then yes watch monster because it's baller and very NON-ANIME but not fma if you do not want WACKY ANIME ACTION *falls down* baaaaaka ><.  i really think it is like the worst of the bones series from that time period!  i haven't seen scrapped princess in like FOUR YEARS so idk if it was as good as i remember it being, and the same goes for rahxephon, but wolf's rain is probably still pretty cool, even in retrospect.  also planetes because HARD SCIFI isn't really something you see a lot in anime.

and not escaflowne if this does not appeal to you:

I thought FMA was cookie cutter nonsense...that is, until I actually watched it. It's not. Have you seen it? It actually gets intense and dramatic pretty often. So you don't like it...okay...but to say it's just another generic anime is untrue.

And Escaflowne is a romance show with some great mecha action. What's your point? That doesn't make it bad.

Weeeell, it does a little for me, I've always hated mechs or at least thought the whole idea was kind of childish and silly. I've heard full metal alchemist is pretty good from people I sort of trust in real life though but that Escaflowne looks really awful I'm afraid. Romance in anime always seems to be some eager but breathless girl flirting with some guy who cluelessly doesn't even get what's going on (or is too involved in his mech-fighting career that he doesn't care) and she never gives up hope. Either that or idiot guy trying to get with girl who doesn't seem interested but strings him along for twenty six episodes "maybe you'll get some next episode kyuzo-kun~ *kyuzo falls over*." Add great mecha action onto that and I'm totally out, not that I don't appreciate the suggestion

nah i saw the whole thing.  the premise is sort of cool but i didn't really find it to be anything more than a relatively unexceptional action/adventure anime.  it's a step above stuff like NARUTO for sure and it's more plot-driven, but i never thought it was exceedingly well done or anything; most of the characters are pretty one-dimensional, for example.  and it's plagued by A LOT of the stupid shit you see in anime that really just grates on you (the falling down, the don't call me short, the comedy that absolutely does not transcend culture, etc).  it's okay for what it is and i guess if mark is a fan of that type of shit he might like it but i thought.... i thought he was different

Well to each his own, I suppose. As for FMA, I thought the series had nice characters and told a good story. The comedy segments that you listed, I thought were well-placed to lighten up the mood and personally found them hilarious. But I don't get what you mean by "that kind of stuff." There's more to this series than just the comedy.

I'll second third fourth agree about FMA. It's got a pretty good storyline, great characters and decent graphics. Sure, sometimes it's a bit 'funny' but the overall story is really good. It even made me cry a few times. ;.;

I'm currently reading the manga for Gantz and I can only imagine just how bloody the anime version of it would be! Go~ry. >.<

Witch Hunter Robin was okay, in my opinion, though others may not agree. Pretty dark in some aspects. About a group that hunts 'witches'.

I liked Twelve Kingdoms, despite my copy being in terrible subbed engrish.

You could try.. I don't know, Black Jack. It was just a really generic anime about a doctor who practiced medicine illegally. It had some really interesting animation (looked like an old "cops and robbers" sort of cartoon from the 50's).

I never finished watching it (because I didn't have the full series), but it managed to hold together really well for being so generic. No special powers, no weird animals or monsters. Just a doctor and a kid who lived with him.

Quote
Most of the episodes involve Black Jack doing some good deed, for which he rarely gets recognition—often curing the poor and destitute for free, or teaching a capitalist fat cat and his pompous colleagues a lesson in humility. They frequently end with a good, humane person enduring hardship, often unavoidable death, to save others.

mark I'm seconding the recommendation you not waste your time on FMA (pretty long for an almost zero payoff (HITLER was pretty good though)) and also recommending Paranoia Agent and Monster (if you have the time). Paranoia Agent is probably the single best anime series that ever came out!

if you want just some little garbage stuff to watch, check out Berserk, which I always thought was kind of over the top (gayrape...monsterrape...) but has one of the best endings ever (even if it was unintentional).

You are weird. Berserk is one of the greatest anime ever. Those 24 (or was it 25?) episodes was the greatest experience I had watching anime. I skipped school and watched the whole thing in two days, I think. You are seriously the first person I ran into that didn't like it, not to mention call it garbage.

Yeah, I agree with Black Jack being...somewhat generic. But still good, you should give it a try. It's the only one of Tezuka's works that I managed to like.

i watched mindgame today and it put me in a really good mood. that was a great movie, i'm definitely gonna watch it again probably real soon. also paranoia agent is interesting and has some good music as well. i still need to watch the last episode of that, i kind of lost track for some reason i guess i just haven't been in the mood for anime programming.

these two are the only animes i've ever seen which i could say i actually liked on more than a superficial level.

it's just kind of not good at a lot of parts and goes way too over the top with VIOLENCE RAPE etc. and then there's the fact it looks really dated, and not in a trigun way, but in a "full of frozen frames of actions" way.

I didn't think this was a weird opinion to have, but yeah Berserk's one of the better generic fantasy violence anime, probably because it's so dark or whatever.

me too! i loved it. probably the weirdest movie i've ever seen. was so intense. Most of all, I just really loved this director's style. Has anyone read the manga this is based on? Is it any good?

So yeah, I guess I will have to start listening to the recommendations in here. The only other Japanese animation thing I had ever watched was an episode of Monster, which was really good. I think I'm going to find Paranoia Agent or Monster next.

ahaha nice spoiler man.  i've never seen anyone do that!

but yeah mindgame is so good.  it is very uh, idk, LIFE AFFIRMING or something.  it made me want to go out and do all the shit i wanted to do but didn't because i was too caught up on a bunch of other stupid stuff.  what i liked most about the escaping the whale part was just the montage of POSSIBILITIES they threw at you, and also i kind of liked how the entire thing just

wow i am such an idiot. fixed

The only complaint I have is that some of the quick alternative endings/flashing scenes were a little too quick for me and I wanted to go back and watch it in slow motion because all of it was so creative and just ATTENTION-GRABBING
