I don't talk about them much but I have a lot of STRONG OPINIONS about shit. I just never voice them because I don't want to be that obnoxious, arrogant guy who ambles around telling other people about his opinions on how to be a better person and making other people feel guilty for DRIVING A CAR or EATING MEAT or something.

Anyway I am not a vegetarian because I really really love meat and I really really dislike a lot of vegetables. To the point where I cannot actually put things like Tomatoes/Cucumber/Courgettes in my mouth without freaking out and feeling like I'm going to be sick. I've always put it off with lame excuses like "I would be vegetarian, but they're gonna slaughter and kill the animals anyway so I may as well not put the meat to waste!" This isn't really acceptable for me anymore.

But due to some recent events I would like to make the effort to at least take some steps towards Vegetarianism. This is mainly from my trip to the farm and actually seeing how poorly these animals can be treated, but also because it's something I've always believed in but have never really had the willpower to do.

STEP 1: Was cutting out red meats, this was easy. I'm down to chicken and fish and I could probably live with this quite comfortably, but I don't want to eat just chicken and fish every day for the rest of my life. I need some OTHER MEALS that don't involve Tomatoes/Cucumber/Courgettes. I know some of you guys are avid HEALTH COOKERS so what kind of meals can you suggest to me that taste good and will help me make this transfer from meat lover to vegetarian quite painlessly? (that don't involve tomatoes/cucumbers/courgettes!)

Also I want to ask if anybody knows about any reason why being a vegetarian might be a bad idea healthwise. I know a lot of people do it but is there any PROTEINS/VITAMINS/MINERALS I am gonna be missing out on that could cause health problems later in life? I am pretty dumb when it comes to shit like this so knowing about it would be helpful.

Thanks guys, Point me to your WEBSITES and RECIPES.

you could get meat substitutes, that's what i do. quorn stuff. it's all right and really easy to cook. i mean, real meat can potentially be better but most of it isn't any better than quorn so if you dunno how you are gonna create new eating habits without meat just use fake burgers etc to fill in the blanks. the texture is exactly the same as meat, even the fake chicken and stuff, but it does taste kind of fakey. i mean, i like quorn just fine. i'd probably eat some of it even if i wasn't vegetarian but if you're a big freakazoid about tomatoes and cucumbers then who knows how you'll react to this stuff.

also, chickpeas are apparently a versatile thing you can buy as a substitute for meat in things like curries and there are also a whole bunch of things you can make with them too. there was a chickpeas gw chef topic a while ago, i'm gonna go find it actually cos i bought chickpeas a couple of days ago.

it's pretty weird how food suddenly becomes a topic of discussion when you decide to exclude some of it from your diet. i never thought about food at all until this whole vegetarian business and i am afraid that i am being frightfully boring by talking about it. i make sure not to use words like GORGEOUS or BEAUTIFUL when describing food though cos man do i hate those people.

i've got no recipes i'm still fairly new at this. i'll probably pick things up as things go on, but i've just kind of been experimenting with stuff and seeing what i like. i made a kidney bean curry last week and put it in garlic pitta bread it was the best thing i ever made at least and i was just making it up as i went along.

i think that's kind of fun, the experimenting with food you never would have tried before and mixing stuff together you wouldn't have thought to.

vegetarianism...it's a god damned adventure.

This is probably why you hate cucumbers!

I am on the fringes of becoming a vegetarian too so I am very interested in this topic.  I am a big fan of Tofurkey products so if you REALLY LOVE POULTRY SAUSAGES I guess that is a good substitute.  Black bean burgers are amazing as well.

Hey, I actually read a really cool related article in... either Science Daily or NYT recently. I'll go get it one sec!

Ok, this isn't it but I thought it was cool too and serves as a primer for my actual article I'm still looking for: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/07/080723094838.htm

Holy shit, I apparently read a lot more articles than I thought because this was way back, but here it is: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/07/080716205208.htm

So maybe you can learn to start liking veggies more too with your newly acquired disposition towards meat. :P

Yeah it makes a lot of sense but I don't think I am all of a sudden going to start liking things that I disliked before, and disliking meat because I've decided to take these steps.

Anyway I just had a rocking SWEETCORN PASTA. I am feeling good about myself.

Oh, I didn't mean it like YOU WILL INSTANTLY HATE MEAT AND LOVE VEGETABLESSS!!!!!!11. But as your views about vegetables and meat change so may your tastes, and if you start eating vegetables more you may become more accustomed to the flavours as well as the depth of tastes (similar to how a person may be able to appreciate subtle flavours in cheese, wine, chocolate, whatever, that some of us are oblivious to).

