I'm still not convinced that The Happening isn't some kind of avant-garde comedy or something.

That, when he talks to the plant, and when he starts singing "Black Water" by the Doobie Brothers to prove how normal he was were my favorite parts.

Last Saturday I was kind of bored, so I picked a movie at random and went to see a Finnish documentary called Miesten Vuoro (Steam of Life). I think this has got some attention outside Finland in movie festivals and here too for being all whoa good artsy movie from our country??! Basically it's a collection of short scenes where men from different backgrounds tell their sad life stories while in a sauna. There's divorce, there's losing a child, homelessness and so on. And there's tears. Lots and lots of manly tears. You don't usually see men (Finnish men even less lolol) pouring their hearts out and showing their feelings. You're supposed to bottle it up and then let it explode 40 years later and kill yourself.

So it was kind of interesting and sometimes even a bit touching. There's a couple of funny scenes too. My only problem with this movie really is that some of the scenes were way too long. I don't want to say boring because it's real people and real feelings (whoa..) but really, some of it could've used some editing. I rate it DECENT MOVIE out of TEN

Here's a trailer, which I guess is nsfw cause it has naked people in it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5HfmtU25ww

It was really good. The last 25 minutes were incredibly intense.

I'm fed up of people spelling sHyaMaLaN wrong. It's sHyaMaLaN. He had the alternating capital letters legally added by deed poll.

I like that I accidentally messed up alternating capital letters in that last post. Twice.

I just watched Inception and liked it. What was weird was how, uh, UNWEIRD it was! I'm not being catty, I was kind of dreading that the whole film would just be ~symbolism~ and bad David Lynch pastiche full of craaaazy dancing dwarves etc but it seemed to go deliberately in the other direction. Like for a film about dreaming it was pretty completely unevocative! At first I thought it was just because of the kind of uh glossy and memory-less nature of recent action films (the Bourne ones etc) but looking back I think it was pretty deliberate. Like most of the action takes place in completely sterile, impersonal, memoryless locations like train carraiges, airplanes, empty warehouses, business lobbys, concrete buildings, a snow fortress section ripped from "Tomorrow's Not Enough" for the N64, and iirc there was actually a line in there about making dream locations which weren't constructed from memory at all to make them less noticeable. All the walls are clean and the furniture is classy and new and everything gleams. I guess the whole thing with the constantly breaking in was maybe about how it's impossible to do this and maybe the subconscious will always sneak in and start ripping shit up but I don't think the whole look/tone/pace of the movie supported this at all! IDK that's probably it but it seems really strange and perverse to make a film about dreams which is almost entirely devoid of memory or subconcious or personality or desire. I'm not saying it's a bad thing though and think it's more interesting and possibly had more thought involved than the traditional use of the dream sequence as an excuse to artsy up the joint.

On the other hand maybe I'm overthinking it and it was just a kind of okay film that demonstrates how completely glossy action movies have taken over if they can make a high-concept thing about dreams and just make it another rush of shiny surfaces and a cheap excuse for SLOWMO FIGHT SCENE aaaaa. Gimme ya thoughts.

this is pretty much what i thought. like i guess it worked for what its worth, but i thought the wife thing was a bad move and kinda took away from the movie in order to develop the main character. TBH i thought leo's character was really predictable and boring and everytime he wife showed up i groaned a little.
a lot of this movie didn't add up (for instance why rolling the van down a hill while theyre sleeping doesn't wake them up, but moving the elevator does) but i think for the sake of the ride you have to suspend disbelief

yeah it was a good dumb action movie. like thecatamites started saying, it's like those other dumb fast-paced action movies that are all over the place these days only Inception actually has a good reason to explain why it is like it is

it was really really formulated tho. like the ellen page character and the dead wife, it was kinda ugh but I don't think it really held the movie back at all
