Hey you know what I think would be a really neat ability? Interpreting themes and characters in Greek and Roman art and literature. It would be pretty impressive to pick up a peice of pottery and say "hey, this one's Zeus. See that squiggle? Thunderbolt."

It would be impressive and useful, especially tommorow, when I have an exam on this and I'm horrible at it. Any tips?

Turn up for your exam completely shit-faced, having watched loads of films set in the wrong time period, but convince yourself it is the right time period. Probably best to do that to Gladiator and... hell, Pirates of the Carribean will do. You'll write a damn good essay... If they knew what the fuck you were writing about.

this was a third year paper and they expected you to have some background knowledge i guess because i actually read everything on the greeks at least and most of the stuff on the romans. like there wasn't even a LIST OF GODS AND THEIR SYMBOLS or HOW TO IDENTIFY HESTIA it was just really general stuff at best. probably wanted me to find my own stuff but why would i go to college if i wanted to do that!

i was secretly hoping someone would come in with some huge secret, but i couldn't tell a dude with a stick from hermes.

I did my third year Classical Studies paper on colonialism in the Archaic period and how the Greeks had a variety of colonial contacts, and how Greek customs shaped thier views of the cultures they came into contact with. The focus was mainly on the dichotomy and representations of Scythains and Thracians, but I also covered Egyptians, Celts, and Phoenicians.

Btw Hermes is usually depicted wearing a wide-brimmed traveller's hat, and has wings on his ankles. His fancy stick is called a caduceus.

I know its too late now but sometimes if you have a picture test, you'll get lucky and the potter/artist will have written the guy's name on the vase.