I am probably the only vegan here that actual posts frequently.  You said you don't like vegetables but which ones have you tried and how have you tried them?  I was the same way as you.  When I was a meat eater the only vegetables I ever ate was cucumbers, tomatoes (only in ketchup/marinara), broccoli, and corn.  Now I eat so much shit.  When I went vegan my food choices expanded greatly as I began trying new things I never tried before or even ever heard of.

Being vegetarian is not bad healthwise.  Even being vegan you can get every thing you need.  People ask you stupid questions like, "omg where do you get protein!?" when protein is in pretty much everything (minus fruits).  There is a good book called The New Becoming Vegetarian that goes over all vitamins/minerals/other health stuff with vegetarians.  I have the Becoming Vegan book and it is great.  It tells you about all the vitamins and minerals and what are good veggie sources for them.  Basically dont' overdue the dairy because it's not really good for you if you eat a lot of it.  Lots of vegetarians make dairy their main source of food and they miss out on things like iron (that is why lots of veggie chicks are anemic) and other stuff.  Basically just eat a variety of foods from the food groups.

Also you are doing it for moral reasons?  Have you looked into the egg and dairy industries?

You should really make an attempt to like vegetables. Today for lunch I have (all raw): carrots, snow peas, mushrooms, celery, and broccoli. That's the main part of my lunch, every day. I also have a half sandwich (turkey and muenster on whole grain bread), a banana and a plum. It cost like 3 dollars and is fucking delicious! Plus, it's a lot of food so I can eat it all day and never be hungry. Carrots are a big deal imo, you should really get those and like them. They are nice and sweet, and chew up good so you feel like you're eating something. Don't get baby carrots, they just grind down normal carrots and it's such a waste and you lose out on all sorts of nutrients.

I'm not adverse to eating meat though it's just so important to get a good amount of vegetables in every day.

Yeah I've had feelings about vegetarianism but the shit thing is that my taste buds like REVOLT a shitload of vegetables.

I hate string beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, celery, onions, avocado, beets, bell pepper, cucumber, asparagus, and sweet peppers...and a bunch of other stuff. I've honestly tried them all and my taste buds either sort them as disgusting or tasteless/bitter.

However, I love potatoes, sweet potatoes, broccoli (but I need cheese haha), peas (but I need butter), lettuce, rice, beans, and corn.

So I'm in bad luck :(

A food item you may want to try is vegitarian lasagne, you can use different vegtable puree's with spices to kick out that tomato sauce but you get to use spinach which is similar in vitamin and mineral content to red meat. And you get to add different vegtables that can have meaty flavors it really is something that you can play around with for different flavors.

I never really saw a good reason to become a vegetarian. Although I disagree with the cruel treatment of animals, it really just doesn't resonate very strongly with me that I can be part of the change by simply changing diet. And I'm a very big fan of cooking and eating good food, too; I don't want to limit myself. I want to be able to make smoked salmon, coq aux vin and pâté en croûte when I want to.

You should be more concerned about eating healthy food. Getting your daily amount of vegetables (200 grams) and fruit (2 pieces) is important. As for the rest: go wild. You're taking what you eat into consideration and that's a very good thing.

EDIT:

Thanks, I'm making cheesecake brownies tomorrow.

Same here.

Props to you for having the willpower to go vegetarian, though. I've been trying to cut soda out of my diet for years, but some reason I just can't. Mostly because I don't like water and its lack of flavor. So good luck to you!

Yeah I love water so if I go without soda for a while I have no problems.

BM, since you're thinking of going vegetarian for some (nonexistent) moral reasons, make sure you stay clear of refried beans, too. They're choc full of animal lard.

i've given thought to this because meat doesn't do that much for me, though sometimes when i eat vegetables i feel less satisfied that before i ate! this is especially true of apples.

here are some things i like eating that don't have meat in them:
mashed potatoes
maccoroni and cheese
rice
peanut butter
pasta
corn flakes
fruit loops
toast
cake
brownies
ice cream
garlic bread
pickles
cookies
etc etc etc

I used to drink 7+ cans of coke a day and gave that up overnight :)

Also it is possible to get refried beans without lard in them.

Oven - baked stuffed bell peppers.

Yeah, I'm getting sick of what I eat myself. When I don't eat pasta (pasta...pasta...and pasta) I eat rice, bread, or Albertsons shit chicken. Or I eat out. Ugh. I'm tired all the time, take frequent naps during the midday, and I don't think as clearly as I know I ought to. I wonder if its the high carb diet. At any rate, I need something cheap to start changing things up.

EDIT: Pea salad is pretty badass, too.
