This is actually one of my favorite bands. <3
I'm a little surprised anyone's actually, uh, HEARD of them, though. I had thought they were understandably obscure, in some ways.

I downloaded one of their albums a few years ago and listened to a few tracks and hated it so deleted it. I liked the sound of animals fighting for a bit, but then realised that they are trying too hard to be different and comes off undeveloped and silly

edit: I tell a lie! It's still on my computer. Juturna. What's that mean?

I'm surprised more of you don't appreciate this band.

Circa Survive has been my favorite group for a while now, and Anthony Green will always be my favorite vocalist.  His voice may sound a little whiny at first but it grows on you after a while.  He has a very broad vocal range, unique voice, and writes incredible lyrics.

Here are two great songs from their first album:

And another song from their second album:

AG's new album, Avalon, just recently came out too.  It's mainly acoustic but if you like his voice and lyric writing you'll definitely like it.

His voice isn't what bothers me-- I don't even think whiny is a good word to describe it.  Please post samples of his lyrics being incredible.

His songs aren't based on typical love scenarios or the like.  ie: the first album is heavily based off of Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind and I believe the second album is about religion; however, not necessarily against it, only concerning it.  You've really gotta dig deep to understand his writing.

I'm not going to post any lyrics because they would make no sense without listening to the song/understanding for yourself.

Of course there are many artists who I think have equal if not better writing capabilities. (see Death Cab for Cutie, RX Bandits, The Mars Volta)

I agree with Malad. The first song I ever heard by Anthony was Seven Years and I thought it voice sounded interesting to say the least. I just bonded with his voice and music when I was younger and not much has changed. I don't really like his new solo album except for a couple songs. I actually like some of the demos and earlier versions better. But. I think people either love or hate his voice. I'm one of the latter :>

They aren't mainstream but they sure as hell aren't obscure.

Anyway, they are alright imo.

What are you talking about. How does posting the lyrics NOT make sense without hearing the song? I'm not sure I'm understanding you here...it's like reading poetry. I agree with couch, post some lyrics.

also what were you referring to with that last sentence? death cab has awful lyrics.

what, no they aren't.

they're maudlin horseshit lyrics, jesus christ. in fact I can think of no other band that embodies maudlin horseshit lyrics than death cab.

whoops I forgot

Quote
And I do believe it’s true
That there are roads left in both of our shoes
But if the silence takes you
Then I hope it takes me too
Quote
Love of mine some day you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark
Quote
And then the nurse comes round and everyone will lift their heads
But I'm thinking of what Sarah said that "Love is watching someone die"

So who's going to watch you die?.
Quote
I once knew a girl
In the years of my youth
With eyes like the summer
All beauty and truth
In the morning I fled
Left a note and it read
Someday you will be loved.

four random songs all about I LOVE YOU I WONT FORGET YOU WHEN I FUCK OFF/DIE yes these are some lyrical masterminds here.

haha

I like Death Cab but those lyrics are retarded. I know their music is riddled with metaphors but most of the time they are really shitty metaphors.

someone kill ben gibbard's girlfriend so he can die already it's what he wants!

seriously death cab is like THE EXAMPLE of a band overcoming their shitty lyrics to become passable (not by much I don't care for them), I refuse to believe the music forum thinks they have good lyrics.

Wait, so are you saying they are all about literally "i love you, i wont forget you when i leave/die"?

first song is just a general love song or something.  second one is love/we will grow old together some day you will get old and die and i wont be able to live without you etc (also you left out the cooler parts of the lyrics "if heaven and hell decide that they both are satisfied, illuminate the 'no's on their vacancy signs" ok wait though thats the only cool part there are no partS i guess but still!).  third one is about losing someone and thinking about the relationships you have, the connections you've made and wondering who is going to be there for you like you are for this person (whoever dies in the song).  fourth song is about leaving someone and feeling guilty about not feeling guilty about it.

I never said they were really out there or super creative in terms of topic choice-- most of their songs are definitely about love and relationships etc, and all four of them I guess are related to love/loss kinda like you said if you want to boil it down a bit and ignore the details, but at the same time I think some of it is their lyricism is generally more on the clever side.  Not saying gibbard is a lyrical genius or the best writer of our generation or whatever the hell ART BEAUTIFUL DEEP etc but, while I grant his lyrics are maudlin, they certainly aren't "horseshit".

they are all the same shit argh.

I listen to gangster rap and that has more variety than Death Cab lyrics. when you repeat a theme (if I lose you I'll be sad) four times in four RANDOM CLICKS (should have said this), I really don't think you're a clever lyricist dogg.

that and the metaphors are all awful.

yea lol i didnt think there would be anyone that would argue deathcab lyrics are good.  they are overwrought as fuck and kind of embarrassing considering hes a pasty thirty year old fat white dude and not sixteen.  like steel said it is very maudlin//one-note for basically all of their songs, so yeah!  i gotta go to class but i will CONSTRUCT ARGUMENT when i get back
