowd going.

Atmosphere

Atmosphere probably get more recognition from the indie crowd than the hip hop crowd, but I believe they're a fantastic group. Ant provides some of the best backdrops in modern hip hop while Slug laments about life, women and alcohol. They make some of the most relevant music to the average person, and although they're not perfect I think they've done some amazing music and deserve all the success they're having.
