This is my story. Sorry about the shitty photos. Also I forgot like half the shit because it was like half a day and I haven't gotten any sleep.
I originally planned to leave right after school around 1:00pm for the midnight signing at the Virgin Megastore in Times Square.. Hideo Kojima and Yumi Kikuchi(Raging Raven). However some guy who attended the London signing said it was too early. I've been scared and nervous about this signing for a while. I've been scarred by the Shigeru Miyamoto signing and thought I wouldn't get in. I was scared I couldn't get my Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (Which cost a fortune) signed. I was scared that I was a minor and they wouldn't sell me the game. Ton's of shit.
I packed my bag, complete with DS games, PSP, and my prized Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. I left at 2:30 and to the Virgin Megastore at around 4:30. I saw a line, it disconnected, I walked to the other... it disconnected... I was maybe on like the 5th group of 50 people. I was REALLY SCARED I wouldn't get an autograph. There I met some pretty cool people. One guy from neogaf, gametrailers etc. I went around to all the lines looking for members of MGS:TUS, which is apparently the largest metal gear fansite; nobody showed up.
I checked out the front of the line too, and I saw just the worst group of people imaginable. They were really really creepy. I felt bad for Kojima.
I heard that fat chick yelling in her phone "WE BE ON THE LINE FOR 20 HOURS, HAHA WE ARE SO HARDCORE."
From there I met some people and I guess we just chilled for 8 hours or so. In these kinda situations I tend to get hyperactive. My head started to hurt, I was twitching a lot and just bullshitted for the whole time. Some people thought I was drunk, high, one guy even told me that I was in danger of a restraining order. We played Nintendo DS, walked around, ate mcdonalds, people said I was crazy, whatever. The people were really tight, I just don't feel like elaborating this part because it was 8 hours of shitting.
As the night went past, I felt fucking beat. I was tired and whatever. I felt really brain dead. I was not functioning correctly at all. After 10:00pm people would start screaming and shit. Every time that happened I'd run down the side walk as fast as I could. Usually it could be some sort of interview thing.
This one dude with a camera was pretty chill, he was the HIP HOP GAMER. (
http://www.myspace.com/hiphopgamer http://www.youtube.com/jackal33 ). His business card said "THE NEXT#1 ARTIST THE NEXT #1 JOURNALIST ARE YOU READY?". Jesus, it was epic.
One of the times when I was running down the street, I saw this large warehouse door opening. I saw two Kojima productions staff members signaling this white van to drive in. And through the tinted windshields I saw figures. I felt the connection. It... was... Kojima.
After a long time I just started freaking out more than usual. The line started to move eventually. Again I was just DEAD BEAT. After all "EVIL IS POWERFUL, BUT COURAGE IS SOLID"
More bullshit, more bullshit. They finally let us in. I was scared as fuck I wouldn't get in, but I managed to get in moderately early compared to most. I got to the basement. I got to the cashier. I bought a copy of the game.
I got on the autograph line. But wait, someone was signing on the side of the line.... Who...who was he? It... it was CHRISTOPHER RANDOLPH (Otacon). He just, showed up. I was shocked and happy. But than after a while he just left the line, however I saw him going off to the other side.
I was near the table. I took out the sleeves for Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake which I accidental slightly dented. I took out the MGS4 sleeve. I knew I could only get one item signed, but it was a relief that they said ANY ONE ITEM. I was still tense, the MG2 was the MOST IMPORTANT ITEM FOR ME TO GET SIGNED. The other was not, but I really wanted to try to get it cast signed. They had three staff members standing right next to them to enforce policies.
I was the only one with a copy of MG2 for Kojima to sign. I was probably the only one in his whole world tour who had a copy of MG2. I've read stories about how he'd sign his own MSX copies and exclaim "SUGOI DESU-NE".
I came up to the table. The sleeve went down on the table. I saw Kojima tilt his head down towards the sleeve. I saw the standard expression on his face. But the tilt turned into a near headbutt to the table. His hands weren't on the table anymore. They were hanging down in surprise.
"WHOOOOOOOOOAAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWW" Hideo exclaimed. The way he said it was almost like a stereotypical skater dude.
I began to realize the truth in my heart.
His dulled black sharpie started to move, but before it touched the surface of paper he stopped himself for a split second. He put it down, and took out a brand new silver marker.
I knew.
The cap of the maker came off, the tip touched the sleeve. Compared to the other items he signed, there was a look of precision on his face. His hands acted in a punctilious manner.
When the ink began to spread across the black surface, I knew I was hardcore. More hardcore than anyone on the line, the message boards, the world...
And soon... it was autographed. My expensive game was now worth gold.
I moved on to Kikuchi and had her sign my MGS4 sleeve. I said "Thank you very much" and walked over to where Christopher Randolph was signing for some people. I handed him my sleeve and said "I really appreciate you coming down here", he just looked at me, signed it, and handed it back.
The moments I've been waiting years.. years for...
By the time I exited the store it was 1:30am. I had exams the next day, but more importantly I had to get to Penn Station to catch a 1:49am train. Otherwise I'd be stuck in NYC for 4 hours. I got a taxi, got driven over, and ran down the steps into the train. Finally as I began to relax into the seat, I allowed myself to enjoy my most powerful and memorable possessions.
Arigato Gomaimasu Kojima-san...
