i understand your concern climbtree but i used tinyxp and minixp for a while. at first it seems really cool and you are like WOW PERFORMANCE but it really really is negligible. you have THREE FUCKING GIGABYTES of ram and you are worried because your os uses 200 megs? stop fiddling with a crippled OS man and just get normal XP! you will NOT experience any slowdown, dude. i have 2 gigs at home and at work, and my OS NEVER EVER gets in my way.

It takes a little longer to boot up (this is 99% because of services too, btw. There are lots of guides on the internet about how to disable a lot of unnecessary services and this will have the MOST dramatic increase in system performance. Just a little hint, thats basically what tiny xp is: disabled/deleted services, and NOTHING MORE! Disabling DHCP can knock 15-30 seconds off your boot time instantly.) than tinyxp, but how often do you boot your computer? this one has been going for over a week now. There is no reason to reboot your computer more than once a week TOPS. In fact the only reason i ever reboot is if someting requires me to (installing a program/updating OS).

Basically dude this is futile and if you are interested this much in getting good performance, stop messing with a crippled OS and get some linux distro because you will have 10x more fun and learn 100x more than just getting a stripped version of a bloated os.

Btw look into services man i am dead serious that that is all tinyxp really is. There are lots of things deleted which save you disk space, but do not increase PERFORMANCE at all. Only the disabling/deleting of services increases performance.
yes coulombs are "germaine", did you learn that word at talk like a dick school?

heh tinyxp is small yes.... but maybe you should try googling a little thing called Linux

be prepared to be blown the fuck away

Oh, don't worry. I use Linux alright :P

Ubuntu, in case you were wondering. Does EVERYTHING xp does, but better and quicker. Except I can't get Reason for it. D:< That really is the only reason i use windows.

i turn off my computer whenever i'm away from it for more than an hour, or overnight. i also turn off lights overnight and when i leave the room.

i think ideally i'd strip it myself but since i don't know what i'm doing this might not be ideal. i also already have a tinyxp cd here with me so i don't have to wait to download a new version or whatever or go to my parents house and get my cds.

i don't know i don't support this ethic that people have that now that computers can handle being bloated you should bloat everything.

Uh, why? It seems to be the distro with the most support, and I've had a LOT more luck with this one than the one I was using before. (Suse 10.0)

Which would you suggest, and why?

I like SuSE and believe it or not i actually like ubuntu. im not a HARDCORE LINUX GUY at all and have only really used a small handful of distros (the "most" hardcore i used was freebsd which made me feel very cool for a few days) (in fact i think linux fanboys are as bad as mac fanboys). my point was more that you shouldn't go around sayin g"heh.....i use linux. im a ubuntu guy."

but really i was being a dick so sorry jmickle just old dickhead gr over here! dont listen to me! the last ubuntu i used was 7 though.

i don't know i don't support this ethic that people have that now that computers can handle being bloated you should bloat everything.
i dont mean to be condescending at all and im not assuming you dont know anything about computers, but I think you are mixing up "bloat" with "diverse functionality". the reason OSes these days (yes even including xp) are "bloated" is not because they toss in random unnecessary shit (which they do) but because they do a LOT of stuff. they are constantly doing things in the background. i'm as much against unnecessary bloat as the next guy, fuck im a programmer!

but dude, i have a sql server running on my box, and always a visual studio open (right now i have 2 visual studios both running a project!!), outlook open, instant messenger open, i have an RDP session open, mirc, foobar, firefox with... 8 tabs open, a vpn client, SVN client, with a total 1400 megs used out of 2 gigs. 500 of that is firefox! another 450 of that is visual studio! tha tmeans EVERYTHING ELSE, INCLUDING THE OS, is using around 400 megabytes of ram. I wouldn't call that bloat, would you?

also, for the record, why have 3 gigs of ram if you never use more than 1/5 of it?

http://wubi-installer.org/

My friend was using this to install windows stuff on linux, he's had some other problems but I am not sure if that was user error or what not.

I also leave my system running constantly. It's actually more harmful to your system components to be turning them on and off, than leaving them on constantly.

does anyone have any  good links for power consumption when a system is in hibernate/sleep modes?

also climbtree to help save on power, you can have your hard drives turn off after X hours of inactivity (i set mine to 3 hours, i also have 5 hard drives so this helps with heat and power). Your monitors and hard drive will use more power than every other component in your computer combined. When you put your syste in standby, all components turn off and only enough power is used to keep the information in RAM alive. This is very little power btw. Turning on your computer causes wear on all components, most notably your hard drives!

i've never had a problem with functionality in tinyxp, apart from in rev09 starting up a network is weird, so i guess it's bloated for me. i was talking generally though and i didn't want to say SLACK PROGRAMMING but having such a definite hardware limit back in the day made programs a lot more efficient. i guess nowadays they're more complext and stuff anyway.

also i was originally going to get 4 gigs of ram, 2 2 gig sticks because they were only slightly more expensive than 1 gig sticks and i wanted to use the dual channel whatever, but someone said "4 gigs is a huge waste" so i got three instead which was a pretty goofy oversight on my behalf (you need matching sticks for dual channel or w/e)

it's mostly the feel of the system though! it's probably me just being a dick but it feels more responsive using less ram, and i guess all those background services use cpu time too so that could be it.

NEW POSTS:
yes i know, especially since i've got a cheap powersupply, but aside from power usage and ram leaks i can't sleep with my computer going and it's right next to my bed

also wouldn't having your harddrives turn off be the same as turning your computer off in terms of HD wear?

theoretically yes, however when you boot your computer all drives power up. if i dont access one of my drives for 3 days (which is basically what happens) then overall its still less strain than shutting down my entire computer. also im not sure if it actually turns them off or just "suspends" them.

also i find the computer white noise to be relaxing and i cant sleep WITHOUT my computer on.

I can relate to this. When I try to sleep with my system off, I get a ringing in my ears from the defening silence.

ahaha same here.

most of the time i actually put episodes of futurama/the office/south park/something else on low with the monitor off because it helps me go to sleep.

modern age, eh. gotta have noise to fall asleep.

your ears are meant to rest!!!!

anyway, reloaded the fullest install without the driver packs and it's quick again. not as quick as rev05 but that was a bare install and this has pretty much all the services save a few  :rite: :fingerwag: (i'm going to go about crippling them now)

GR are you kidding? Ubuntu is terrible but SuSE? SuSE is more bloated than XP it won't even fucking run on my system. SuSE is slow as hell.

EDIT: Oh and freebsd isn't linux.

With the A/C, Room Fan, Traffic, and trains going by, there's really rarely a quiet moment around here :\

yeah freebsd is just unix but like i said, i felt pretty cool using it for a couple days.

and i dont know what version of suse i had but it never seemed too bloated?? i hate kde so i dont like suse much NOW, but again im not really much of a linux guy anyway so i havent really invested a lot of time playing with different distros. the most ive ever used a linux distro was ubuntu 7, for like a month as my main OS at home.
