So, after hearing my mom talk about school prayer, I want to make a topic about it. She says that she is for it, and that those that do not want to do it "Don't have to open their mouths". She was referring to Marilyn O' Hair, and what type of person she is. As for me, I would rather it not be.  I am going to say "No". I mean, it doesn't really bother me a lot, but I believe that it would be ideal if schools were left religously neutral.

This basically.

I'm pretty sure you are allowed to pray in school if you want, they just can't set aside a special time for prayer.

no one cares if you silently pray to yourself during school.

the only people who give a shit are the idiotic religious right who want to slowly add in school run prayer services

No because I'm against enforcing religion and yes because I like the idea of a moment dedicated to doing nothing

Basically what ryan said

Except with that we need to HOLD THE SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE imo public schools count as state and we don't need the fucking church in it I'm alright with exposing kids to religion as a sort of historic criteria or something like that but I don't want my kids feeling alienated when all these other little fuckers are surrounded around a flagpole everyday praying to jeesus chriits

Prayer should be allowed in school, but it should not be mandatory.  It should be up to the individual whether they want to pray or not.

A time should not be set aside specifically for prayer, but free time, or time between classes should be fine if a student, or group of students wishes to pray.

A quick silent prayer before a test or lunch is fine.

Basically, prayer should not affect those who do not wish to pray.

I'm a primitive theo and I am still against structured prayer. Especially if it involves people who don't believe in the same things as I do.

I certainly think it should be allowed, but not enforced. Even Jesus spoke against the almagation of church and state in regards to Caesars policies.

School sponsered prayer... hell no. People should be allowed to do whatever silly rituals they want though - granted it's not disruptive.

When I was at first and middle schools, this was compulsary, every day in assembely. If you didn't take part, they'd call you out infront of like 300-600 other kids. Naturally I am totally against this shit

I never thought Ben Stein would be someone I'd end up hating.  He seemed so harmless.  I mean, he's still harmless because nobody cares about what he does, so I don't know.

Back when I went to middle school, around the time I still went to church every Sunday, I had to go to this bible school.  It was kind of cool because we went on trips to fun places, but we had to do all these stupid prayer things when I just wanted to go to the playground.  Anyway, one time we had to go to my middle school campus and go from classroom to classroom for these mini-class things.  I was fucking bored out of my mind, so I made the decision to ditch my teacher and run around the school for a while.

They sent out people to find me, but I was pretty good at keeping hidden.  One time a lady saw me at the end of the hallway, and yelled something, but I just bolted down another way and she never found me.

But during the classes, I remember one of the "teachers" telling me that I had to participate or else it would affect my real school grades.  I knew that was bullshit, but I was pissed that they would threaten to harm my academic career just because I didn't believe Jesus was our savior.

The problem is where do you draw the line?  It was ridiculous that students were able to leave class to attend prayer sessions around the flagpole at my school.  At what point do you say "no, you can't pray because you have to go to class"?

School prayer is fine so long as it does not impede upon the students' learning, or subject them to physical or emotional harm. My high school has various religious clubs that meet during lunch; and that is completely alright with the school administration. It's not like the Islamic and the Christian clubs have a crusade in the middle of the frigging campus. As long as these clubs remain non-exclusive and anyone is safe to join them, this is completely fine.

Get rid of them, and you might as well get rid of the Fil-Am club, or the Black Engineers of America club, or any club for that matter. (Of course, Future Lawyers of America is always full to the brim with smarmy asswipes and should totally be cut out because they are horribly snide and exclusive).

Obviously, the line is drawn when they leave class to go pray. You simply cannot do that.
1. Prayer at that point may only serve as a means to get out of class.
2. This is completely disruptive.
3. I don't think anyone's God will throw a bitch fit if you opt to set aside time for learning integrals of inverse trig functions over prayer.

Of course, I am always fond of the quote:
"As long as there are tests, there will always be Prayer in school."
"I would be totally embarassed to write this, even as a fakepost. it's not funny except in how you seem to think it's good. look at all the redundancies, for fuck's sake. "insipid semantics, despicable mediocrity" ugh gross gross. I want to take a shower every time I read your prose." -Steel

The point where it becomes disruptive of their education, and that of others.
