Holy shit I can't even describe my joy at these news.

"Humans are lone animals living in society."

that's pretty neat but I think you're exaggerating both the effects of a single isolated case and the world's reaction (it's not on any news front pages for something that is making the "world go fuckin nuts")

Well, it wasn't just luck. But the cure isn't useful.

they'll need to do a few more years of research before this turns out to be useful. i do have very high hopes for this, though!

They cured it with a bone marrow transplant from someone who had a mutation that makes the cells targeted by HIV invincible to HIV and since it involves a bone marrow transplant I don't really have any hopes for it. Then they're trying to insert that mutation into normal people with a custom made virus but then HIV could just evolve and start ignoring that mutation

If by "ignoring the mutation" you mean "evolve and bypass" then, yes. HIV would have to mutate itself to find a different method of entering white blood cells that involves binding to a different receptor, for example.

Man, call me when the world really does go nuts over this.  These things tend to be amazingly disappointing.  We've yet to see whether this cure actually works on a large amount of people; without nasty side effects, that is.

The only way to cure AIDS is to find the assholes who invented it.  If they have the data on how they made it, they should also have the answer of how to cure it.

It may not be a perminant solution yet. But now that they know of this mutation, all they gotta do is figure out a way to manufacture it. So, it IS a big deal.

There's one side effect: it causes you to die and your corpse is reanimated as a brainless beast with a taste for human flesh.

The marrow transplant, of course, was from Steel -- the Chuck Norris of the medical world.
"I would be totally embarassed to write this, even as a fakepost. it's not funny except in how you seem to think it's good. look at all the redundancies, for fuck's sake. "insipid semantics, despicable mediocrity" ugh gross gross. I want to take a shower every time I read your prose." -Steel

Juris, from my years of medical expertise(days of obsessing over House MD), I'd say that a cancer patient that has been through three rounds of chemotherapy cannot donate bone marrow just like that, judging from the date of the article, Steel's immune system would still be too weak NOT to get an infection while extracting the bone marrow. BEATING CANCER AND AIDS IS LIKE TRYING TO HACK THE PLAYSTATION 3
