I got another night of childlessness so I hauled my ass (through six inches of snow) up to the city to see the other movie I've been gunning to see.
Alien Neo Ted and the Enormous Magical Space Marbles (AKA The Day the Earth Stood Still) casts Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, an alien in a human body, here to save the Earth from. . . yeah, and there's Jennifer Connelly, Will Smith Junior and some other folks who all bumble through this slow-ass film in an vain attempt to save it from Keanu, who could have been replaced with a brick of cream cheese and no one would have noticed. In all fairness, I understand why Reeves got the part; not many people can pull off the stiff acting like he can and look reasonably good on screen doing it. Unfortunately, this film cost too much to be considered campy and it all I kept thinking about during the film was how painfully cheesey the camera work was (we ALL love the slow pan off the back of an actor's head looking up at a giant space marble, especially when it's done 569465 times in the course of one film) and the soundtrack was practically lifted from a dozen other, far better sci-fi films of the last twenty years. That's not to say that it didn't have its good points; Will Smith Junior is proving himself to be a decent actor and mechanized locusts are always fun to see. Basically, the theme of the movie is HUMANS ARE RUINING THE PLANET which I already know. If you're big into Keanu Reeves or alien robot bugs, you may enjoy this. Personally, I'm pissed that I spent $10.00 plus two hours of driving time to see a movie that I could have rented in six months and disliked from the comfort of my couch.
Also, aliens like having business meetings at McDonald's. Just food for thought.
