The classic NES games, I mean.

I hate them. I don't understand what's so great about them! I think they're just too hard. Even for their time, I think the MegaMan games were incredibly simple. Don't get me wrong, the level design is pretty interesting and the graphics have a certain appealing style, but I have my complaints.

The physics of MegaMan just make me wanna vomit. Mind you I've only been able to play MegaMan emulated on my Xbox and on my PC, but still. Jumping feels so unnatural and uncontrolable. MegaMan jumps like a wimp. He can jump pretty high, but not nearly enough in front of him! I don't like his weapon, either. Going around shooting balls out of my arm isn't cool! I want assault rifles and machine guns. A choice of different primary weapons would be kind of nice, like Contra style weapon pickups for instance. Okay, maybe MegaMan DOES have these, but I just haven't gotten that far. I don't know.

And why the hell can't I duck?! The lack of a simple feature such as ducking makes me hate this game a whole lot. With all these enemies shooting shit right at my face, I'd like to be able to duck under projectiles instead of having to jump 10 feel over them, and usually right into spikes or some flying bastard above me! I do like the fact that I at least get a pretty good sized health bar, but most of the time I'm panicing and praying that bad guys will shit out more health for me when I kill them since I suck at MegaMan so much. The music. I also like the music.

That being said... why should I like MegaMan? What's the big deal?

You don't have to like Megaman, you just have to know about it.

Anyways sounds to me you don't like the style of older Megaman games and likewise platformers without big guns. (By the way those balls are supposed to be laser blasts.)
A tool is a tool regardless. I mean if you suck, you suck, and not even the most perfect tool could save you. And if your damn good then even with the worst tool ever conceived you could chug out some high quality shit.

I only beat the very first Megaman, as far as the NES games go, anyhow. I thought it was a pretty cool game, but I prefer the ones on the SNES more.

I'm not a fan, really. I like the character and the world and the stupid way all the robots have Man at the end except in MM9. However, I'm terrible at them, and in every Megaman and Megaman X game I've played, there is usually only one level I can beat.
I am a fan of the MM Battle Network series though. That's some fun times.

Mega man 2 was the only one I really beat, though I also got pretty far in 3.
In general most of them aren't good enough for me to sit down and play through them, but tbh I can't do that with very many games anymore. Sometimes I invite a friend or 2 over to go through mega man and other tricky games. It is fun to struggle together through challenging games :]

You sound like a little bitch imo, most of the NES megaman games are hardcore.

Megaman is a robot made out of v. strong metal! It's hard for him to jump like mario does fyi

This is a valid point! Also, you need Rush to get to high places. Megaman isn't Astro, sheesh!

Clearly you haven't played games for their time at their time. Ever play Burger Time? Silver Surfer? Karate Kid? Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles? Battletoads? I could go on. There are crazy freaking games from back then. Megaman is barely one of them. If I had the patience I could learn the spawn points of each enemy in the level, because once I know this the game is pretty easy imo.

Why don't you play Halo then? Assault rifles? Are you kidding me?

I don't like Megaman at all either. Like dude said, I like the ideas and universe and plot bla bla bla, but the game itself is very boring.

I did like that one where it was 2 players and you could be any combination of MM protoman or bass! Not really a great game, but the 2 player aspect made it fun!

Also the games that are pseudo-online are cool. But then again that's not even legitimate megaman, other than by name and color.

I think the Mega Man games rock, especially those on NES.  Like all NES games, they were very difficult and unforgiving.  The series stayed difficult on later consoles, too, even as (arguably) the average difficulty level went down.  I didn't think the SNES games were very compelling (X-2 is my favorite here) but the GBA ones made things interesting again, even though they also made it clear that the type of gameplay of the NES era was dead and wouldn't come back.

I found air man's stage to be really easy. Dust Man's stage on Rockman World 3 for Game Boy however takes the cake for the hardest, most rage inducing Mega Man stage ever made... And despite its diabolical design, it's totally awesome

And here's some superpro owning the fuck outta the stage in a speed run

I used to be a mega fan (pun intended) on the NES then fell out once the series hit the SNES because Capcom decided to keep the screen size the same but triple the size of Mega Man (I think Steel called him a PARADE BALLOON in one topic which is a 100% accurate statement).

Then MM9 came out which rekindled my love of the series.  Mega Man 1 does have wonky physics because MM SLIDES 1 pixel when you land from a jump and a lot of platforms (especially the moving ones in Iceman's stage) require pixel perfect jumping.  I don't mind the lack of ducking but I hate hate hate the INSTA-REGEN where if you move the screen by a single pixel all enemies on the other side instantly regenerate.  It made a lot of areas, especially Sigma's stage in MMX1 where you had to wall jump past all of these bots, ridiculously difficult.

But yeah your balls just aren't tough enough to handle MM.  Try playing easy mode games like Mario or something, wimp.  I beat Ghosts n Goblins both ways on one quarter so don't talk to me about hard!

There's basically no plot to megaman... Choose a boss you want to kill, kill him and get his powers, repeat a few times, then defeat the evil mad scientist who lives in a skull-shaped factory and makes the bad robots.

Yeah compaired to harder games like Ghost and Goblins (orignal) the Megaman games were cake walk, the only difficult MM games I can see some people bitch about is mostly 1 and 2. 1 for two reasons, the instant kill spikes even if you're flickering BS, but adds to the challenge, and Ice Man's level.

Megaman 2, that 4th boss in Dr. Wily's castle, always pissed me off! That's pretty much it. :S The rest were pretty easy, (with some exception to MM4, but no where as difficult as 1 or 2.)

A lot of people think this is a bug for some reason.  He slides a little bit when you stop running (or when you land, continue running for as much as one frame, and then stop).  It doesn't happen when you land from a jump without holding down left or right because there's no reason for him to slide if he only has vertical momentum.  In fact, I can show you the assembly code that does it if you're interested.

fuck all that computer shit let me break it down dogg: megaman is v. heavy and it's unreasonable to expect him to be able to come to a complete stop-landing like some kind of Chinese gymnast after launching himself over a cliff.

fuck all that computer shit
http://bisqwit.iki.fi/jutut/megamansource/maincode.txt

Decompile your ROM, open it in an editor and find the following lines in bank 5 (they won't be commented like in the text file):
$95E8: A9 0C:   LDA #$0C
$95EA: 8D 0004: STA $400+0
$95ED: A9 01:   LDA #$01
$95EF: 8D 4004: STA $440+0
Change $95ED into
$95ED: A9 01:   LDA #$00
and recompile it to remove the slide entirely.

The thing is, MM has precise control over movement in air while jumping so in order to reach a far away platform you have to hold down left or right and then INSTANTLY let go the very second he touches the ground or else he'll slide.  This killed me on so many levels especially Wily's stage where you have those laser shooting moving platforms and there are spikes all over the place.

Also, Yellow Devil FUCK U (this was before i learned about the select/elecman trick).

Also also also Gutsman's stage with the dropping platforms.  You have to jump perfectly here because MM falls the instant the platform touches the gap and the platforms move so slow that if you jump even a second too early you'll fall.

It's strange, I beat these games so easily as a wide eyed boy of 8 years but now as a grown ass man I can barely stand them.  I should do a study in how vidya skill degrades with time.

I was going to say I didn't like Mega Man and then I realized I really like Mega Man II for the gameboy (I think the NES version is exactly the same but in color, is this right?).  I never got far in it at all though, but I still liked it.  I don't like any of the other Mega Man games though, but I'm not anti-Mega Man either.
