I wish instead of making this a stupid action game they actually portrayed a feeling of hopelessness instead of "oh snap zombies lucky I have all these guns to kill em!". I wonder what the new silent hill will be like, probally much better.

ok but

its set in africa, which is pretty much ALL BLACK PEOPLE

and

they're zombies which pretty much ACT LIKE ANIMALS and require their heads blown off to perish

soooooo

edit: i'm not saying its not racist or whatever, I'm just saying its PRETTY FEASIBLE. if the zombie apoc happened, some white guy in africa is probably going to be killing animalistic (because being zombieee) black people by shooting them in the head. and same for everywhere else. i don't think its racism, I think it's just the way it comes off, yet this is kinda how the genre itself is and such.

I completely agree with you here.

I liked RE4, and if this shares the same gameplay I'm sure I'll like it just as much. I agree the old RE games had horrible controls, and the over the shoulder really made things intense. I just wish there were more parts in RE4 with shittons of zombies like it's Mercenary Mode. It looks like this may accomplish that.

And the zombies in RE4 ran, they just slowed down when they got close to you. I think it will be cool if they're faster, it seemed like easy mode getting head shots on something moving that slow. BTW, it's nice that you already think this is a RE4 clone based on those four TOTALLY GAME CHANGING ASPECTS of RE5.

i uh, i don't think this is true!

ehhhh I dont know if they DELIBERATELY were insensitive. just seems like Japan as a whole has a huge bubble of cultural insensitivity (from what I've seen of their programming and stuff).

I seriously think they released that trailer and not a single person said "wait do we really want a white man's burden thing going here and maybe we should be careful releasing a game that with a few subtle changes would be propoganda for the KKK" not because they knew and were afraid (or proud) but because the question probably didn't occur.

not that incredible levels of social ignorance is much better than being like FUCK BLACKS but yeah.

pretty much all of my opinions on this games settings and characters have been mentioned already but really this is a common practice in the mass media.  it is not at the very least a little disconcerting that every game (every game) set in a country involves you playing as a minority character?  i'll even bring up resident evil 4 on this because Leon was a government agent but guess what?  the government of any country isn't going to send a fucking cop/secret agent into an area where he's a minority.  that's like al-qaeda sending a spy into jerusalem with a full beard and white kufi and dashiki.  it kind of brings unwanted attention to yourself when you're the odd man out.

really, this boils down to realism or at least the suspension of disbelief but it's clear that capcom looooves reusing old characters so instead of making you play as a local african they bring back chris redfield WHITEMAN VS. THE WORLD.  watching some of these videos reminds me of Tintin in the Congo where he blows up a fucking rhino by sticking dynamite in its ass and educating gollywog black kids about the superiority of europe.  i can secretly imagine that the parasite in this game is an evolved form of aids or something

This game doesn't really sound racist to me (and I'm half black).
I mean it's a zombie game in Africa... what race of people do you think the zombie's are gonna be?
And yeah there are alot of people of other races in Africa but from my understanding this is a remote African village or something so yeah it would be mostly black (but I'm 100% sure this game will have a 2nd half that happens in a way more boring setting like a lab or something which is a good chance to change up the races alittle). And to the people who are saying that he's "massacring african villagers" I'm pretty sure that's not what the game is about at all, it's about killing AFRICAN ZOMBIES the same way RE4 was about killing SPANISH (the race of my other half btw) ZOMBIES. Do you really think that if Chris met a NORMAL AFRICAN in the village who wasn't zombified he'd just say "Damn nigger" and blow his head off? I don't think so. These things aren't human anymore, the color of their skin doesn't change that fact. You know now that I think about it I actually find it racist that so few games happen in Africa just because no one wants to run into problems like this. Africa is a prime setting for a game.

Why is the hero in this some jacked up american army type anyway? That doesn't make for good zombie game.

It needs to be a person who LIVES IN THE PLACE trying to survive when the shit hits the fan, just like any zombie movie. This is why 28 weeks later is worse than 28 days later.
Yeah I pretty much agree with you except for the sentence I took out (lol)
This is probably why I've always liked Silent Hill which usually stars normalish people more than RE which usually stars well um... S.T.A.R.S. military people.
A zombie outbreak from the perspective of an African guy (sorta like that guy in Blood Diamond) would be unique and refreshing (not to mention it probably wouldn't seem as racist to people anymore).
Actually why the hell does this game star Chris anyway? Billy from RE0 actually makes more sense because of his past there.

that's really not the point though. I mean, let's ignore plotline issues, like a government secret agent being sent into Africa while clearly not blending in or of an entire village just full of CRAZY BLACK FOLK or any of that stuff.

