idk i couldn't see apple doing it.  most everything they do is pretty SURE THING given their consumer base, because phones, computers, mp3 players, etc are all pretty universal and everyone would buy that shit, but i don't necessarily think their consumer base would actually be into video games enough to buy their console.  also consoles are notoriously expensive to develop and a lot more unpredictable in terms of success and profits, which is something that they seem to tend to steer away from with their business model or whatever.  i don't think they'd be overly eager about having to wait like 10 years to stop selling consoles at a loss like everything but nintendo seems to be doing right now.

We don't need another Apple Pippin.
Definitely can't see(and hope not to see) anything from them in the future.

i'm really surprised no one has mentioned APPLE, especially since their starting into the handheld gaming scene with the new iPhone. i really think they have the potential and the resources to enter in with a new console, and i think it'd probably do well (MUST BE TRENDY), so it really wouldn't surprise me at all if they came out with one in the near future.
Did you even read the topic? Multiple people have mentioned apple.
And also no, especially considering the expense, seeing as how Apple is (or should be) notorious for cutting costs. Refusal to license Mp3 or MPEG, locking you out of their hardware and software, etc.

That's not true they've had:
Lost Vikings 1
Lost Vikings 2
Rock and Roll Racing
Blackthorne
Death and Return of Superman
Justice League Task Force

And StarCraft: Ghost before it got canceled.
As far as I know, Starcraft: Ghost was being developed by some other company??

Also both Starcraft and Warcraft 2 were released for consoles (N64 and PS1 respectively iirc) but then again these are ports and probably not done by Blizzard themselves.

Anyway saying Blizzard is likely to put out a console is pretty dumb. I wouldn't be too surprised if EA came around and did something though, but I seriously hope that isn't the case.

Activision Blizzard, btw.

They're completely separated from each other but they're still one company, and I doubt either one of them would want to make a console.

I don't know about Apple. If they tried to come in I have a feeling that the other 3 would snuf them. Besides I bet there shit would be $700.

And the controllers would probably be locked in so if you broke one you'd have to send the system in to get it replaced.

I had wondered what would happen if someone like AMD/Intel/Nvidia with cpu/gpu experience made their own console. They've made a lot of the parts for previous (and current) consoles, so it wouldn't be too far fetched.

Are you guys kidding when you keep saying "Sega should come back"?  Have you stopped to think about how many exclusive games EA could get on their consoles?  I'm not just talking sports games here; they own a few big name companies and would easily stand a chance in first party development.

As for companies that EA has bought (and the games/series those companies are most known for) we've got:
Criterion Software (Burnout)
Digital Illusions CE/DICE (Battlefield 1942/Bad Company, Mirrors Edge)
Maxis (The Sims, Spore)
Bioware (Mass Effect, KOTOR, Neverwinter Nights.... you've heard of Bioware before, right?)
Pandemic Studios (Starwars: Battlefront, Mercenaries)

EA has also bought some other companies and then shut down their studios, here's a few of those as well:
Bullfrog Productions (Dungeon Keeper, Populous)
Origin Systems (Ulitma, Ultima Online)
Westwood Studios (Command & Conquer)

Basically, my point is that EA has the games to back up a system, if they wanted to make one.  Remember that these games are in addition to all the other ones EA makes themselves.

also all EA sports games sell like crazy. madden is always on the top of the sales charts and it's a yearly thing. don't they even have a monopoly of the NFL since they signed an exclusive deal? if you consider how very few of the current consoles have real exclusives (an exclusive now doesn't mean it will be exclusive forever, see RE5 and MGS2) they would actually have a lot to boast.

a big question here is why EA would want to do this. what do they really stand to gain? it took a lot of time and a lot of hassle for microsoft to establish themselves in the console business and they are only now starting to see returns. it's not like consoles are an easy business plan, if anything they are very risky.

That's the only thing I can think of.  Would EA stand to make more money if they made their own console and all their games became exclusive?  Or is it more profitable for them to continue selling their games on platforms of their choice?  It's probably a question their execs have asked themselves, and probably something they've thought of more than once.

That is the major question with a new console, would it be profitable? I don't believe it would be for EA. They are the big dog on all planes. If they where to make there own console, it would hurt there rep massively with the others and they would lose game sales in the end.

2 - Sony has more than enough money to stay in the console business. (and seems to have no idea of leaving it any time soon)

That's true, but do you think it's a good idea to stay in the console market without making profit and to fuel this with the money they make by selling lcd tvs and shit? They could do this yeah, but it's not worth it.

Their psp sales are doing fine so...I really doubt they are going to leave the console market any time soon.

But compared to DS sales, they are failing in that market.

I wouldn't say that.

Japan stuff. Last week.
# PSP - 74,024
# DS - 54,531
# Wii - 40,803
# PS3 - 11,253
You can blame Monster Hunter for this.

The PSP is doing really well right now. This isn't just a one week thing either, this past year has been really good for the system. The only real problem is that games haven't really been coming out for the system lately. It hasn't been a big problem until recently. Still, the PSP is certainly giving the DS good competition.

do you have any idea how much money it costs to make a single ps3? like 2 psps. And they are still makin ps3s. That 100 or so to make a psp won't ever make back that million or so to create all the ps3s they already made. Unless for the next year or so everyone keeps buying psps which won't always continue. I have had mine used almost every day for about 2 years now and not a single problem.
I'd like to think of myself, in a gaming team way, as a planner/director. I have everything written and in my head, but I can't code or sprite if my life depended on it.
