Y' know, I didn't get too far in Mother 2. I just...couldn't really get into it, but this game looks pretty good. I might retry Earthbound whenever I have the time.

You deboed my topic! was going to make this the moment the patch came out.

Quote
Mother
Mother 2 = Earthbound
Mother 3

Mother was the first to be called Earthbound. NoA updated the gui (and added run I believe), tweaked some graphics, TRANSLATED, but never published it.... the beta cartridge of this being leaked and sold on ebay about a decade later (the beta ripped from this being "Earthbound Zero"). Fun fact: The version we made, thought of to be superior, was then retranslated to japanese and was used in the Mother 1 + 2 compilation on the GBA. Why wasn't it released despite having been finished? Too risky.

It was never released stateside though so they stuck the name Earthbound to Mother 2.. which had problems of it's own (This game Stinks!).

...

Mother 3 having it's own share of problems too. Like not getting looked at by NoA at all.

it looks like it aged pretty well too, just looking at the screens. this game looks as if they could throw this on the DS and you would think it was made today.

Well... it is only two years old afterally~

So starman isnt going to release the patch monday so as not to "compete" with the VC Earthbound release? when will they put it back up?

That was a joke, Aztec. It isn't announced.

Marcus was just pointing out that if Nintendo made a move like that, we wouldn't get the translation, even though we are SO FUCKING CLOSE to getting it right now.

Turns out there's a member at rmxp.org that worked on the translation from 2 years back.  Turns out they were almost finished twice but the faggots in charge wanted to redo the whole script.  Once starmen approached them about the merge they decided to dump the translation AGAIN and start fresh.

We could have been playing this shit last year goddammit

@Miek: Yeah, they brought me in a little while after their first translator had a hissy fit and left the project for who knows why. I wan't the head translator, but I did most of the minor side-stuff (spell names, descriptions, items, towns, etc etc etc.) The original translator had translated pretty much all of the story text and it just needed to be cleaned up a bit. By the time tshu and the starmen folks merged we had the script pretty much done (maybe a half a month's worth of work left) and then they wanted to do it all over again. mato's translation might be better, but I dunno. I'd like to think ours was better :P

That's just it though. This is the kind of game where it's sucess is guranteed, but cannot be repeated. If Nintendo goes around promoting games like this and letting gamers worldwide understand how good theese games can be, then soon, not only gamers will be expecting it, but they won't even accept the junk that they are forced to digest from the "mainstream market" for all theese years. It will shift the paradigm to games that cannot be "invented" by a committe of publishing executives looking back at the "hip trends" of previous gaming generations, and their ability to release "blockbuster titles" will be severely hindered by each occurence of a game that actually deserves that status.

It's the only way I see their actions making any sense at all, if you got a better explanation the I'm all ears.

I like this theory

it's kind of reminds me how I liked Pete and Pete growing up and that was also this sort of offbeat kids thing that was kind of for adults too and like maybe the Mother games win all sorts of awards and ACCOLADES in Japan like Pete and Pete did but Nickelodeon was really shitty with new Pete and Pete episodes I think so I consider Nintendo the Nickelodeon to Pete and Pete's Earthbound or something like that

well yeah i've got a dump of "earthbound zero" but nobody calls mother 1 earthbound except weird rom kids. when you say earthbound you're probably talking about mother 2. also mother 1 was ugly as sin.

You can't say that for sure. Implementing the translation takes much longer than the translation itself... and if this devlog was any indication of how these things would have went down... bugs/ formatting/ menu/ memory issues would still have to have been hammered out first. It took this team about 9-10 months to get all of that shit out of the way before they even started implementing the translation at a full scale (since all they had to work with in the mean time where translated menus).... so who knows how long it would have taken the first teams.

Wow and I was just about to assume this was going to see a simultaneous release with Duke Nukem Forever. I've already bought an EZ Flash 3-in-1 just so I can play this game on handheld like it was meant to be played...

This.

I've been playing it for a bit and I have to say, it's really great so far, and just as weird as I thought it would be. And Flint is totally awesome.

Parts of the game seem more surreal than EB, while parts seem more serious. I'm really early on still, but it's definitely got the MOTHER FLAVOUR. I also have to commend the translation - it's smooth and reads like Earthbound, with lots of sort of bizarre writing that is endearing in its goofyness.

Man this is amazing

seriously I'm in love every time a new sprite of someone appears on the screen, or I reach a new map, or read a line of text, or walk aimlessly even
