So that lame little browser game that Chef linked and you guys are all into got me thinking, and despite the fact that I would never be able to get into that game, I found the whole topic itself to be pretty cool.  Like, you were all hiding out in WAREHOUSES and talking about finding shelter and fuel and food and hospitals and guns and tools and really it just struck me that SURVIVING ZOMBIE ONSLAUGHT is a really appealing prospect to me.  So I am thinking, and because at this point I have given up on ever playing ZOMBIE MMO that will not blow terribly, there are two other options: regular games and pen and paper RPGs.

There is Left 4 Dead in a few months, and that looks cool for sure, but it looks too action-driven as well, and not focused enough on cool shit like HIDING OUT//FINDING TOOLS which is really the part I've got a boner for.  The only other zombie games I can think of are like... beat em ups, arcade shooter games like House of the Dead or whatever, and obviously Resident Evil which is alright but kind of OLD HAT.  If anyone has any suggestions for video games, that would be fly.

But then I was thinking about the P&P RPGs and those seem kind of open-ended and cool along the same vein as that browser-based game but uh... idk somehow tolerable.  Here's what I've found so far:

http://www.pen-paper.net/gamedb.php?op=showothergame&othergameid=2
http://www.pen-paper.net/rpgdb.php?op=showbook&bookid=5105
http://www.pen-paper.net/rpgdb.php?op=showbook&bookid=4058

I'm actually not sure if the third one is a game or FICTION, but yeah, the first one seems pretty casual and very cool sounding, and it and the third one also have that campy OHNO CITY//URBAN AREA FULL OF ZOMBIES feel which is exactly what I want, but then the second one seems pretty in-depth and it goes on for like 50 years ingame, and that also struck me as being neat.  My brother's into this shit too, and we'd been talking about like... D&D shit lately, but both of us have sort of a distaste for high fantasy so this is opportune, and maybe we'd get some dudes together and do it.  Soooo yeah, these are basically all I can find.  Has anyone played them?  And if so, what do you think?  But I mean, if you know of any other tabletop RPGs like this, tell me about them, because I'm really in the market for as many options as possible and I don't know enough about this to know where to find out about every single one that's been made.  There are ton of other HIGH FANTASY ZOMBIE ones but I'm only looking for ones in contemporary settings, like your average zombie movie or whatever.

Zombie Smashers X and the other games by ska software might be worth checking out.  Zombie Smashers X plays similar to River City Ransom but you're killing zombies.  It's the only game by that company I've played, but their other one, Survival Crisis Z, might be more along the lines of what you're looking for.

Zomband is a fun little roguelike that I've had fun with in my couple of playthroughs. It probably won't survive too many playthroughs since it's fairly short and limited but it still has a great atmosphere.

As for zombie boardgames you can always do a search around BoardGameGeek

EDIT:
They also have a tag system which may make you find those zombie games without "zombie" in the title. (I couldn't find it a first because I looked in the wrong place)

Thanks for the list!  That looks like a lot more games than I was expecting or knew how to find.

Also, this Survival Crisis Z or whatever is a lot like what I wanted.  The graphics are kind of weak, though, and the controls are awkward, which makes basic navigation/shooting like 50 zombies at a time something of a pain.  A more modern version of this would be great, though!

I honestly suggest you check out GURPS 4.0 which is two books (the campaign guide and the players guide).  That's all you need to create an entire zombie campaign.  Seriously.

The problem with zombie RPG's is that they all try to contain an entire game system as well as giving you tips to run a horror campaign and it just doesn't work out well due to size limitations.  You end up getting something really detailed but if you ever want to do something different you'll find yourself shoehorned by really restrictive rules.

GURPS is a complete ruleset for a "generic rpg" in that it gives you rules for combat, movement, character generation, and stuff but it's one of the few RPGs designed for "realism" that also allows intense modification without disrupting balance.  For example, the standard character build for a "heroic fantasy game" is 150 point build but they give you tips for creating a realistic 21st century modern character which would be 25-50 points for your average Joe and 75 points for a star athlete or something.

The rules also go really in depth with combat, vehicle construction, the effects of fatigue on the body and stuff like that and you can easily modify the rules for anything you need.  It has a steep learning curve but once you get it down you can make any game from realistic zombie survival to cavemen fighting giant robots action and no other set of RPG rules allows that.

Best choice for little money IMO since it's a reusable source.

EDIT: I mentioned in another topic I wanted to make a realistic zombie roguelike but everyone laughed at me and said the idea was dumb :(

This would be a cool Paintball game. You start off with like ten zombies vs. 2 survivors. Survivors get paintball guns and can only kill the zombies with headshots. The zombies only have to tag you. To make it interesting, you'd play on a hill map, where you defend a fort. (obvious)
That would beat any game zombie sim!

I'm totally serious about this too. I'll probably do this next time I go paintballing. Damn it'd be intense!
You'd have to funnel the area they can come up, and you'd have limited ammo! defending for say five minutes. Wow I can't believe I didn't think of this earlier! It would be freakin' insane man.

how bout the zombies get slingshots because by definition they can only make new zombies through a melee attack

unless of course you're talking about the '28 days later' style of zombie in which case a sneeze or a cough also works

Yeah, I loved San Andreas, but it was just such a black game. :x Like. Eh, I dunno, it was all so frickin' black, and I enjoyed the atmosphere of Vice City more.

who wants to be on a paintball field with no gun?
Fuck that, Those things hurt. SPECIALLY if fired Point blank.
You wanna know what would be more intense?
if the zombies had Paintball guns too?
Those two people, Sitting at the top of the hill. Fuck are they in for a surprise.

The Good Zombie Games have been mentioned, Well, In the Style you want.
I Personally want a slightly more Refined Survival Crisis Z game with better graphics and clearer goals and such, Because you can do so much shit in that game but it tells you how to do absolute dick.

I Found the Flash games "Last Stand" to be quite fun, Specially the second one where you had to search the town and move on to the helecopter in the last town.

Yep Survival Crisis Z was a great game but it lacked good visuals and was more free roam and didn't follow a storyline, I also liked the last stand games.

That would be a fucking excellent paintball game. It'd be so fun, even if you were a zombie. Just run like fuck and hope that you tag someone.

Has anyone played the zombie board game? I have all 7 sets, and it's pretty damn fun.

The Last guy looks like garbage actually. The write-up is really nothing like the game. It's more like an overhead lemmings . All the gameplay footage I've seen doesn't even have zombies; just over-the-top "monsters". It strikes me as a puzzle game if anything.

BTW... there already is a Paintball Zombie Gamemode...
Zombies and Surviviors both have guns (cause, seriously... who would go down there without the ability to shoot)
If a Zombies shoots a Survivior anywhere... they become a Zombies... (They being Survivior)
If a Survivior headshots a Zombies. they become a Survivior (they being Zombies)
If a Survivior shoots a Zombies anywhere other then the head... nothing happens.
One side wins once there are no more players on the other side.
Basic... Simple... Fun...
