I think the MM for the gameboy is Mega Man IV.

I have the ULTRA SUPER RARE MM for the gamegear (cost me 200$ and an arm) which is a combination of MMIV and V or something.

I also have three copies of the MM9 promo pack, all sealed.  I'm going to wait a year or until the next MM game comes out and sell them for a fucking mint.

Some people derive satisfaction from overcomng a difficult challenge.  That's the "big deal" with MegaMan games.  Plus, he can slide in Megaman 3 (which I thought was a kickass gameplay element and was disappointed to find that it wasn't in MM9).   Energy Blaster > Assault Rifle.

*controls a robot that can jump several times its own height and has an energy cannon affixed to both arms so powerful that it can shred most metals with a few shots*

*complains about not jumping high enough and not using a shitty assault rifle*

I don't hate the Mega Man series, but I never got into the NES titles because of their brutal difficulty. I still like the X series and Rockman & Forte for the SNES, I just don't have the patience to play through the older titles because I have shit for patience these days... though as a kid, I probably would have GLEEFULLY played through them and mastered each one.

But Rockman & Forte has some of the best music I've heard in a MM game, that's one of the main reasons I liked it so much besides the new graphical style and the option to play as Forte. The stages were also really good looking compared to the X series and it really pushed the SNES as one of the last titles to come out for the console.

My first real Megaman game was Megaman Xtreme 2 for the GBC. And I played the crap out of it. Then I picked up the Megaman Collection for gamecube and played the crap out of Megaman X4-X6 (I already beat X-X3 a lot on emu).

Also I you can duck in X5.

That's saying something since most NES games are pretty hard. I don't think you're giving yourself enough credit?

Some of the hardest games I played through as a very young lad took me forever to beat (like Zen, fuuuuck that game it's hard), but I still had a better chance then because I was able to devote a ridiculous amount of time to any game and never really got mad over BS like I would now. I tried playing Zen recently and it kicked my ass, so I doubt I'd do any better with Mega Man.

Skip to 3:30 to see how nasty this game is, I don't know how I ever beat it (considering I was about 6 at the time).

Then some arn't just hard but extremely annoying (Duck Hunt anyone...).

If it wasn't for the music I may never have gotten through even half the game, it served as somewhat as a motivator for me.
A tool is a tool regardless. I mean if you suck, you suck, and not even the most perfect tool could save you. And if your damn good then even with the worst tool ever conceived you could chug out some high quality shit.

I seem to remember the games themselves were fun but really the SNES ones had a lot missing gameplay-wise when it could've been epic on SNES, and I didn't like those as much even though I wanted to

but yeah like someone said the series in general had no plot and it was classic back when I was a little kid and it kind of felt like a game plot that was about as sophisticated as something I could write but the fact that they're still doing them the same exact way kind of depresses me, like the developers are making an 80's kids show except the 80's never ended for them

I also significantly liked the character designs better on the NES when they were cute and had little dots for eyes the SNES ones felt too EXTREEME like at least it had an ironic effect that the robots were all called MAN but ones like ice man looked like little baby eskimos and stuff

mega man games are excellent but if you did not grow up playing the classic games as a kid and instead you grew up with SOCOM and Halo and stupid shit then yeah it's probably kinda hard to see why they're so good. it's a lot like people who complain about classic films. CASABLANCA SUCKS WHAT IS THIS BLACK AND WHITE SHIT I WANT MY COLORS AND CGI AND MICHAEL BAY!!
well no not entirely because the problem i and a lot of other people have with classic nes games like that isn't the lack of eye candy; i couldn't give a shit about that.  it is how insanely hard and frustrating and cheap and repetitive they are.  you could shine it up and put it in a new box and i'd still hate it and not really understand the appeal of KJKJK FUCK I DIED TIME TO START OVER KJFDLKJFK THIS IS SO HARD (see: modern Ninja Gaiden games).

except he's also complaining about physics engines and assault rifles, not difficulty so much.

that and I still think the megaman series is on the lower end of difficulty. I'm a dude who hates playing games over and over until you've memorized the map and you convince yourself THATS WHAT FUN IS and I enjoyed megaman a lot.

Everyone is bringing up how hard Megaman games are but really, on the NES standards they are a joke on difficulty when you compare them to series like Ghost n Goblins or Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania.

You had checkpoints, energy tanks, an arsenal of weapons and gadgets to get you through the day and you could choose what stages you wanted to complete first. It's pretty player friendly.

I'm kinda surprised so many people are had a hard time with Megaman because I just kinda breezed through all of em with just the buster because it was too tedious to swap weapons all the time without instant-swap via shoulder buttons.

EDIT:
Also Battletoads for NES, if you want a hard game throw Megaman out the window because it doesn't qualify and try beat Battletoads,  or if you are the average gamer you won't get past the 3rd stage and there's like 20 stages in the game.

Shinobi 2 on the Game Gear. Most frustrating game I've probably ever played.

Halo and stupid shit
Oh no you didn't. The Halo series is pretty good, although the campaign modes are fairly boring. The multiplayer is what's good, unless you meant campaign mode exclusively.

Megaman games really aren't that difficult though! I mean they can be kinda hard especially in the Wily castle stages but I would hardly consider them INSANELY DIFFICULT. Shit like Contra or whatever where there are literally five million bullets on screen at any given time and getting hit just once will instantly kill you is insanely difficult. In Megaman you actually have a life bar and recharge pickups and energy tanks and infinite continues and passwords acting as pseudo saves so you don't have to constantly start the game over.

Also while you argue that old NES games are too hard I would say that the problem is actually that new games are just too easy and maybe you're just too accustomed to them. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that I seriously cannot remember ever seeing a gameover screen since I was like idk 12. Do modern games even have gameovers or do you just infinitely respawn and continue along with your autorecharging health bar?
yeah youre probably right.  i mean i don't think i'm too accustomed to easy games because we are the exact same age and i grew up on nes/snes just like you did, but i think it is more that i just suck at videogames and find newer easier games JUUUUUST RIIIIIIGHT.

I dunno, I dont like the NES Megaman, and I LOOOVEEED the SNES Megaman.

But to put it into perspective, I didn't like any NES game. They all felt like I was playing PONG rather than anything other
