I just wanted to post this topic because this a) confirms Bioshock 2 (like anyone wondered if it would happen) and b) is what's released as a teaser for it.

Personally, I have no fucking clue why they did this except to slap you across the face for like 3 minutes and say "HEY WE HAVE BIOSHOCK 2 COMING". There was nothing really standing-out in the video, except maybe that the Little Sister (I'm assuming that's the woman) is grown up, so the game takes place in the 1980s?

Either way, it's most likely a Little Sister grown so it rules out a prequel. Other than that, the video's pretty useless unless someone else can pick up on something out of nowhere!

So, discuss and all that about the useless video!

I've never played Bioshock and i dont own any of the new consoles but i watched it anyway.

I dunno, its a big name and they really should've put a bit more of a build up on that. It was a neat video but it was proper.
"Oh, hey, just so you know!"
rather than
"...guess what!"

It feels like a bit of a wet fart as hyping goes.

I never played the game but I did read this:

Quote
I am Andrew Ryan and I am here to ask you a question:
Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?

No, says the man in Washington. It belongs to the poor.
No, says the man in the Vatican. It belongs to God.
No, says the man in Moscow. It belongs to everyone.

I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something
different. I chose the impossible. I chose...
Rapture.

the whole point with andrew ryan is that he's a megalomaniac!

and he is not the main character he is the shadowy nemesis that lurks in the shadows in the

edit:

also fyi that speech is andrew ryan's introduction to his ideals speech that is played while the character passes through rupture for the first time, seeing what complete failure the entire project is and how everyone inside are living horrible lives while andrew ryan is completely out of touch with reality concerning his brainchild'

so it makes a lot of sense in context

plus the fact that it's audio commentary over what is, in-game at least, an actual propaganda film!

man wikipedia page has interviews with the dude who created this game, he talks about Rand like his favorite fantasy author. it kind of sucks because gamers are so stupid that they'll hear the shit I posted above and just think "yeap pretty much"

that doesn't really CONSOLE me lars. is it saying that rand fucking sucks??? because if so then OK, I'll still think it's a pretty dumb game but I won't hate it anymore. I guess I need to play through it myself but I really don't want to, looks dumb as hell

I like this part from wikipedia too:

So wait, does Bioshock support Ayn Rand's ideals or does it show how shit objectivism actually is. I'm guessing by the ruined ayn randian 'utopia' that it is anti-rand  but you never know!

Atlas Shrugged ruined my life...

It's a teaser... that's it's exact purpose. Like how Dark Knight had little clips of the joker's face and then big darkknight logo. They aren't trying to tell you anything except that they're going to work on it, to wet the appetite.

Bioshock's a really cool/fun game on it's first playthrough(but has minimal replay value I find as you know where everything is) but Ken Levine is an idiot whoe approach to storytelling is just the typical Shootthingsinthefaceandclearthelevel. He fucking loves Ayn Rand, and any interviews with him are so unbearable to read. Even the bioshock team hated him(they refused to work on bioshock 2 because he just pissed them off). It's really wasted potential, fun and has a really cool atmosphere that most fps games lack, but the narrative isn't fleshed out one bit unless you read the audiocommentaries (but then WHACKY CHARACTERS become a replacement for story and you're supposed to just accept what happened with everyone going insane)

It's pretty judgemental to say "gamers are stupid and they'll believe everything they are showed". The plot twist in the game actually pushes the player to think back about "why are we doing what we are told in games". Sure, not all are going to see this and most are just going to enjoy the pretty solid FPS it is but those same people won't start reading Rand and believe all this shit. The game is a pretty solid critic of her philosophy actually.

And yes, that quote from Game Informer is a bit too much but Bioshock did prove that games can explore deeper themes and go beyond "save the princess".

That made me want certain games to have New Game+ that actually does something to the story and not just "your level 999 at the beginning of the game". Like if someone that you followed throughout the game was actually the 'bad guy' you could kill him at when you first meet him and have the story be different.

bioshock is very antilibertarian. the society falls apart because the second someone develops an underground free market, ryan (who is rand) goes nuts.

seriously 90% of the reason I liked the game is because it shows you exactly what would happen in a libertarian system.

theres also a character named Atlas who betrays you (oh no a spoiler for a year old game).

I thought it was confirmed that the game was going to be a trilogy?

As loquacious as Levine is, BioShock had a pretty mature storyline for a videya.  It would be nice if he just dropped all pretenses of EMOTIONAL CHOICES and just focused on making a good narrative because everything up to the confrontation with ryan was grand.

tried to submit this post like five times but gw keeps breaking. that's cool if it's anti-libertarian but
The game is a pretty solid critic of her philosophy actually.
I doubt it's much of a solid critic when there's apparently RAND LORE everywhere and the dude who created it loves her. yeah great if the fictional city fails, we already knew her shit was dumb.

gamers really do get their values from games/anime. I can hook you up with some youtubes if you want

what? man I barely play games and I realize this wasn't something that needed to be proved. no one else needed to give their game a coat of Rand to do it either

in a libertarian system we'd all move 1000 leagues under the sea start injecting ourselves with bio-plasmids thus giving ourselves superhuman powers setting the stage for a bloodbath where vending machines sell bullets and life, and wrenches, pistols and tommy guns are all just tools of the trade....children of rapture...welcome to BioShock. BioShock.

BioShock.

BioShock.

bioshock tried something but was so fucking pleased with itself for doing so and ken levine has no right to be such a pretentious prick about the whole thing seeing as the game doesn't really do much more than reference shit outside of it and act like it's got something big to say. i'm not disagreeing with "the message", the game is just a gratuitous obnoxious simplistic prick. i don't hate it though, i say this from a position of healthy gaming respect.

i don't know what's worse; people who get their morals from vidya or people who feel better about themselves by putting everyone down

i'm in the latter category so it's not like i'm a hypocrite

perhaps, just perhaps, we are wrong in not taking our ideals from the vidya and, just like ayn rand, we believe to be a part of something greater when in reality we're the excluded majority...

I bought this game recently just to see how it portrays Rand's values.  The game is pretty fun, and I really like the style.  I have to give them credit, because usually games or movies based on that type of shit tend to suck.

wait what

if you're talking about what i said then i don't get your point? i mean i know about ayn rand and all her society shit etc etc. so i kind of miss your point?

if it's not about me then wtf

also, like i said, i loved bioshock. it was more of the atmosphere idea i guess. like i said, it had flaws but idk i liked it! also it's not like the libertarian society flourished, it fucking nose-dived. plus ken levine is a dick.