the thing is, on first glance, this really LOOKED VERY BAD. I mean, you've got a white dude coming in portrayed as saving a bunch of apelike Africans who want to club him on the head. take out the little subtitles and you've got a scene that just looks deliberately like a race war.

of course that's not intentional, but that's not the point. other movies and mediums don't have this kind of problem because, well, they've reached the basic understanding that releasing a trailer of whitey killing darky is fairly discomfiting. but videogames, being made by some of the least aware people on the planet, haven't quite reached that basic level of understanding!

the game isn't racist, and the chances that it was intended to be racist or racially insensitive are almost zero, but let's face it, there's a very real context to see it in and you don't have to stretch at all to reach it! these kinds of things really shouldn't be an issue and are indicative of a larger problem in gamemaking as a whole though.

Haha yeah I have to agree with you. I remember once I saw this movie (I think it was an old Steven Seagal movie) where the hero was killing almost exclusively black people. Sure they were drug dealers who had turned the city into a dump but man that whole movie just felt akward and i'm pretty sure if anyone had come in the room they would have thought it was a KKK recruitment film or something (especially since it was like 99% shooting black people with the amount of story you'd expect from a Seagal film).

Anyway like I said before this game would probably go over better if it starred an African lead.

Marked for Death which I admit was one of the most uncomfortable action films I've seen.  Steven Seagal goes on a crusade killing every Jamaican druglord in the world by decapitating them with katanas and shit and it was just really really weird because no one bothers to hunt down the only white guy walking around outside the tourist resorts.

This is how I felt about RE4 and will end up thinking about RE5.  The two Spanish cops at the beginning joked about Leon being in the heart of Spain and I wouldn't be surprised if Chris has a black guide who's like "You're investigating crime in a secluded African village?  What are you, batshit insane?"

This may be of some interest to people (If you haven't seen it) Yahtzee does a quick review of 'a RE5 trailer' back in 15 Aug 2007? wtf?

I would have really liked to have seen this happen, I wonder how Capcom would have handled though?

Even the dog he shoots is black

to be honest though it looks like they made the place more multiethnic, like at 0:54 I see mexican looking guy, asian looking dude and like three guys who look pale and blonde (the one who's attacking him)

not that it helps much but it seems like they're aware it looks bad

Edit: Oh right I was watching the Japanese trailer to see if there was extra stuff or anything (or phonetic racial slurs in katakana etc.)

as long as the wheelchairs are decked out with spikes and machine guns.  you can't have crippled people in video games without making them intentionally badass.

...

...i would ENDORSE an action game where you played as a guy bound to a wheelchair that had spikes and guns on it...

Yeah I was just saying it seems like they did actually try to do something about it even if it's stupid and doesn't really make up for things (but maybe they just designed more character models too and it has nothing to do with anything)

I thought that's what Killer 7 was

Also there is interview with producer I have no sound but I'm sure it'll be revealing in some way so somebody watch it

Have 2 great series with 18 or so great games... then ruining it with all of the shitty spinoffs? Not quite. RE got ruined much MUCH earlier than in Megaman.

But then again LOLZOMBIESRAWR never interested me so I never played these games.

as far as i'm concerned, dead rising was the best direction i've seen the "zombie games" go but that game was pretty off the wall.  if a future game could capture the feeling of helplessness and overwhelming odds with more realism (because ripping out spines and sumoplexing zombies isn't exactly what i call realistic) then i think it would be a bold new move for survival horror as a genre.

I agree with Ax_Dude it is basically Resident Evil 4 in Africa, I mean you got people infected with parasites, the guy with his face covered armed with a big chainsaw. I would still buy the game though I mean I love zombie games and stuff I think Dead Rising captured a real true zombie game. Do they have some guy like the merchant in Resident Evil 4 who sells you stuff? I am wondering do you still get item drops from the enemies you kill?

EDIT: I've played RE 2, 3 and 4 I didn't bother to play RE 1 but anyways wouldn't it be cool to have the game set in asia possibly japan or something and have an asian lead in a japanese city I was never the urban type of terrain guy either. To tell you the truth they should use the game mechanics in RE 4 and 5 and make a completely new game with it, I also don't think the game is racist I mean the damn game is set in Africa, you expect to go there and see lots of white people? stop being so close minded and saying it's racist or not intentionally racist.

EDIT2: It would be a much better game if they made Resident Evil 1 to 3 with the game mechanics they have in Resident Evil 4 and 5 while still keeping the setting and story, it could be an exclusive Xbox 360 remake  :fogetcool: now wouldn't that be cool?
