"Return of the Pirates" on history

its a really cool and informative look at modern piracy if anyone wants to check it out.

They make the piracy problem look worse then it actually is though, because even though the shit DOES HAPPEN it doesn't happen nearly as often as you might think.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - This was great, a little long but a nice enough odd type of story. Weird seeing Brad Pit look so old, they did a good job with the effects especially making him look smaller as an elderly person. This is one worth checking out.

Serenity
It was terrible. I actually didn't have any idea what Serenity and Firefly are before watching this (I heard people talking about them but never bothered to look into it), so I had no expectations. The movie was just bad, unless it's supposed to be a parody of flashy but dumb space operas, but that's been done before. It had some good moments, but it never crosses the line between mildly entertaining to good movie. I was shocked to see that it was well received at IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes... guess I have a terrible taste... :(

Being John Malkovich
This movie on the other hand was really awesome. I saw Adaptation and loved it, and I think Being John Malkovich is even better. It's a neat concept and although it kinda falls apart halfway through it manages to pick up near the end. Am I the only one who noticed how people bending in the office because of the low ceiling made them resemble puppets in a way? That was cool.

You are the first person I've heard of that didn't like Serenity.  Ever.

I hadn't heard of Firefly before seeing it either, and I still loved the shit out of it :/

Well, what's good about it exactly?

All the actors were bad. There were hints of plot but it was never interesting. No character stood out and it was just another cliche sci fi crew. Some things seemed thrown in for no reason (main character's love interest) and some seemed to reference Firefly I guess but didn't make sense if you haven't seen that. The action scenes were okay, but I was never a big fan of anime action scenes featuring little girls possessed by fighting spirits. The space CG scenes were pretty generic and had ugly designs, though I liked one scene where they lure grievers or whatever to fight the union, but then I also liked a few scenes in Mummy 3 and it's still a terrible movie.

I'm trying to go over it again in my head to remember anything positive and I just can't. Even as something that's not supposed to be taken seriously (I didn't mind the Fifth Element) it never proved to be genuinely good. I can understand why people would find it entertaining the way you find Indiana Jones entertaining, but it's just not good.

Yea I didn't like it either. It was pretty unmemorable in my opinion, but the only part of the movie that sticks out to me is when the black guy ninja shows up the first time, and you get this very distinct deja vu. I haven't seen Firefly though so maybe I'm missing pieces to the puzzle.

Serenity got such a huge fanfare because in contrast to a lot of the big-budget CG/fantasy/sci-fi movies that were coming out a the time, it had an air of genuine well constructedness, even if it was formulaic and, dare I say it, poorly acted. Compared to most of the sci-fi fantasy from the past five years (especially all that Marvel Comics stuff) as far as simple charm and being easily receptive and not overly flashy or neither being underwhelmingly empty, Serenity is around the top of the pile. I think it has a lot to do with the balance that Whedon had to strike in writing it for television. In my opinion, its just a well balanced film in a genre that has forgotten what that means.

Gran Torino - It was really good. It was actually a lot funnier than I expected, so that kind of disoriented me, but as a drama it also works really well. I can't imagine anyone but Eastwood to play the main character. I definitely recommend this movie.

Paul Blart, Mall Cop - When I bought the ticket for this movie I wasn't really expecting much. To be honest it was just "ok", it had some really funny parts but the overall feel was lacking. (This could be because there were 5 kids behind laughing at EVERYTHING that happened)

I went and saw The Dark Knight in IMAX last night since I missed it the first time around (yeah I'm the only person alive) and had only seen it on DVD. I then... proceeded to go home and watch it on DVD and today I watched it on DVD, and I'm probably gonna go watch it again. It's such a waste of my time but I love that movie unhealthily.

I liked meet the spartans too :P

Watch after the credits if you make it that far. There's another 10 minutes of them kicking people in the hole that didn't make it into the movie
